DCS World 2.0 and New Maps Discussion Thread

EDGE is the rendering engine Nevada is built upon, it allows the use of several DX11 (I think) features to improve the rendering performance. To take advantage of these features the terrain is built with to a design that uses things like clipmaps etc.

In order for the Black Sea terrain to utilise these features it would have to be completely built again from scratch - this is not going to happen any time soon, if at all. I'll say never.

Nate

Fair enough, I get that, I just will be interested to see how both worlds live together in one little package, or if the Black Sea map will eventually become unusable...

I thought EDGE was a replacement for the current Graphics Engine, so either the game will use 2 different graphics engines depending on content loaded or I really dont understand what EDGE is lol...

It is also possible that EDGE will be backwards compatible, but that the old content will just not utilize the new features. All just speculation, though.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

That would make more sense to me, but if the map would have to be restarted from scratch to utilize EDGE then it seems that that wouldnt be the case. Otherwise you would think the map could just be updated (and by saying "just be updated" I in no means am downplaying the amount of possible work that "just be updated" could take so dont bite my head off :) )

But then I am trying to assemble a puzzle with 50% of the pieces missing :)

presumably the original map spec is a sub-set of EDGE....or rather EDGE is an evolution of the original map spec.

...think of it like how your fav FPS game can render using DX9 or DX11....

or in another way, think of every "feature" that the original map supported that needs a data structure to support it also exists in EDGE, but there is also new additional data available that can be used by a more modern renderer to generate better visuals.

You can infer from this that Nevada could be available to be drawn "old style" I'd say.

of course, they could just have 2 completely non co-incidental engines...but I doubt it

No - AFAIK the black sea region would have to be started from scratch in EDGE as the current terrain is not compatible - and no it is not just a question of importing 3d models, lots more goes on under the hood besides that.

Nate would it possible for someone on the ED team to give us a glimpse into what is involved in generating the maps? I think it would be interesting and it might give people a better understanding why these things take some time.

Patience. Yes it's been in development for a while, yes there have been some halts on progress for a little bit, but development is back on track and as things progress you'll know with the official updates by Wags.

IF you happen to have a copy of the ancient, prehistoric A-10C beta 1 or 2 (almost nobody does anymore), that beta Nevada terrain

. It's incomplete yes, but it's something to buzz around in while you wait for the EDGE version. :)

No, because the only way to get it was to pre-order A-10C, you can't distribute it as a free mod.

Cool video!

So if you were in on the A-10C preorder and have the Beta2 update how do you get the Nevada terrain to work with DCS World?

I'm not in front of the PC right now, so bear with me...

Look in the main directory of your BETA 2 install for a folder called "theaters of war"

There should be a subfolder inside called "Nevada"

A simple copy paste job of the nevada folder into the theaters of war folder in whatever version you're running and should do it.

...remember, to load up Nevada you have to open the mission editor and create a new mission. That's when you get the option to chose your theater.

Works wonderfully in DCS world atm

That seems easy enough, but having to use the mission editor would be something I would not have thought of, been quite awhile since I used Beta2.

I will give it a try after I get DCS World d'loaded & installed, only three more D'loads to go .

Thanks for the info.

I know that what I am talking about! I was preorder/beta tester but I just killed all my old backups...maybe someone hasn't.

..oh I hear you it would not be legal to let people have it that were not in the beta.
