How to reign in AI CAP

My AI CAP are going after hostiles 200 miles away, driving straight into SA10s and getting shot down. 

 

My CAP is for defensive purposes, more like BARCAP, I think? And I want them to only go after targets that get close to 50nm of the CAP zone, then return to the CAP route instead of chasing enemies or attacking other enemies 50nm of the fighters (as opposed to the CAP route).

 

Is there a way to do this?

Never use the default CAP task. Instead use Enroute Task "Search and Engage" with distance and target options or "Search and Engage in Zone". This will limit CAP to specific areas instead of letting them attack anything that they know exists.
