Hard crash with 2.7.3

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,
since stable 2.7 I only have problems. Before 2.7 I could play with my old I3 -7350K, 16GB RAM and a GTX 970 DCS without any problems. Even VR with the Quest2 went on low settings. With 2.7 I only have hard crashes. I now have an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8x 3.60GHz with 32 GB RAM and a new Win10 installation on a 2TB SATA 6GB / s and my old GTX 970. With minimal settings I was able to fly stable for a while after a lot of new driver installations. GPU runs on 100%. The Sim crashes again now on medium settings. What's wrong ??? Can someone help me? Here is the last log file. The GPU is certainly the bottleneck, but DCS has to be playable.
I hope someone can help me. Pleeeeeeease!

System:

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8x 3.60GHz

32 GB RAM DDR4

2TB SATA 6GB/s

NVIDIA GTX 970

DCS stable 2.7.3

No MODS
DCS update/repair done

fxo and metashader2 clean

and I did the TdrDdiDelay & TdrDelay thing for the GraphicsDriver

all Drivers updated

Hi. Your issue looks more like a freeze than a crash to me. Your log ends abruptly on this "SOUND: bufferEvent has timed out" error message :

Pilot Ike was having the smae kind of freeze back in June:

@Pilot IkeAre you still getting those? And have you customized TdrDdiDelay & TdrDelay registerr keys as well? I'm asking because I need to be sure it's a freeze and not a crash hidden by large Tdr values.

yes, you could say FREEZE as well. I have the same like Ike: "I cannot exit the game at that point anymore, open up Task manager or anything. Only a hard system master reset works for a full reboot of the system." I can fly and out of nothing the screens turns black or sometimes pink or similar and I still can hear noises from the plane, but the sim crashes and I have to reset to restart the PC. I did changed the TdrDdiDelay and TdRDelay only in the GraphicDrivers registry. What do you mean with register keys?

The method I know uses the Windows regisry. I didn't know the graphics driver would allow to change this but it's a good thing.

Can you please attach your dxdiag log? Here's how to get it.

I am so happy to report that these crashes haven't plagued me any more.

In my case, it looks like it was the PSU acting up. I customized TdrDdiDelay & TdrDelay registerr keys as instructed by you, but it didn't help. At first I was only seeing these kinds of crashes with DCS, while for example Microsoft Flight Simulator worked without any problems for hours and hours, so I thought it had to  be something with DCS. But then one day I had the same kind of crash when starting Discord, which made me suspicious, and then the problem got worse by the hour, seeing those crashes with Youtube videos for example. So I thought it's the GPU, sent it to my brother to check it in his system. He didn't notice any problems, so we concluded it must be the PSU then. Installed new PSU, and voila, no such crashes any more so far.

I see you have two old HDDs. Please ensure you have no pagefile stored on them. Launch the following command in a "cmd" window and paste the answer here:

wmic pagefile list /format:list

you mean this:

AllocatedBaseSize=5120
CurrentUsage=11
Description=C:\pagefile.sys
InstallDate=20210720205838.306143+120
Name=C:\pagefile.sys
PeakUsage=13
Status=
TempPageFile=FALSE

I found on E: a pagefile.sys
E: is an old HDD

Should I delete it?

Yes, precisely, thanks.

It seems everything is in order here: Windows chose one of your fastest drive (an NVMe) with plenty of free space.

New CPU means new motherboard. Please ensure in BIOS that your PCIE is set on either "Auto" or "Gen4," but not "Gen3".

And while you're at it, try enabling PBO in BIOS (Precision Boost Overdrive).

It seems that it was always the gpu. Pc suddenly went off. Completely off. After cmos reset the pc starts but screen stays black and 1x short and 2 long warning tones signals that the gpu is broken.

I really hope that nothing else is broken and I will have to wait until I find a new gpu. Hopefully a test tomorrow with a card from a friend clarifies that everything else is still OK. (I am prayin)

does your pc have an on-board gpu? it could be that you have to disable that before it will boot to other gpu. doubtful but.. beep codes for your motherboad https://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/bios-beep-codes though nothing for "1 short 2 long". however '1 long 2 short - Monitor or display card error'

So we are still invastigating. It might be a combination of wrong working PSU (530W) AND (?) GPU. A simple graphic card works fine. PC has no problems. (no games though)

A different graphic card (Radeon 5700xt) and same problems as with old card: screen stays black and warning tone 1 long and 2 short. The Radeon  works stable in a different PC. We will check next week the GTX 970 with a new PSU (700W) as well with the Radeon. Unfortunately I can't test the 970 with the PC of my friend.
We will see what's happening. If you are interested I will let you know.

It seems that i will have to pause DCS for a while....😭

  • 2 weeks later...

Last update: My old graphic card was the reason. It had some malefunction (maybe because of an incorrect working PSU?) It destroyed partly the PCI Slot on the new mainboard. An older Graphic crad is working now (4 Lanes instead of 8 lanes). Will need a new mainboard and new graphic card. What a ....

Thank you all for your support.

Bye
