AMD RX 6900 XT Extreme Edition vs. RTX 3090?

Recommended Posts

I've been on the Nvidia wagon for many years but did use an AMD GPU many years back without issues. As the world has gone insane and you can't buy a 3090 for under €2500 i'm leaning toward a 6900 XT Extreme (self-contained water cooling) for about €800 less and available. Are there any reasons NOT to move to an AMD GPU? All test I have seen show it withing 10% of the 3090 and much faster than my current 2080.. Thank you for any input!

EDIT: I think Alexa was listening again, as soon as I wrote this I got a one day 25% off flyer for a Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 3090 Trinity OC 24GB GDDR6X and pulled the trigger immediately. Couple hundred € more than the 6900 XT but I can live with that... be here in 2 days. 😊

Hey Icer! Cool screenshot, you weren't quick enough you know!
Just kidding. Maybe I should get Alex as well. No thing's available where I live except for second hand or 2060s for around USD 700.
Oh, well!

I guess I would ask €400 plus shipping, but I'm not selling it for a few weeks, until I know the 3090 doesn't cook..

RX6900XT or RTX3090 is an actual question for me too.

Is anyone able to give pros and cons for these? I will use it with my Reverb G2 and want the best solution for gaming in DCS in VR.

Yes, the prices are insane (+€3000) in some places but I was able to only pay a "crazy" amount (€1700+VAT) for mine.  😉

I'm currently running a 6900XT in my 5900X in VR (G2 and Pimax). Though I'm still trying to fine tune my settings on the 6900XT, it's running really well in high settings. Though I'm around 45-60FPS, I still get some stuttering while looking outside. Haven't tested on Multiplayer yet.

I've been using a 3090 for a few weeks as well and I think the cards are both great at DCS with some tweaking needed for VR. It can be a pain between Steam VR, WMR, In Game and Radeon/Nvidia settings.

Any noticeable difference between both? I guess the 3090 should be a bit faster or that is not the case in DCS?

Thanks

Everything I read (Benchmarks) shower the 6900XT was on par with the RTX 3080ti and about 10% slower than the RTX 3090, but the main reason I went with the Nvidia was compatibility with all the sims\games I have. In IL2 some people get a lot of strange graphic anomalies with the AMD cards they don't get with the RTX cards. This may be due to their settings, overclocking, or something else they are doing incorrectly but I like to keep things simple..

In my experience with VR, the 6900XT is almost up there with my 3090. Not sure if that it works well or better with the AMD Ryzen 5900X CPU. The frame rates are about the same but there is some noticeable lag or slight stutter with the 6900XT when looking out the sides just at the plain ground. It doesn't run as hot as my 3090 either.

And I agree with GaryR, a lot of games and monitors are designed to take advantage of Nvidia's technology.

I should probably do some better benchmark tests. I just got a 5800X chip and will try that out, too.

Maybe slightly of topic, but as buying a new GPU becomes a possibility again with increased stock, I am trying to figure out which one. I currently run a 2070 with an AMD 5600x and 32gb and a Quest2. Having followed the different treads, I think go for the card with the most vram. A 3080 or even 3080ti with “only” 12gb seem to not makes sense to me as I hear the newer maps need more memory. So I have been looking at the AMD 6800 with 16gb or the only other option the 3090.

is my assumption correct? This card would only be used for DCS, no other games.

AMD RYZEN 7 2700 / 32GB / RTX2070 / 500GB M.2 with Windows and DCS / 2 - 500GB SSD / Rift S/ TM Warthog with F18 stick and Virpil WarBRD / Foxx Mounts/ MFG Crosswind rudders + 3 MFD's | Now enjoying VR with PointCTRL controllers + Gamematrix JetSeat

That's interesting with these microstutters of AMD GPUs in DCS! Because of price I am nearly buying a RX6800XT or RX6900XT. Better I wait to get money for a RTX3090 I think (my PC should let be the hardware in my signature)!

With the 6900XT, I'm getting close to 90FPS in my Reverb G2 with the visibility set to ULTRA and high settings, and it's smooth with no stutters over NTTR.

