Nvidia Shadowplay & OBS - slightly choppy track playback at times. How to fix??

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

My simple questions - Is there a way of recording my on screen game footage as it happens in such a way that when I play back the recording it will be exactly the same in terms of fps/ smoothness as my actual real-time game?

I've tried both OBS and Shadowplay and in both cases I seem to occasionally have a drop in fps during the playback. When I actually do the recording to begin with it's perfectly smooth. But during playback occasionally there's a stutter or a drop in fps. I don't get why!! How can it record bits of stuttering when I experienced none during the recording? Is there a solution here?

Around 12 years ago I used to use Fraps I think to record on screen footage in Flaming Cliffs... had no issue at all back then!

If it makes any difference my specs are:

4k screen 38" screen

Ryzen 9 3950X

Nvidia 2080 Super

64GB RAM

Cheers!

What disk do you have?

Your specs above should be ample to stream (I could stream 4k60fps with my 1080GTX even) without problem.

Try to stream to an SSD / M.2 drive.

My settings with new system are 4k 60FPS @ 80Mbps. to M.2 drive

For the old system, 1440p 60fps @ 50Mbps ... zero issues to SSD drive.

Now: Water-cooled Ryzen 5800X + 32GB DDR 4 3200 RAM + EVGA 3090 FTW3 Ultra 24 GB + Reverb G2 + Add-on PCI-e 3.1 card + 2x1TB Corsair M.2 4900/4200 + TM HOTAS Warthog + TM TPR Pendular Rudder  'Engaged Defensive' YouTube Channel

Modules: F/A-18C / AV-8B / F-16 / F-15E / F-4E (when it lands) / Persian Gulf / Syria / Nevada / Sinai / South Atlantic

Backup: Water-cooled i7 6700K @ 4.5GHz + 32GB DDR4 3200MHz + GTX 1080 8GB + 1TB M.2 1k drive & 250GB SSD drive 500MBps 4K 40" monitor + TrackIR 5

Well I'm not streaming. I'm just trying to record on screen gameplay to edit later.

I have an EVO 970 M.2 SSD.

Sorry yes, meant recording rather than streaming (or rather streaming video to disk!)

Run a speed check on your disk / update drivers / what are your settings in nVidia Share?

I did a comparison video for FPS here - amazed how good ShadowPlay is:

It's unfortunate that AMD CPUs do not have an integrated GPU. On Intel you can tell OBS to use Intel QuickSync (iGPU) to capture and your discrete GPU (2080 Super) remains in use for DCS exclusively. I use this method all the time and there are zero frame drops.

You could experiment with a secondary discrete GPU. Be mindful of what that does to the PCI channel allocation (check motherboard manual).

Someone above mentioned an external capture box / card - those work too - are effectively just a discrete GPU with fancy software from a VAR.

Ah so I may have figured something out - it's not the track that is f'ed up. It might be windows media player that makes it run slow.

What software do you guys use for playback of clips?
