New Bios for many Asus boards adds Resizable Bar, from Z370 to recent ones

Recommended Posts

In case you have a new AMD or Nvidia GPU that might give you an edge 😉

Asus issued like 30+ new Bios' for Z370 up to recent Boards. It actually adds Memory Remapping/Resizable Bar ( whatever they call it ) even to my aging Z370 board, while also giving me a hard time going back to 5G, so something else deep down also changed.

Asus does NOT list what they actually changed, just " System Stability bla bla "  and that's it.

I have not noticed any other new options in my Bios, heck, it's a 2017 board.

Fighting BSODs now when test benching it.....ahhhh,  I need a new system, it's just still fast enough....sigh

I cant do a bios upgrade on my GPU for some reason though. My RTX 3080 shipped with original, October vbios, but when I try to upgrade I get a message: "Your graphic card no need to upgrade."

It does not fix anything but allows a new feature.  Google it for deep explanation. It's memory related thing  GPU-VRAM+System-RAM

No, haha, it's a MAINBOARD Bios, not a GPU Bios. You look at the wrong end.

I'm sorry but you're wrong there buddy. I dont need motherboard bios upgrade, AMD chipsets were provided with support for Resizable Bar / SAM in December and I tried that on mine with AMD Radeon 6800 XT.

GPUs do require vbios upgrade. As stated by Nvidia themselves: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/geforce-rtx-30-series-resizable-bar-support/

Quote

For desktops to take advantage of Resizable BAR, users need a GeForce RTX 30 Series graphics card with a supported VBIOS, a compatible CPU, compatible motherboard, motherboard SBIOS update, and our newest GeForce Game Ready driver.

GeForce RTX 3060 desktop graphics cards launched February 25th, 2021 with a pre-installed Resizable BAR VBIOS. If you purchased one, all you need is a compatible motherboard and motherboard SBIOS, described above, and our newest Game Ready Driver.

GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, 3070, 3080 and 3090 desktop graphics cards may require a VBIOS update.

My RTX 3080 shipped in October and it still has original vbios. Any attempts to install new one failed so far unfortunately.

Ok, I see.

didn’t know you are on AMD chipset and thought you misunderstood the thread.

Have you tried other Forums, i.e. Guru3d.com or contacted Customer Support?  Pretty sure you are not the only one having that issue.

For clarity at present there is no z390 MB support for resizable bar at present for ASUS The last bios from ASUS z390 was in December and it did not include resizable bar support.

..Hoping @FoxTwo joins this thread, or anyone experienced with Nvidia profile inspector who knows how to use it to include specific "Unknown" flags into the DCS profile ?

3 flags have been identified in that list which are specific to the 17 apps that NVIDIA has currently identified as benefitting from resizable BAR and so included them in their game profiles in that latest game ready driver release. The understanding is that those flags must be set for an application to utilize the feature.

As it's unlikely that NVIDIA will get round to testing and including DCS any time soon, the theory is, if we use Nvidia profile inspector to add them to the DCS profile, we should be able to try it in DCS.

These are the 3 flags (as identified by @FoxTwo )

Screenshot 2021-03-30 172007.png

My ASUS x570 BIOS is enabled for Resizable BAR (didn't need a BIOS update), and I've flashed my 3090 with the tool ASUS provided yesterday so I'm good to go if someone can advise on the above ?

(Copying @imacken and @zildac from S-O-H's thread where we were discussing yesterday)

Thanks @ShaunX

I tried this briefly again this morning. Added the 3 flags listed above with the relevant values to my DCS Nvidia profile. I have to say I noticed no difference, but as previously mentioned I did have SteamVR reprojection enabled. And of course I am using VR (which may or may not have some relevance to the outcome). I'll disable reprojection, try again and report back.

Update:

So no noticeable difference enabled or disabled, for me at least.

Could you tell me how to add the flags please. I've never used Nvidia profile inspector before. Do I have to use the Bit Value Editor somehow ?

I just added the below values to the relevant unknown flags in my DCS profile and hit apply. I'm pretty sure that's all that is required. Copy the hex string, click the relevant entry and paste.

0x000F00BA - 0x00000001
0x000F00BB - 0x00000001
0x000F00FF - 0x0000000040000000

OK, so this is what I have.

I have no idea if I have done it correctly or not, but all I did was go to the DCS profile, click the 'show unknown settings' button, go to the 3 identified, click the dropdown showing the game names, .e.g. Battlefield V, and 'apply changes'.

As I say, I have no idea if this is correct.

Hmm, I note that mine says 0x00000008 for F0FF rather than zildac's value. If I try to put that one in, I get the attached error.  My value came from the one showing in Inspector itself.

there must be a way of showing if it is enabled or nor in a particular game.

That is odd. I did notice the difference in value, but not sure why it's throwing that exception.

As an aside, how do I back up the entire profile via Inspector?  Seems to just do individual titles.  Never used this tool before!

Interestingly, doing that shows this for DCS in the output file.  Looks like the edits have taken. But, it still leaves us with which value of f00ff is correct.

Ah OK, that's good news. And actually a handy way to back up profiles generally. Yeah, not really sure what the correct value is. As you say they are conflicting between those posts. If the value I used was correct then I saw no difference anyway, but the value could in fact be incorrect. Also I think the original test was done in 2D if that makes any odds.

I'm probably just being thick here, but still don't understand how you're applying those changes. I see this..

image.png

Are you saying I need to change the first 2 entries with 17 profiles to 0x00000001 and the last to 0x0000000040000000  ?

..but on mine, the last one is already 0x0000000040000000  as above. Shouldn't it perhaps be changed to 0x0000000140000000  ?

I have no idea what I'm doing here 😉

..sorry, I get it now, just select the entry in the dropdown for the 3rd profile and apply with the other 2 changes.

Well I've just tried it with an FPSVR comparison and I don't see any improvement in average FPS over the same period.

I guess the other point is that there's no way to confirm whether the settings changes were actually correct and therefore effective. And again, like Zildac I'm testing in VR with a G2 not 2D.

I am also using in VR (as well as monitor games).  I don't see why it should make a difference if it's VR or not. If it's working, it's working.

The problem here is - as you say - that we don't know if what we are doing is correct or not.

I'm going to do some tests now.
