You can't use both FXAA and SMAA.  FXAA will override SMAA.

Update:

 

Seems to add around 1ms to my GPU Frametime (just sitting on Caucasus ready on the ramp) but looks better than FXAA to my old eyes.

Not as much but I am also getting better performance than FXAA.  About 0.2ms.  And does look better.

 

There are lots of filters to play with.  FakeHDR and LumaSharpen also nice visual improvement but debating whether the performance is worth it.  About 1ms on my system.  Maybe not as much on higher end systems.

 

Also played with depth based effects such as AO and SSR but anything to do with depth doesn't seem to be working in VR.  Maybe because VR is already using depth buffer.

Did you install the previous one I posted first?  This version allows other ReShade filters to work.

Fine here. Do you have a ReShadeUI.fxh in ./reshade-shaders/Shaders ?

 

Did you start with the OVGME ready archive Taz provided fuirther up?

Edit:  You need to install the Mod version I posted earlier before applying SMAA and other ReShade filters.

Personally, I didn't. Make sure FXAA is disabled in ReShade and enable SMAA. I left MSAA enabled in DCS.

Everyone need to find what works best for them.  It really depends on the system and headset.  But I am reading somewhere FXAA is better with MSAA and SMAA is better by itself but those opinions are also all over the place.  Great thing about ReShade is that you can see the change in real time so test and find out.  And share your findings.

FXAA (fast approximate) is not a very taxing AA algorithm but tends to cause smearing (detects hard edges and smooth them out), not ideal if you need to preserve fine detail such as tiny texts in cockpit.  SMAA (subpixel morphological) is a newer gen AA that can preserve fine detail better with less blurriness.  MSAA (muti-sampling) is an old standard and more GPU taxing than the other two, but can produce pretty good crisp images.

The effect of the SMAA preset in ReShade is very noticeable in the Game Menus.

Performance hit of SMAA seems directly related to amount of pixels it anti aliases.  And is tied to the sharpening radius setting of the sharpen filter.  Below is SMAA with debug filter.  And the circle in the middle is the sharpening radius (set to 0.4).  I exaggerated it to illustrate but basically, SMAA is doing far more anti aliasing inside that circle.  So bigger the radius, more work SMAA has to do.

 

Sharpening radius by itself didn't have big performance impact but coupled with SMAA (or FXAA), its performance characteristics is amplified.

 

So it's important to set that sharpen radius no larger than what you can see.

It may be a silly question but I can only see the SMAA effect on the in game menu text when I start in "VR OFF" mode via Skatezillas tool, if I run up DCS in regular VR mode then the SMAA effect on the menu text is not present in the HMD or in the mirror. Are we sure the SMAA preset is actually working in VR? Or am I missing something here.

i only ever see it in the 2d mirror , but its definitely there

Odd, I'll check again could be my eyes. Given it doesn't seem to affect the in game menus (in the HMD) that would suggest it's not actually working though would it not?

the menu option is definitely there for me when in VR, in the 2d mirror
Maybe I'm not explaining very well. . In 2D I can see the SMAA effect on the in game menus, the text is softened and rounded as you'd expect. However I don't see the same effect in the HMD with SMAA enabled. The reshade menu itself is absolutely fine in all scenarios.

in game with msaa turned off, check the edge of the canopy rail

You could lower your supersampling or resolution to better see if its working or not.  Also try with MSAA off if you have it on.

It's most obvious when you look at horizontal or vertical line, tilt head slightly, and toggle ReShade on/off with End key.

Also try turning on the SMAA debug mode like I did.

 

Real time preview doesn't work if you have ReShade Performance Mode enabled.  Even if you turn it off, you have to restart.  Enable Performance mode only when you're done tweaking.

Thanks both, I'll have a play. I guess I was expecting to see the same effect on the ingame menus text with SMAA enabled in 2D and in trhe HMD. I only see the text softening in 2D.

@Taz1004 sorry for being lazy but, what does performance mode do, makes it go faster I get, but why what's the trade off?

I've been testing this for quite a bit and don't really see any benefits of SMAA if MSAA is on.  MSAA 2x, I find, provides superior image quality with minimal shimmering at an acceptable performance cost on my PC.  So the only active shader I use right now is VR CAS.

It disables real time adjustments.  I get about 0.4-0.5ms extra.

Really... MSAA 2x is about 3ms higher than SMAA for me.
