Flyby
I'm trying to sort out which version of Win7 to buy. I have a few sims that run on Win-XP (LOMAC/FC, IL2_1946). But I see that Win7 Home Premium does not have the Win-XP mode (see here: http://techreport.com/articles.x/18042/12 ) What version are you guys running? Also, any issues with just buying the OEM version, besides paying a license fee to transfer it to another machine? thanks all, Flyby out PS how about each of you giving me a rep for asking such penetrating questions? :megalol: The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.
AustinN360
You don't need XP mode to run any game that works on XP. I run Lockon FC and have run HL2, IL2 and BF 2142 on Win 7 x64 and x86 versions without any major issues.
Silent Warrior
Even Wing Commander Kilrathi Saga is supposed to work basically fine in Win7, no XP compatibility. (Not that it ran at all well in XP naturelle...) I'm sure Home Premium will suit you. (Unless you'd like to take a spin with Linux? :D )
104th_Crunch
Win-XP mode runs WinXP as a Virtual Machine. You won't get a good game performance from this mode because there is much slow down to run in WinXP as an emulation inside another operating system. WinXP mode will only be useful for productivity apps, other software and maybe some hardware that won't run in Win 7. Most games that run in XP will work fine in Win 7 anyway. Also, in every version of Win 7 you can try WinXP compatibility mode if you need to. Saying all that, in my own particular case, Lock On crashes on me all the time in Win7, but DCS:BS runs excellent. Flyby
thanks for that, Cat. My rig is going to be merely a gaming rig initially, and perhaps a backup to the wife's computer (which I've been allowed to use ;) ) Flyby out The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.
joey45
OEM is a lot cheaper but you don't get any fancy packaging and any xtras. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_equipment_manufacturer http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-oem.htm The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. I've blown up a couple of PCs and have been able to re-use a retail Windows version in the next rebuild. can't do that with an OEM version. Can I? GaryIKILLYOU
Hate to burst your bubble, but Windows 7 OEM will not be able to be ported to other PC's. If I where you, I would only go with the OEM version if I were only going to install Windows 7 on one computer. If your going to make multiple installs then I suggest the retail version. I have Windows 7 HP 64bit OEM by the way, and can run Lock On Flaming Cliffs 1.12b perfectly with no crashes. GaryIKILLYOU
As long as you keep the same motherboard you should be fine, but if your MoBo dies then you have to get another MoBo of the EXACT SAME MODEL and company or your S.O.L and you will have to buy another OEM disk...
