Can new buildings be added into the sim/editor?

Hi all,

 

I was thinking about the issue of AI transparent trees and it struck me that if you could add a new "building", but change the graphic to look like a tree or clump of trees, we might have a work-around.

 

If new buildings/objects can be added into the game, then I am up to start trying to see if I can make something work graphically.

It can be done in the Mission Editor, but nobody is going to bother because every building and/or tree you add to the list is allocated a side, red or blue. Once you insert that tree onto the map you make that airfield red or blue and the opposition cannot land at it, the aircraft divert to the nearest airfield of their own colour. Which is why nobody will create anything for LFC2 either, same problem.

Thanks for the reply. Those pics look great.

 

I am not sure I understand you comment about sides. I mean I get that the building, tree, etc. would be assigned a side.

 

But what difference would it make what side a tree was "on". It is an inert object. If I made a ring of buildings aka trees and they were side "x" and I was flying on side "y" and I landed in the opening between them (or just hovered for cover) what difference would it make? I would still have LOS blocked by all units on the other side of the building wall, correct?

I want to do it because I'm trying to get my scenery I created back on to the airfield my team flies at. However, the method I used in 1.12 does not seem to work (I just get popup errors that prevent me from selecting structures in the static objects list)

Didn't explain that very well. Ages ago a guy called Birdy 666 created a tree and static objects mod for Lomac, he added a few tree lines, groups and shapes of woods, and a whole new heap of static objects that had not been selectable in the Mission Editor before. These were objects that were already in the Bazar/Terrain/Structures/High folder. All he did was create a way to make more of them selectable, and a brilliant mod it was too. Complicated to do, but brilliant. In Lomac you can select Russia and place objects anywhere, in or near airfields, makes no difference. And you can land US Aircraft on that airbase with the red objects in place, as it should be really, they are just trees or buildings.

 

When Black Shark came out I modified his mod to fit into Black Shark, added lost of new eye candy to the airfields, towns etc. My intention was to get the air bases as close to looking like they do (or did) look in real life, buildings in the right places etc. It was a huge amount of work, but they looked great. Then came the disappointment.

 

In the Mission Builder you add a new static object, be it a tree or a building, by selecting a red or blue side Structure and simply sticking it where you want it, it takes ages to get the orientation right because you have to keep running the game in flight mode to see the object correctly. Then I tried to use that airbase, only to find that if there were any of my new red structure objects anywhere near it no blue AI aircraft would land, they get to approach and divert to the next blue only airbase. So you end up creating a number of bases that might be red and a number that might be blue, whatever you might fancy, and that takes FOREVER.

 

You can add trees anywhere, and you can land amongst them if you want, but no AI aircraft will go near them if they are on opposite sides.

 

I have tried everything I know to overcome this, in the end I had to give up, it was driving me nuts ...

 

The solution as I see it is for ED to make these inanimate object inanimate, it's not as if a red tree is going to attack a blue tree or a red farm building is going to attack a blue aircraft hangar, but that is not going to happen so we are stuck with it as it is. I think it may have something to do with the scoring element of the game, building score points.

 

I guess that is why nobody is making any structure mods for BS, and nor will they for LFC2. If you want eye candy you might as well stick to Lomac.

Thanks for the extended explanation. Well, that is a disappointment.

 

For me, the lack of being able to use trees for cover in a helocopter sim is a real blow. I mean, if you look at some of the military tactical manuals for helo use, they all seem to indicate using trees for cover.

 

Is there a way to get rid of all of the trees? If all that can be used for cover is buildings and the ground, then anyting that clutters up the topography and keeps me from seeing what I can make effective use of is, in my opinion, a detriment to employing the helo on the battlefield.

 

I know that this is, as has been pointed out, a flight-sim first (although I would point out for the sake of arguement that the series is named Digital COMBAT Simulation). And I am having a blast learning to squeeze the most out of the helo and I willingly support ED and their products because I believe in voting with your money and quality flight combat sims are few and far between. But once I get to a certain level of mastery with the helo, I am going to expect the hard won skill to reap dividends on the battlefield.

 

If I get blown out of the sky because I could not see some potential covering terrain because of the trees (which are of no use is this regard), that will be frustrating.

