Use of throttle?

Just a quickie..... I'm more of a fix-wing sort of fellow and don't really know that much about helicopter flight. I'm just sort of fudging it as I go along. Just wondering if the throttle plays an active role during flight or is it just a case of cranking it up to full power and then controlling everything via the cyclic, which is what I am doing at present? Naturally I'm using the rudder pedals too, lol.

I expect if the governor is damaged you would need to control it manually, but not sure if that damage is modeled, haven't had a failure yet.
