What do you use the CP2 for - apart from the landing gear handle!

You can adjust the level of zoom by changing the saturation in DCS axis fine tuning.  Pity to lose the variable zoom, I would say, but each to his own.

 

BTW, I have now configured the CP2 as a standalone USB rather than a slave. So, I have got the rotaries as virtual axes. Just about to try it out on the Spit trim. I'll let you know!

OK, very good and good news.  Using axes, the rudder trim is smoother, but still moves at the same speed as the hat, but that is an improvement.  However, the elevator trim is way faster than the hat. Too fast maybe the way I have it set up.  I just need to lower the step value.

Still feels like the trim hat on the stick is better.  Just because it's more intuitive and you don't have to take your hand off the throttle and fumble around for the rotary.

I decided to try your suggestion of using saturation to bring the zoom axis under control - works very well. I may just keep it this way.

 

As for the trim, I think I would keep it on the stick for pretty much all the modules, except the port-starboard of the spit, if using a rotary there can make it faster.

It’s only the elevator trim that is faster, the rudder trim is the same. 
In flight, with the constant need to trim the Spit, to me, the stick trim hat is much more suitable.

In case anyone hasn't already figured this out, one thing I found useful was to map two more logical buttons to the T7 and T8 switches so that they activate when the toggle switch moves to the middle (physical off) position. This provides buttons to use by just lifting the red guards (for example, lifting guards = fire extinguishers, pressing the toggles up = eject). Or it could be useful for master arm on/off using the red toggle guard, etc.

OK, so I worked it out.

Add a new logical button for physical 23, then changed the original config of physical 23 to inverted.  So, now Windows sees the flip switch in up and down as 2 different logical buttons which gives use a 3 position option now.  So easy to bind cover open/close as well as the switch activation.

I don't have the F-5, but are those assignments designed for maintained toggles rather than momentary toggles?

They are momentary, but 3 way on-off-on for guns, off and camera, so up down and cover open/close needed. 
Can’t see how to get it to work, especially as the cover will only go down in the middle ‘off’ position.

If the assignments are designed for a maintained toggle switch I don't think there is anyway to replicate it with a momentary toggle - even if you assign logical buttons to on and off of both poles, the switch will still always flick back to the centre position.

 

I've always been surprised that Virpil never puts any maintained toggles on their controls - even one or two would be quite useful and leave the rest as momentary toggles.

We're probably at cross purposes.  So, there is an up and down bind.  Let's start from the middle OFF position. Pressing up once moves switch to GUNS, from there, pressing it down once, brings it to OFF, pressing down again brings it to CAMERA.  The reverse is also true.

So, the physical switch is momentary (doesn't have to be held in place), but the virtual switch remains in position.

As far as I can see what you are describing is a physical momentary toggle switch trying to simulate a virtual maintained toggle switch.

 

You would need a button to activate twice in each direction. With the guard toggle we can go up twice (1 = lift guard, 2= press toggle up), but only down once (close guard).

 

The only option is just using an unguarded toggle -  up-up, down-down. 

 

If that's not what you meant then I'm at a loss.

Do you have the Viper?  The Zeroize switch is the same as the F-5E one we have been discussing.  Try to work that one out.

Yes, for that switch you would need a three position maintained toggle switch to work properly. The best you can do is set:

 

lifting the guard = ZEROIZE Switch cover - OPEN

press toggle up = ZEROIZE Switch - UP

press toggle down = ZEROIZE Switch - DOWN

 

Nothing else will work with a momentary toggle to get you all three options; OPF,OFF,DATA.
