I could see it working well to identify aircraft further than the TCS can but since there are no cues for the pilot hud like the TCS cross, it would take a lot of coordination. I never got it to work air to air even with a human pilot but I only briefly fussed with it. As you mentioned I never heard of it really being used that way; nevermind we had the pod for a reason and I needed to be looking for my actual ground targets..
