Syrian opposition cooperated with Syrian government to push ISIS away from Kweires Airbase near Aleppo

Syrian government forces received intelligence on terrorist positions around the besieged Kweires airbase from opposition sources, which helped them lift the two-year blockade, the Russian Defense Ministry has revealed.

This airfield had been surrounded by ISIS [the former name of the Islamic State terrorist group] for two years,” Major General Igor Konashenkov, spokesman for the Russian defense ministry, said in a daily briefing. “Intelligence on the locations of the terrorist fire positions and support points around Kweires was provided by the Syrian opposition and cleared by the communication center in Baghdad.

The opposition also provided data to help target a big weapons depot of the Nusra Front, the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda, near the village Mheen in the Homs province, Konashenkov revealed.

Now that's a surprise :)

Russian long-range aviation conducting attacks against ISIS positions

Russia has deployed its fleet of strategic bombers to double the volume of airstrikes on Islamist targets in Syria, Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has announced. Vladimir Putin has ordered a cruiser to coordinate operations with French naval forces in the Mediterranean.

“We are conducting a mass airstrike campaign against Islamic State targets in Syria. We have now doubled the number of sorties, which is allowing us to conduct operations throughout the length and breadth of the country,” Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said during a Security Council meeting in Moscow chaired by the Russian president.

Shoigu said that Russia’s Tu-95, Tu-22 and Tu-160 strategic bombers have been brought into the operation, while the Air Force command added that the strike group has been bolstered with 37 new planes, including Su-34 bombers and Su-27 fighter jets.

SALINAS PEAK, N.M. - U.S. Air Force authorities said Wednesday an F-16 fighter jet crashed while on a training mission in southern New Mexico, but the pilot safely ejected.

The Fighting Falcon went down about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday in rugged terrain near Salinas Peak, the highest point of the San Andres Mountains and some 45 miles northwest of Holloman Air Force Base, near Alamogordo. Officials from Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Ariz., said emergency response teams found the pilot in good condition.

That truly is amazing!

But I guess it's a matter of definition whether they're the first to do it:

To date, SpaceX failed to land its Falcon rocket after sending the payload to orbit (well... one of them landed, but then tumbled and exploded, so I guess we shouldn't call it a landing after all :D), but they did achieve test flights and subsequent landings at least two years ago.

Well, McDonnel Douglas beat them to it in 1995:

From what I know, the technology for this type of landings already exists. The rocket climbs straight up without trying to achieve orbit (not orbit height) and then comes down again slowly. You need considerable less energy to go straight up and down.

What SpaceX is trying to do is actually bring down the first stage from an orbital flight path, which takes much more energy to do and is more complex.

Israel defense minister says Russian plane breached airspace - The Washington Post

JERUSALEM — Israel’s defense minister says a Russian plane recently penetrated Israeli airspace but was not shot down thanks to open communications between the two countries.

Moshe Yaalon said Sunday the jet entered about a mile (1.5 kilometers) into Israeli airspace by “mistake” and immediately turned around back to Syria when the Russians were notified. For two months, Russia has been carrying out airstrikes to support Syrian President Bashar Assad.

He said Israel recently opened a channel for coordination with Russia “to prevent misunderstandings.” He told Israel Radio that “Russian planes don’t intend to attack us and therefore there is no need to automatically, even if there is some kind of mistake, to shoot them down.”

Russian Su-34 in Syria to start conducting flights carrying a pair each of R-73 and R-27R missiles for self-escort.

"The Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers today have for the first time taken on combat mission not only the OFAB-500 air bombs and KAB-500 guided bombs, but also short-and medium-range air-to-air missiles. The planes are equipped with missiles for their defence," [RuAF spokesman Colonel Igor] Klimov said.

Turkey deploys armoured regiment comprised of tanks and artillery to Mosul region in Iraq, details unclear

Turkish press
(
)

Turkey will have a permanent military base in the Bashiqa region of Mosul as the Turkish forces in the region training the Peshmerga forces have been reinforced, Hürriyet reported.

The deal regarding the base was signed between Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) President Massoud Barzani and Turkish Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioğlu, during the latter’s visit to northern Iraq on Nov. 4.

British press
(
)

“The Iraqi authorities call on Turkey to ... immediately withdraw from Iraqi territory,” the statement said.

“We have confirmation that Turkish forces, numbering about one armoured regiment with a number of tanks and artillery, entered Iraqi territory ...
, without a request or authorisation from Iraqi federal authorities,” it said.

The deployment “is considered a serious violation of Iraqi sovereignty”, it added.

Everyone, please refrain from discussions and speculative articles on the matter.

Also, I think it went unreported here though most people know about it, that both the UK and Germany have committed military assets to the US-led coalition in Syria.

Germany's parliament has voted to send military support to the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria.

MPs approved the plan for a German non-combat role by 445 votes to 146.

Tornado reconnaissance jets, a naval frigate and 1,200 soldiers will be sent to the region.

RAF jets have carried out their second set of air strikes in Syria since MPs backed military action against so-called Islamic State in the country.

The Omar oil fields were targeted for the second time, using two Tornados and, for the first time, two Typhoons.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon, who is visiting the British base for the Syria mission in Cyprus, said: "Last night saw the full force of the RAF."

Four Tornado jets launched the first UK air strikes in Syria on Thursday.

Bombing began hours after MPs gave their backing for military action, with the oil fields, which are in eastern Syria, targeted.

Aviation assets directly involved include the RAF Tornado GR.4 and Typhoons, plus German Tornado ECRs.

Regarding German commitment: I wonder if all Tornados will have datalink Recce pods,as there are only two of them in trial and just ready for deployment in summer. Rest is due to till 2018.

But nevertheless, on journalist question why German Tornados will carry A2A missiles whereas ISIS has noaircraft, the answer was: Because!

[ame]

[/ame]

It's only a show of support to France. German Luftwaffe isn't really capable of doing such a mission.

British Tornados flew combat sorties very shortly after their parliament had agreed to such a mission.

They already laugh about German Luftwaffe, doubting that there will be any target left for reconnaissance when the German Luftwaffe has collected spare parts for their few mission ready aircraft.

Until summer it was standard, that German Luftwaffe recce pods were equipped with wet film that had to be developed after the planes returned from their sortie:
