DCS 2.7 minimizing when working on a second monitor

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I hope you can help me with this issue.

Since installing the 2.7 update I noticed that DCS minimizes automatically whenever I click on my second monitor.

This didn’t happen before.

Is there a fix?

Thanks for your help!

I just wonder why a bug like this get's through to the release version? Did really non of the testers noticed this or uses a second monitor?

I noticed it within the first minute of use!!

Okay!...I will test this out right away...

Did something change here with the latest update?

UPDATE: Unchecking the Fullscreen option indeed solves the issue. Issue SOLVED!

I would not call that "solved" because when switching to Full Screen brings back the bug. It's a work around...

Now full screen works as intended, when alt tabted it will minimize, allow to access desktop, so if you have multiple monitors you need to use borderless window, just like every other game now.

Borderless window = fullscreen unchecked as i see it now, before 2.7 when you unchecked this option game would restart in window mode.

Clicking on a second monitor is not really the same as alt-tabbing if you ask me. With DCS in Full Screen mode it should stay Full Screen on that monitor without minimizing when the mouse is brought over to the second monitor. Period. And... since i have a G-Sync monitor it needs full screen to work best, in windowed mode it can be a less smooth on some programs (like scrolling in browsers for example).

I lose 10 to 15 FPS when I switch off full screen. Given my rtx 2060 super does about 40 to 60 FPS in full screen, turning off the full screen mode is too much to lose. And please don’t suggest buying an rtx 3000 series. Stock levels are zero or unaffordable. Nvidia, please sort your stuff out.

And not in today's update either...☹️  (worked fine 2.5.6).

Which also still leaves my question unanswered: if you press ALT-ENTER repeatedly, how do you know when you are in borderless windowed mode or in full screen mode.

So it was a bug before then (and other games have that same bug)?

And i still feel that when monitor 1 is in full screen and i click on monitor 2, monitor 1 should stay in full screen mode and not minimizing what's on display. That's just pretty useless.

I ran a few comparison tests not because i was bothered with a frame drop after upgrading to 2.7 but because of the change in full screen behavior on a multi monitor system.

Since i lock my FPS to 60 and because with my settings i can stay above it, i don't notice those frame drops.

But the difference in the way full screen works between 2.5.6 and 2.7 (or 2.7.1 for that matter) made me make a comparison with the FPS unlocked so i could see the difference in FPS between the various modes.

First this:

Full screen mode in 2.5.6: if full screen is ticked, the main monitor will keep displaying DCS full screen when the mouse is moved over to the second screen and this monitor is activated by clicking on it.

Full screen mode in 2.7.1: if full screen is ticked, the main monitor will put DCS to minimized when the mouse is moved over to the second screen and this monitor is activated by clicking on it.

Now the difference between in FPS 2.5.6 and 2.7.1 full screen or not (test scenario: A-10A on Take-off in Nevada map)

(my game settings don't really matter, it's the FPS number that counts)

2.5.6 full screen: 140 FPS

2.5.6 windowed mode (full screen unticked): 117 FPS

The same thing happens when switching between modes by pressing Alt-Enter.

If in full screen and alt-enter is pressed to go into windows mode, the FPS goes from 140 to 117 and vice versa.

But in full screen DCS does not minimize when going to the second monitor.

2.7.1 full screen: 120 FPS (a drop by 20 compared to 2.5.6)

2.7.1 windowed mode (full screen unticked): 116 FPS (almost no drop compared with 2.5.6 !!!!)

If i press alt-enter to switch between modes, it goes from 120 to 116 and vice versa BUT...

But in 2.7.1 in full screen DCS does minimize when going to the second monitor and the icon on the taskbar needs to be clicked to bring it back to the front on the main monitor.

This topic should not be considered "solved" !!!

That this topic is set to "solved" doesn't help either.

I'm waiting on the next 2.7 update (not the hotfixes) and if it then still act like it does now, i'll raise a support ticket to get things moving.

Just like those crashes nobody at ED or closed beta tester team seamed to have, none of them seems to be running a multi monitor setup with DCS only on the main monitor.

Feel free to open a new thread. 👍

I don't have a multi monitor setup, and I don't know about the rest of the testing team. Chances are at least one ED dev has a multi monitor setup since this feature is supported by DCS.

It's not really a multi-monitor problem where DCS is spread across more then one monitor.

It's when DCS is only showing on one (the main) monitor and then something is done on the second monitor, like opening an aircraft doc or whatever.

The moment one clicks on the second monitor, DCS on the main monitor minimizes when Full Screen is selected in the settings.

The only way around this problem is unticking Full Screen but then DCS runs in Windowed borderless mode and this has an impact on performance.

This problem occurs since the 2.7 release, 2.5.6 is just fine.

I also already asked how i can see the difference between Full Screen and Windows Borderless Mode (without looking at FPS counter), nobody seems to know the answer.

In fact it's exactly the same issue as the topic starter but he considered switching to Windows Borderless Mode as a solution which is not the case.

I could start a new topic for exactly the same problem but then i'm 100% somebody will point to this post as a solution which it isn't if you want to run Full Screen with a side monitor.

and...
