Advice on compatible RAM

Recommended Posts

I've set up my old PC as a dedicated server. It's an i7-6700K on an ASUS Z170-P with 16GB RAM.

It performs very well as a server but gets very close to 100% RAM with some Syria missions.

I'd like to add some ram but not sure what would be compatible. It currently has 2 sticks of 8GB Kingston HX421C14FB2/8 DDR4 2133MHz CL14 DIMM which is no longer available.

Do I have to match the memory profile exactly : 2133MHz 14-14-14 ? I'm struggling to find any. I guess it's pretty old spec now. Would 2133MHz CL15 15-15-35 work ? Just really looking for some way to add another 8GB cheaply

To add Dram to what you currently have installed. You would need to match the model number specifically to ensure 100% stability.

Finding what model numbers or kits "MIGHT" work would be very trial and error. It would be best to sell what you have now and buy another kit, thats only my opinion.

I would get 32gb of 3200Mhz XMP probably as close to C16 as you can find.

Agreed with Bossco82. You run Intel CPU you can find more gain with 3600MHz, the trick is to find the right kit, roam the Intel forums and see what the most experienced players use, a good guess is Corsair Vengeance, A B-Die kit would help performances as well.

Thanks guys. So as the RAM currently installed is no longer available my only option is replacing it entirely or taking a chance on something similar which may noit work. With those options I'll just leave it for now as I can't justify spending much on that old pc.

Just get 32GB of inexpensive DDR4 3000 CL15 or 3200 CL16, whichever costs less.
With black friday going on, you'll easily see such kits around and below $100,00.

You might feel tempted to go instead for much slower speeds than that, thinking of lower prices, but they don't get much cheaper than that.

If on a budget, good purchase for the i7 6700K (kinda proven record, and supported by the majority of Z170 boards) is the Corsair Vengeance CMK32GX4M2E3200C16 and also Gskill RipjawsV F4-3200C16D-32GV (RB or KB or GB):
