Another New Build advice

Hey Guys, 

I know, I know. I've googled, read through the forums and watched tons of YouTube videos. I just want your advice to make sure I'm putting my money in the right places.  I do only 1080P and VR mostly in DCS and racing sims. Current rig is I7 6700k OC to 4.5Ghz, 16GB ram, Nvidia RTX 2070, Rift S.

New rig will be as follows. Any and all suggestions are most appreciated.  I could go with the RX 6800XT, but I'm not sure the extra cost would be worth it. Also what are your thoughts on the X570 boards vs the B550 boards?

I'd save £130 and go for the 5800X. I too was tempted by the 5900X but are those extra four cores really needed? Also, those 12 cores are shared across the same internal CPU memory controller as that in the 5800X...so a tad less bandwidth if they are all running at full chat. But check out the gaming benchmarks too - there is nothing in it with 5900x v 5800x. Elsewhere, go for the Corsair M.2 drive ... 5k read/4k write...cheaper too. Otherwise all looks great!

I would probably just go a 5600X if you wanted to save a bit without sacrificing much.

Where you would really be making a mistake though is "Secondary 2TB (2TBx1) Seagate SATA-III 6.0Gb/s 256MB Cache HDD". Don't get spinning disks, replace those with SSD. You wont have enough space for DCS and other games on your NVMe drive.

Thanks guys! Great recommendations. I failed to mention I'll be pulling my 5 SSDs out of my old PC and putting them in the new rig. I've got an old 3TB HDD in my current rig and was going to copy things I need to keep to the new 2TB drive. I'm thinking about buying  another 1TB NVMe drive and putting DCS there. The MB has 2 NVMe slots, probably the one C3PO suggested. 

 

Any opinion on the AMD RX 6800 XT VS the RTX 3080? I've got an NVIDIA Shield hooked to my TV and I would hate to loose the ability to stream other games from my new PC to the shield and was thinking about going with the RTX 3080.

Normally, VRAM is King but yes I could not live without nVidia Share anymore! 3080 with 10GB v 6800XT with 16GB ... tricky ...I'd err more towards nVidia ...

One of the things to remember in 6800xt vs 3080. The 3080 uses GDDR6X memory so its faster. The 16gb is tempting for sure.

 

I currently use a 2080ti so 11gb memory. I play DCS using a 4k TV using high/ultra settings with 2x MSAA. I havn't run out of Vram yet even on the Syria map. 

 

I know if I could get one I have money waiting to buy a MSI 3080 Suprim X, however I wont pay over a grand for it when I have a 2080ti running perfectly.

 

As for a CPU I use a 5600x, never max it out in DCS. I now finally have a set of G Skill 3200mhz C14 DDR4, that made a difference having C14 instead of C16. Really super smooth performance now. Well worth it.

Would the C14 make a difference in a intel as well? was it a measurable or visual diffence? I would like to get upgrade Memory but for 32GB it is 259Bucks Would it be worth that for the price?

Yes.  The Syria map consumes around 28gb of RAM on my 32GB system.  32gb of RAM and at least 11GB of VRAM is pretty future proof for now.

Ok my DCS experience was very smooth at 4k 60fps with Track IR 5 using C16 ddr4. However in a heavily populated area like Dubai or just going over the trees landing at Khasab. Flying very low over Syria. There was an occasional random micro stutter when looking around quickly. Fitting C14 DDR4 reduced this a lot, I mean a lot. For example lining up on a busy Super carrier is now completely smooth, proper butter smooth. I was desperate to buy a 3080 convinced it would improve my DCS experience. I can't see the point since fitting C14. I would say it's well worth the money. Having my DDR4 in a 4x8gb config at C14 transformed my PC's performance.

As for Intel, I haven't used Intel since my 9900k in 2019. I can't think of a reason why Intel would not benefit from having C14 over C16.

My 2080ti using high textures in Syria uses about 9.5gb vram and 24gb dram.

I have been wondering lately if the speed of the RAM and VRAM have an impact during swapping.  Radeon has that cool memory architecture so DDR6 may not be such a factor.  His 2080Ti memory speed is about 40% higher than my 1080Ti.  Lots of variables.

I had a 6800xt briefly. It worked for about a week before developing a fault and being returned for a refund. The 6800xt would use up to 14gb of Vram over Syria. My 2080ti uses 9.5gb. Both ran it at 60fps on high settings. 

I cant say if it was the fault the 6800xt had or not. I never got another one to test it fully. My 2080ti coped better maintaining 60fps down low in populated areas with lots of buildings. The 6800xt could not cope so well to be honest. However I put that down to under developed drivers and the black screen idle power issue it developed after a week of using it. 

 

To Nephilim, I was running 3200mhz c16 ddr4. However I came upon the G Skill C14 kit I originally wanted at a very reasonable price used. If your not having an issue then stick with what you have. I'm glad I upgraded though, smoothed out the small stutter scenarios I had left. I was surprised at the difference it made. I saw the same thing in Sturmovik too. That quick look around micro stutter, gone.

Yes I had the same memory. I bought the Cas14 and I will see for myself what it does.. this way I will know what memory to get in the future.. I do notice stutters in Dubai in VR so maybe this will be the remedy..

I dont notice much difference regarding the memories actual speed past 2400mhz. I run it at 3200mhz simply because I can. It was going from 2x16gb stick to 4x8gb sticks and then the timing being C14 instead of C16 that seemed to make a difference.
