AV-8B: Yet another “Should I buy this module or not?” Thread

VR Flight Guy in PJ Pants

Recommended Posts

I fly SP A2A, and some time mud moving in AJS-37, which I have to add is a blast, F-14B, and F/A-18C. A-10C ][ is added lately and I can say it is a killer (sorry pun intended). Rotary is the least for now but may change the Apache comes around. So after Apache and MB-339, I am thinking about if AV-8B would be next or not.

I know this is no A2A plane and until we have an actual F-35B or V-22 module, this is the only VTOL plane I can play with. I have heard good and bad things about this module, so your honest comments and advice would be very much appreciated.

Even in those early days I had never regretted the Harriet. I don't know whether it is part of the 14 days free trial program from ED but I doubt you would want to give it back after 14 days anyways.

Edit: and if you play VR it's a no brainer.

I just got the Harrier from the Halloween Sale, so I can only give a first impression. So far, I´m loving it and can´t say anything negative about it.
I agree with Tom: VTOL landings on a carrier in VR are amazing.

Whether you should buy it or not is hard to tell, with A-10, F14 and F18, you have most of the stuff covered already (ground attack, A2A, Carrier Ops). Being able to operate from a FOB however is rather unique to the Harrier.

I trialed it during the first free-trial period in 2020.  One VR STO and SRVL on the Tarawa and I bought it immediately.  And don't dismiss the A2A ability.  It isn't a BVR plane, but I got a Fox-2 shot off on a MiG-29 16 seconds after the merge.  I also gunned a buddy down in his F-14B 5 times before running out of ammo.

The Harrier was my first full fidelity module, and I have loved every minute of it. Personally, the way it moves around when your flying, especially while low, gives it an edge over the Hornet which is very solid. Like every module, it has its little issue's but the Pro's definitely outweigh the Con's. BUY IT!!! lol

You can see all the modules I own down in my sig. The Harrier is probably the plane I have the most stick time in. Out of all my modules it's easily in my top 3 favorite (AV-8B, F-14, F-16). She can carry an absolute boatload of ordnance, you get naval ops through the included Tarawa, and you can do STOL/VTOL off roads or FARPs. One of my favorite things is to do SEAD; fly very low and as fast, use as much terrain masking as possible, and pop those SAMs with the AGM-122 Sidearms and follow up with whatever other ordnance you prefer.

She's quite unique and a lot of fun. Hopefully you'll enjoy testing the module.

I kind of lost interest in the Harrier after the AGM-65 debacle, and the constant changes to how things work, but every time I get back into it I really enjoy it. And I'm back to flying it regularly. And Therio made a great skin that I really like: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3318784/

I got the Av8B a few days ago and it's a really great module.

I do find the switchology really strange after using the A-10 etc, but if you've got the patience to learn the sensor manipulations to designate and then employ weapons then you'll be fine.

I've definitely had a few issues where everything is working fine and the weapon just absolutely refuses to fire. These aren't issues with the module, but limitations and restrictions of the actual aircraft. Once I had accidentally bumped my nozzles which disabled weapons for example, so I locked a maverick and it just refused to come off the rail.

Landing and taking off is a joy. I sometimes just fly patterns for fun.

If there's one thing I think could use updating, it is the canon sound. The rest of the sounds are 10/10.

Don't forget to remove chocks when you first load in.

I dunno, but from the videos, it looks more like a F/A-18C than an A-10C.

Which one of them hovers easier - Harrier or Huey?

Beauty! Enjoy. And don't forget the carrier action and that great night vision cockpit.

The Harrier is still one of my top three.

Agreed. The gun sound is weak.

I´m no expert in either, but I find the Harrier is easier to hover (at least in a somewhat steady fashion), but getting there is more difficult than in the Huey.
I think, once it´s still in the air, the Harrier seems more stable than the Huey.

  • 2 weeks later...

Bought it over A10 trying both at the same time. Didn't even get to serious weapon employment to make the decision. After couple of hours moving around with both, hog felt soo sluggish to fly, while harrier is very fast in subsonic speeds and even quite easy to VTOL. Gives fun just flying. Got frustrated a bit with Mavs employment, but I do better now.

I may get the hog anyway as it is one of the planes I have always liked, just not enough time to enjoy both now, and have pre-ordered apache.. I have a hornet already which is great but flies like glued to tracks, I sometimes get mig21 and do some bombing and rockets just for fun of the analog plane also in multiplayer. A4 mod is great but hard to find any server for it. So ended up looking for some A2G non fbw machine with guided weapons option - so here it is and it can VTOL :)
