Chimney smoke, burning vehicles and missile trail animation are messed up

Recommended Posts

all these animations look like they are in stop frame photography, animations switch from 1 frame to another...no fluidity at all...looks horrible

No change in latest patch...smoke, burning vehicles, missile trails animations are still  animating like its "stop frame photography ". Strange thing is, engine exhaust and wing tip contrails are fluid. Why the difference?

Videos are too big to upload here and since its a graphic issue, I'm not sure they would show up on your machine(like the btr trk you sent me awhile back).Would a trk file show you what I see?

You can upload videos thanks to Youtube or Streambale if you want, it's free.

A track would help because it replicates what you see and what you do. It helps a lot to better understand what the issue is:

  • If we get the same result, chances are it's a matter of 3D/2D Art.
  • If we get very different results, chances are it's a bug, or maybe a shader issue.

By the way, I was able to replicate your isse with the BTR. This helped me understand it was a game bug, not and issue on your side only (BTR only appears all black in Shval when seen in old missions).

tank

show chimney smoke as well to compare

Why is it not saving the trk file?

The Merkava had the same issue BTW

that's exactly what I did but it would not save....your smoke via video is much more fluid. I'll load it into game now to compare

Big difference...trk file viewed on my system is displaying the issue I've reported...animation speed is about half(maybe more) I really see it in the fire as well. Again engine "dirty smoke" or wing tip trails are fluid, which is making me wonder what's up with the other animations.

If I had to describe it ...It looks like  a 1940's putt putt from a car cartoon

OK, I understand what you describe. Please attach your dcs.log file ( C:\Users\username\Saved Games\DCS...\Logs\dcs.log - may appear as "dcs" ). We'll see if we can find a clue.

For now, let's assume it's a shader issue. Try this:

  • Empty your fxo folder ( C:\Users\username\Saved Games\DCS...\fxo )
  • Empty your metashaders2 folder ( C:\Users\username\Saved Games\DCS...\metashaders2 )
  • If you have an NVIDIA GPU, empty the NV_Cache folder ( C:\ProgramData\NVIDIA Corporation\NV_Cache ) If Windows tells you some files can't be deleted, just hit "Ignore".
  • EDIT: I see you have an AMD GPU, empty this folder: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\AMD\DxCache

Then DCS will rebuild shaders once you launch it. Does it solve the issue?

Cannot delete all that's in AMD folder(not sure I want to anyway as I have other games with profiles), metashader folder was empty. Going in now.

No change...meta folder still empty...and cannot save trk files. Did not delete AMD folder files as it wouldn't let me due to files being in use(also I don't really want to mess with that folder due to profiler settings for multiple games...nor do I feel I should have too).

Edit ...with that said, is it safe to delete those folders?...will it affect other games or profiles? I have no idea what's in there

Animations still look slow in frame rendering.

Why would the meta folder be empty anyways??

Would application override settings have anything to do with it?

EDIT of an edit...my mistake, the files in the AMD folder are bin not iso (mistook the icon=file extension, they are using power iso icons for some reason)...but...could it be that windows isn't accessing the bin files because power iso is slated to handle bin files via power iso's default setup?  Therefore not loading the shaders in DCS??

Ahah, so many question marks in your post! Some answers:

Is it safe to delete those folders? [the DxCache folder]...will it affect other games or profiles?

Yes, otherwise I wouln't ask. AMD DxCache folder holds shaders which were generated by your driver when loading games such as DCS. They will be generated again the next time you launch these games, DCS included. More info here.

By the way, I had forgotten to add the "DxCache" folder in the path, my mistake.

Why would the meta folder be empty anyways??

I don't have the slightest idea. It seems this metashaders2 folder is populated while you're playing DCS, but it depends on the mission. Sometimes I see it empty, sometimes not. But it should be empty whenever DCS is not launched.

Would application override settings have anything to do with it?

You mean anything to do with your issue? It could, yes. You could try to reset completely your DCS profile in your AMD driver software, if you have any.

Could it be that windows isn't accessing the bin files because power iso is slated to handle bin files via power iso's default setup?  Therefore not loading the shaders in DCS??

Nope, Windows doens't work like this. You simply told Windows to open .bin files with PowerIso whenever YOU double-click such a file. This setting doesn't affect apps. It means AMD is still able to generate .bin files and to open them. No worrries.

Are you using software such as MSI Afterburner to affect a profile to DCS? If so, try to disable such profiles and see if your issue persists.

No change after deleting AMD files...I'm not using MSI afterburner or any overclocks...will try disabling  override settings next.

edit...still no change with overrides off, all smoke related animations are still cartoonlike...overly so.

Was able to fix the save trk file issue by deleting the saved game dcs folder...here is the trk file...is this normal for smoke?