 

But this can be combated by not attempting to engage targets in large, flat and effectively coverless terrain except from long distances.

 

Please keep in mind that I am saying this without having tried a "hot" mission or campaign yet. I'm still taming the beast, as it were. I am just trying to understand and anticipate what kinds of tactics will will be able to employ.

 

Anyway, thanks for the information and I will be hoping that ED can find a way to justify addressing this that fits with their development plans in the future.

crazyeddie could you briefly explain the process you went through to make them selectable in the mission editor? I was able to do it in FC1.12, but the same process does not seem to work in the new engine. I have all of the textures and models in the correct places, but simply adding lines in the structures/technicstable.sht and the db_units_ground.lua does not seem to do the trick. Have I missed a step, or is there something special I have to do with these files?

Did you insert the extra lines in the db_countries file as well, the same stuff under each country, it has to be there to be selectable.

 

Still trying to work out what I did. I got so far and gave up, going back to it now I'm not sure what I did exactly, will post something when I have had time to look at it again.

 

I know my Mod involved lots of changes to Countries, Aircraft, Vehicles, Ships etc but the basic scenery stuff was quite simple as I remember. Will try to cobble something together for you that adds the extra buildings and trees.

 

PS: No credit to me, I just hacked Birdy666's mod around to fit. If your out there Birdy this is still the best Mod I use.

With the terrain tools that ED released and 3D Max, a modder can make any object shape and place it anywhere he/she wishes in the game map (yes, even pre-existing maps).

 

Actual 3D trees which are collide-able could also be added.

I still can't get this working. My formatting/naming does not seem to be a problem with the files I edited, but I really have no idea why I can't select structures. As soon as I select Static Objects->Structures I get this popup error:

I have modified the unitsclasses.lua, TechnicsTable.lua, StructTable.lua, db_units_ground.lua, and db_countries.lua files, but the game works fine until I add either of the last two modified files. Are there any more files that need to be edited to be able to select new placeable items in the mission editor?

Sorry, I do not understand any of the Error file references at all so cannot help you there.

 

Those are the files I have changed, I do not think you need to change anything else.

 

As long as the item has the correct CLID number and that number has been added to the units_ground and the db_countries files in the right places it should work. The CLID number must be a valid number, I took mine from either my original Lomac or Bridy666's mod. There was a mod for creating new CLID numbers but I never got that to work.

 

The new item must be in either the Bazar/world/shapes file or the Terrain/structures/high files to work, if you are adding something completely new you might need to use an existing item as a clone for the new item: ie you overwrite "building ceh_a" with your new building, and change the name tag on the units_ground file to its new name.

 

What I have found is that if you erase a single comma, full stop, hyphen etc the game wont run at all. That can take a long time to identify and repair, I have been there several times and it is painfull work .... !!!. Check each line where you have made a change and see if you can identify something that looks out of place, a missing dot, an extra comma, just one error and it will not run, compare your new file against an original.

Hey guys, i am trying to get this working. I can place tree's in the mission editor, but ingame the tree's dissapear under the main ground. This happens at most of the airbase's. Also the one we are using. Is there a way to fix this?

I haven't encountered the issue you are talking about, but I haven't tried adding trees via the mission editor. All trees in my scenery mod come from Birdy's mod from FC1. I made modifications to his .scn file by decompiling and recompiling, but it only worked with the FC1 .scn file. In any case, you can use the FC1 scenery file that Birdy made if you aren't flying at a new airbase from FC2. This is what our team does.

 

The reason I needed help here with the mission editor was to add new objects to the game and be able to place them (such as our tool cart or show center truck), but I didn't try with trees. Also my objects are working properly above ground.

 

One thing you can check is opening the mission file with a text editor, finding the trees you added, and checking their respective altitudes. It should be listed next to their UTM lat/long coordinates in meters.

I've just had a go at adding a building , rather than replacing one and I am totally lost.

Could someone please go into just a little bit more detail on what I need to do to get this to work?

 

I can't find a source for CLID's so really I'm on a no starter, Even if I did I can't work out what to with it :helpsmilie:

 

I could just keep replacing them, but I would like to get this process down, it seems the proper way to do it.

 

I have a new model called "flats.LOM". and a very confused look on my face :confused:
