Mustang
Crazy, an AIM-9X fired from a submarine? http://www.deagel.com/news/AIM-9X-Missile-Demonstrates-Successful-Underwater-Launch_n000006550.aspx
GGTharos
It isn't crazy at all :) The reason they're doing it now is that the AIM-9X Mod2 now has a datalink, IIRC, and is thus capable of LOAL. In this respect you can protect your sub from an enemy aircraft employing MAD sensors as it overflies your position, or against other anti-submarine assets such as helicopters. You no longer need to have your presence betrayed by fighters patrolling overhead (or to be helpless when they are not available). This forces the enemy aircraft to higher altitude at minimum, if they wish to be safer, which also degrades their sensor capability. The other bonus is that the sub doesn't need to surface like it had to do to employ the stinger masts. nscode
The bonus is that you don't even need all does fancy sensors now to detect a sub. You just send in drones and wait for the sub to find you :) Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
GGTharos
... what drones? :) A sub isn't likely to engage anything that isn't a threat to it, AFAIK. Pilotasso
Subs can be harder to detect to other surface ships than F-22's. And you dont need to have the latest tech. Sub versus sub the rules change a bit. tflash
Indeed an ideal weapon against shipborne helicopter ASW assets. While they are hovering overhead listening for a ping you suddenly launch such a killer missile! Something for Silent Hunter 'X', hopefully also featuring MH-60R ! GGTharos
Yup, same idea :) Hit the enemy before they hit you - it's strictly a defensive weapon, but it opens up possibilities for new submarine pack tactics. rogue_blade
how is an aim9 going to get from underwater to an aircraft up to a 1000ft above the water? aim9 has like what...5 mile range when launched at speed and altitude. now it has to travel vertically with no forward and momentum.... ED Team Groove Posted September 16, 2009 ED Team Share Posted September 16, 2009 It's a last line of defense for sure. You won't shoot at anything without being absolutely forced to do so. You shoot down an ASW helo and you most certainly dead, if your opponent has a cappable navy. Lurking below the thermal layer is where you want to be when there are ASW helos above you. Pilotasso
It will work for helos but against planes will be hard. The missiles range is basicaly halved when launched from fixed ground (in this case: watery) instalations.
