No VR Mask in flight on screen mirror

Hi @BIGNEWY, I realise you've probably got bigger fish to fry but could I at least have this logged as an issue please.

I've seen a few others report the same issue on other threads and I'd guess, because nobody was expecting the feature, that it's more widely experienced and simply not reported.

I don't get a VR Mask at all on my screen mirror while in VR flight. Screen image is the regular square shape.

I've tried a long repair with removal of additional files, allowed DCS to recreate my Save Games etc.
I've checked that I have the HMDMask.fx file.

I'm using a Reverb G2 with a 3090 and I know a number of G2/3090 users are seeing the VR Mask correctly.

I'd previously always used the kegetys' mask mod to gain a few FPS but that's no longer maintained/working as ED are now doing their own.

I attach a dcs.log file where I just load DCS from SteamVR and start the Hornet Caucasus instant action free flight. No mods installed and settings are using the default VR profile.

What are those round edges in every corner? Could it be that this is the VR mask, but the screen is still cropped to much so you can't see it?

Wow,good spot @RealDCSpilot!

@ShaunX

those are the mask! Gimme a moment!

from the colour, I’d even say MSAA is off for that picture... Go check this file:

 C:\Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World OpenBeta\Bazar\shaders\HMDMask.fx

and check this line  is still:

float4 vsOctagonMask(in float2 pos:POSITION0): SV_POSITION0

{

return float4(pos, 1, 1);

}

And not or any value less than 1

float4 vsOctagonMask(in float2 pos:POSITION0): SV_POSITION0

{

return float4(pos, 0.1, 0.1);

}

..I just tried increasing the values to 1.2 (as opposed to reducing them, which I've  seen others use to expand the mask's bounds until it's off the screen and therefore effectively off).

All that did was to bring the 4 tiny corner triangles about 15% in towards the centre, but they're still just tiny triangles and the area outside of them is still rendering

getting closer then... the mask is dependent on the headset (AFAICT) so the VIVE mask is different etc...

It's OVER !

I got a bunch of windows updates yesterday including a features update (I'm still on Windows 10, version 2004) and all of a sudden I'm getting the VR Mask in flight !

Interestingly, as I've been benchmarking since 2.7 I've been able to repeat that with the VR Mask and can confirm that it definately improves framerates and FPS

So, a belated thank you to ED !

Same here with Quest 2 (without Steam). DCS renders also outside of the the rectangle.

Maybe also an Win10 update issue. I will check later if installing the newest patches will help.

the mask in the centre of the screen is normally due to the values being set greater than 1 in the lua file described here

Right, but shouldn’t the Mask prevent DCS rendering all outside of the mask?

only if 1 or less...

if you have set the mas bigger than 1,  you are essentially comfortable with reducing you FOV for better frame rates?  You may want to try adjusting the in game IPD/world scale or if you are on the SteamVR beta adjusting the FOV option

I'm on Oculus and the mask is completely gone since the last update.

You have a setting also in Oculus DebugTool. 😉

On my side I battled to get rid of it, I had the mask with option set to off in DCS.😅

That´s a FOV limiter, it´s different from VR Mask as first is squared and second has the shape of the lens making it way more efective to reduce pixel count, and the option you refer has nothing to do with the mask, it´s a super sampling mask, there you change the radius of the zone you want to apply super sampling.

I still don´t have the VR mask over SteamVR API, is frustrating...