If I go to EXTREME it drops to 45-60 FPS and there are some micro stutters. I also turned off all the settings in the Radeon software.

This is on a 5900X but will test with a 5800X soon.

I have a 6900XT though currently running with a 3600X, there is a newer 6900XT GPU out there (well 2 actually) that most board partners are adding the ultimate label to it. These cards clock higher and seems to be able to edge the RTX 3090 out as long as you are not using ray tracing or DLSS (if your game supports it).

One thing to consider is that Nvidia cards do not have a scheduler on them so it uses more CPU resources to run then AMD cards, meaning if you are in a CPU limited situation then the AMD card will edge ahead of the Nvidia card by a good amount. Though the 5900X or even a 5800X as well as Intel 10th gen and 11th generation CPUs with probably 6 or more cores should be fine here, though something to take into consideration depending on full system specs. The 6900XT caps GPU clock speeds to 3000Mhz and 2150MHz on the memory, the 6900XT ultimate will go to 4000MHz though this is only useful on LN2 cooling these cards will clock higher at the same voltages.

Will be interesting to see what Nvidia and AMD bring to the table next year as well as what Intel can cook up.

edit: the card above this is an AMD only 6900XT liquid cooled card that is currently only being sold to OEM which allows for increased bandwidth for the DDR6 video ram.

When you say you’re getting 90fps, is that with motion smoothing off? If so do you still see ghosting on close up A-A engagements.

I’m wondering what sort of improvements I might be able to get when I eventually upgrade my i7700k @4.8 and 2080ti because as things stand right now in DCS, things are pretty good even generally in MP. Other sims, completely different story but I’m starting to realise how much I sometimes take DCS VR performance, at least on my Reverb G1, for granted.

I’d be interested in your thoughts.

I find the near 90 fps claim with the Reverb G2 rather difficult to believe. On medium-high settings (visibility high, basic shadows but not flat), 50% resolution (in steam VR, the physical native resolution of the G2) and no anti-aliasing, I typically get 45-50 fps with reprojection forced off. This is with a 2080 Super. Admittedly a 6900XT is a fair bit faster, but I find it hard to believe it's that much faster especially since the 45-50 fps cap is due to the CPU in most cases (10600k at 4.9 GHz).

Please share the full list of settings FETUS, if you really are getting performance on that level I'd love to know how.

System specs: i5-10600k (4.9 GHz), RX 6950XT, 32GB DDR4 3200, NVMe SSD, Reverb G2, WinWing Super Libra/Taurus, CH Pro Pedals.

Sorry been away from home for a bit.

@Willie NelsonWhen I say 90, it's sometime 82-90 FPS over NTTR with just a few ground units. I will probably go back to the 5900X CPU for more testing. I came from a 9900KF and 2080 Super and saw a pretty substantial difference going to the 5800X/5900X and 6900XT and 3090. If you decide to upgrade, you would find a new CPU and GPU will pair nicely with a G1. I also run a G1 and a PIMAX 8kx but prefer the simplicity of the G2. The G1 is a good HMD but the G2 has better audio and clarity, though it was a pain to pair with a X570 Mobo without a call to HP support and a additional PCI USB Card.

@BeastyBaiter I know, I found it hard to believe myself. I found that messing with the view settings made most difference in FPS. I came from a 2080 Super, too. Went to a 3090 and now trying the 6900XT since it's mated with a AMD CPU.

I'm currently on a 5800X (OC'd in CTR 2.0) and 6900XT in Rage mode that is slightly OC'd and not hitting close to  90 FPS with the G2, around  65-75FPS over NTTR. I run PD 1.0 in game and 100% in Steam In App settings. I also force DX11 and use the FHolger dll mod. Motion smoothing off.  MSAA off.  Tac View Off. Seems like the last patch caused my FPS to drop some. Someone mentioned the shader mod in another thread that I need to try. I tried to get the most performance out of my 2080 Super (fine with the G1) but with the G2, it really likes the 6900Xt and 3090. And the difference is quite substantial making the jump to the newer cards.
