Ironhand
Hi folks. A quick note to let you know that there's a new tutorial on my site: F-15C Radar: Single Target Track (STT) and Flood Modes. The goal of this tutorial is to introduce you to the AN/APG-63's STT and Flood modes with the AIM-7 as the selected missile. We discuss the positives and negatives of these modes and begin a discussion of the Dynamic Launch Zone scale: what it is and how to use it. And, we actually shoot someone down today. :) You'll find it on the A2A page. It's marked as the latest addition (it's 2nd on the list below the AN-APG-63 Intro tutorial). jonob66
Excellent vid / tutorial. One thing that puzzles me though. In STT mode on the top left you get the aspect angle readout. In your example the bandit was left of you yet the aspect showed 15R. Why? I should know this but am having a dementia moment.:hmm: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

In your example the bandit was left of you yet the aspect showed 15R. Why? That's because the aspect angle is expressing your relationship to him (you are to the right of HIS nose), not his relationship to you. 3Sqn_Sven
Nice job Rich, that video was awesome. I learnt at least a half a dozen things that I had not picked up even after 5 years of Lock On. 3Sqn - Largest distributor of Flanker, Fulcrum and Frogfoot parts in the Black Sea Region
Ironhand
Thanks folks. Nice job Rich, that video was awesome. I learnt at least a half a dozen things that I had not picked up even after 5 years of Lock On. And I've been learning a lot in the process of creating the tutorials. Keep in mind that the F-15 is not my primary aircraft. :) Rich YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCU1...CR6IZ7crfdZxDg _____ Win 10 Pro x64, ASUS Z97 Pro MoBo, Intel i7-4790K, EVGA GTX 970 4GB, HyperX Savage 32GB, Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB SSD, 2x Seagate Hybrid Drive 2TB Raid 0. IvanK
Great Video as usual. Question in FLOOD mode you demonstrate that as long as you have the target in the FLOOD circle and you are inside Raero you get a launch strobe. To me I think this is a SIM bug and shouldnt happen in the jet. I am streching the atrophying neurons back 20 years or so but in the Hornet I dont recall any Launch or range indication for FLOOD mode.
hitman
Wouldnt Flood mode only be used in WVR, since you pretty much have to have eyeballs on target anyways?

IvanK
In the Hornet (circa 1987 :) FLOOD mode was not pilot selectable per see. FLOOD mode would activate if you launched an AIM7 without out a lock or the lock was lost during the missile time of flight. The main antenna was commanded to a stowed position, a separate FLOOD antenna provided FLOOD illumination. FLOOD mode stayed on for between 75-105 seconds (cant remember what controlled this) or the pilot manually returned to search. When FLOOD mode was exited the radar returned to the settings that were selected before FLOOD activated. With AIM7 selected without radar lock the HUD displayed the AIM7 FOV circle. If you fired the only change in HUD symbology was the FLOOD text cue. No Fire zone envelope information whatsoever was displayed. Hornet AIM 7 No lock .... when the Kiwis actually had fast jets :) Edited September 28, 2008 by IvanK
GGTharos
And that's exactly how it should be in the F-15C as well. :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda

I think I mention in the tutorial that it's only good within 10nm. ANd, then, that range depends on a lot of other variables.
