Thrustmaster HOTAS F-18

Recommended Posts

If I can get just the > Grip < for $150.00 I will be ecstatic. That was the idea of how this supposed to work going back to the Cougar...

Someone post that buy Warthog grip only from Thrustmaster for about 120$ - no reason for his add-on grip with less buttons and HATS cost more, despite all "hype F-18".

This "add-on grip for Warthog" is a wise move from Tm, make their RD cost low and can be used in 3rd part bases (Baur, VKB, VirPil).

What's the point of buying this stick if it has fewer buttons and hats than its predecessor?

because I want a Hornet Grip that will also work with F-15s and AV-8Bs :music_whistling:

I wonder if they will take advantage of the fact the grips are so similar and market them as such...

as it looks like, the A10/F16 grip is a superset of the F18 grip. I dont see any good reason to buy one. The throttle however is interesting and is pretty different. IMHO it was more important to get the throttle than the grip, but I guess for marketing reasons, the grip is more of an eye catcher. It is harder to market a throttle alone.

Is there a also throttle? They only showed the grip or did I pass something?

I see a possible problem in that the button will be assigned according to the base as thats what dcs recognizes so if you are gonna swap between A10c stick and F18c stick on the same base then you may have a button assignment problem. At the moment the Virpil Mongoose on the TM base is recognized as the TM Warthog. The base is recognized not the stick top.

It's really a shame. As TM still hasn't officially revealed it's hornet stick, there is may a small chance for a hornet throttle (the stick has just been showed in a box, nobody could touch it)

We are happy to announce the cooperation between Eagle Dynamics SA and Thrustmaster® to create the ultimate F/A-18C Hornet simulation experience”. “After the success of our first collaboration with Eagle Dynamic SA on DCS: A-10C Warthog, that lead to the HOTAS Warthog, we are proud to start a new collaboration on the DCS: F/A-18C Hornet".

I am inclined to believe a new grip isn't Thrustmaster's idea of creating:

" the ultimate F/A-18C Hornet simulation experience.

At least I hope not...

That functionality has to be done on the Thrustmaster end. They will have to update the firmware of the stick to change the id depending on the grip. Otherwise even Target will not work correctly.

Seems like a non-issue to me. I'm sure the devs didn't just begin to consider the implementation of interchangeable handles... :music_whistling:

By the looks of things the Hornet grip is missing only a 4-way hat compared to the Warthog.

And depending on what the little scroll wheel (??) is under the the two upper hats, it might not be missing much at all.

So why change any code what so ever? Surely the prudent choice is make the new grip a 1:1 map to the existing grip, and allow Target to program a non-existent button that you know will never be pressed.

Or better yet, why not? I don't see how the option to handle it as if it were a 3rd party hacked add-on rather than their own product is the more prudent choice.

IMHO, it would make perfect sense that the Warthog base with the Hornet grip gets recognized as e.g. a TM Hornet stick. I presume the base firmware would need an upgrade for that to happen, though (unless they've added some additional grip names and ID's from the beginning).

The one midway up was a 3 way in the 90's but may of changed since then.

Supposedly this is the final proof stick before the production run. My buddy that was holding it said it feels great and pure quality. Word on the street is this will be a Christmas time buy.

I will consider it, assuming that I can buy the grip without a base.

I'm torn... All I really fly is the F-18, but it looks like that has at least 2 fewer buttons than the warthog stick... possibly 3 if the "thumb weapon select" hat is not 4+1 and only a 4.

Who use this Tm F-18 grip in latest E3 say that have same number of buttons than Warthog grip (19+POV HAT) due use of 5 way (buttons) in all 3 HAT's plus the small 'slider' bellow left HAT, with 2 buttons.

I will buy this for the added realism. I just really don’t understand why the prototype has been at two E3 conventions and still isn’t available. It is a grip going for an existing base. Are we that small of a customer base compared to those buying expensive steering wheels, shifters and pedals for racing sims?
