DCS World 2.0 and New Maps Discussion Thread

And as a general reminder, the beta Nevada is not the same as this Nevada. The only real thing they have in common is that the subject matter is Nevada. ;)

Been looking at Wag's pictures / screenshots and it's definitely a 1000% better than the original. The original didn't have the craggy mountains etc it looked almost painted. The "Strip" was ok-ish so let's hope that made it into the New Nevada.

What I'd like to know is as Red Flag etc is set there will ALL Eastern Bloc / RU unit's fly there or will it be limited to certain countries ? I know India has been there recently so will we get some new countries?

will it be limited to certain countries ?

Where would be the sense in that? Such restrictions are best done by the mission designer to fit his scenario. I don't think thet ED would superimpose any restrictions of this kind.

Never know how everyone's brain work's, so I thought being as it is based in Nevada, USA some limitations may have been put in, personally I think it would be good for all countries and maybe a few newer countries to be added. I was not sure about limitations on visiting countries as to being able to participate in the actual Red Flag so that's why I asked ....

Well, Red Flag specifically does have the habit of not being a US exercise, but rather a US + half the world exercise, including many non-NATO countries.

Yes, but then red flag is not the only possible scenario (unrealistic or not, doesn't matter), so i don't see ED denying anything of that.

I'm kinda curious why the secrecy? Would it be so bad to say "We are shooting for a Jan '12 release and current development shows we are on track to make that date (everything's subject to change)."?

I'm not chomping at the bit or anything...just wondering.

Because when a date is mentioned, many call it a promise regardless of what else is said. It works like this:

Some core fans who read these forums know how it works.

Most people hear of this date from mags, blogs, other forums, publications etc which can typically 'forget' to mention the 'no promises' part, and when the 'promised' module doesn't show up on time, bashing ensues.

Appreciate the response GGTharos. ED seems to prefer playing things closer to the chest and I was unaware of their reasons. I was thinking from different perspective (i.e. user) so one could prep by saving money to buy hardware/software.

"It'll be ready when it's ready" is fine enough by me.

Well this interview that I found on Gamespy: Eagle Dynamics Developer Q&A (Didn't see it posted here elsewhere)

GameSpy:
The Nevada map for DCS A10 was scheduled for a 2011 release – are you still on track to deliver? Will this map arrive with any missions or campaigns to make use of it?

Jim:
The Nevada map schedule has slipped, due to a compete rebuild and new technical features that are being developed. I think Spring 2012 is achievable. There will be missions and a campaign if we have time. Certainly campaigns will appear at a later stage. It is after all the area of Red Flag Exercises!

So it had a little more information that I wasn't aware of. And I think he's probably safe with saying Spring 2012 is "achievable". So if it slips past spring '12 and if everyone is stomping their feet and smashing their fists, ED can simply state that it was achievable, not definite.

If it were me, I'd not let slip one word until it was in the can, then announce, then release at my leisure. Total blackout. any leakers would be shot on sight. OPSEC is key.

The community was in an uproar when they did that with Black Shark 2. ED just can't win either way. :joystick:

I reckon thats because they called it a patch for months beforehand, and then decided to call it an "upgrade" the moment BS2 went live. At least with the Nevada terrain the price or lack there of (yay for pre-orders) is known and a rough time estimate is given.

Honestly it all kinda reminds me of Valve in recent years. "Oh you want the 3rd installment to a loved franchise? Well to bad, you're gonna get a bunch of other projects first." I guess the only difference between em is that EDs stuff will actually tie in together in a more meaningful way than hats.

The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world.

What is EDGE going to bring us? Is it just that the digital terrain model will have more points than the current map and thus considerably nicer - smoother terrain, or is a bigger deal than that?

Have a look through the screenshots that have been released and see if you can work it out.

Well, there was this quote about it:

Hasn't really been much else said that I'm seeing about it.
