HP Reverb G2 vs Oculus Rift S

Hey guys,

I am going to upgrade my peripherals and I decided to get VR. My PC is comparably weak and will therefore have trouble running the G2 at native resolution but since I am also going to upgrade my PC in the next couple of years, I was thinking about getting the G2 anyway instead of having to upgrade the HMD as well. My question now is can I achieve similar performance to the Rift S with the G2 running at lower resolutions?

My specs are:

i5 10600k@4.80GHz

GTX 1070ti (8GB VRAM)

16GB 2667 MHz

M.2 SSD

Hello there, I've got a G2 and I ran it for a short time on a 1080, which is somewhat comparable to a 1070ti, and I was not too disappointed in the performance I was getting. That said, you can just scale down the resolution that you are running the headset at if you need more performance. I didn't feel like I needed to do that when I was running it on my 1080. I've got a 3080 now and to be honest I did not notice a massive performance jump. DCS is mostly held back by CPU performance and RAM from what I understand.

On a 1070ti, you will have to significantly compromise your settings in order to tun dcs acceptably ...

My understanding is that the two things that make a difference at the moment given DCS runs primarily on a single core are the CPU Speed and the amount of VRAM on the Graphics card.  an i3 overclocked to 5.0 will have better performance than an i9 at 3.7.  The VRAM I believe is more about pagetime which effects the ability to get 90FPS rather than 45FPS. From other threads though I agree the minimum card to really enjoy DCS is a 2080super/3060ti but you really want a 3080 to really enjoy it.

I got a 3080 and I dont really enjoy the performance 😅. So your milage may vary. 😉

DCS doesn't scale well. A way better gfx card only gives a little better experience. I have run a Rift S and a G2 on my 1070 and the G2 was far far better then the Rift S. Even if you turned the G2 res down to match the Rift S the screens are better in other aspects as well.

Eventually I upgraded my 1070 to an amd 6800 but only got a minor improvement.

We have pretty much the same system, what clock speed are you running the CPU? That made all the difference for me.

Still running stock. The stock normally stays between 4.8 and 5.1.

So you telling me that at fixed 5.0GHz you have s buttersmooth experience? No sudden dropped frames?

Last I used the G2 was in January. Might have to give this a try this weekend.

I leaved the rift S for a G2. It's another world, I have a 3070 btw. But I read several person that can use a G2 with a 1070 or 1080, with some compromise but is doable. Rift S is old, maybe you can take a Quest 2
