Phantom,

Draken,

first MiG-25P without look down radar became operational at the very end of 1960s so this one for sure

And at this moment I realized I would take any plane from this era, F-105, A-5, A-6, F-8, A-7, MiG-23, Su-7, Mirage III, Tu-22, B-58, F-111...

MiG-21F-13 - it's so pretty. Su-7, Phantom obviously, MiG-23 obviously. I'm on the fence when it comes to the MiG-25, all versions of it were very specialised, but at the same time effective in their little niches.

MiG-25 was pretty much used as a usual fighter. And effectively

Oh, absolutely, it is very much underrated as a fighter. Thing is, the P/PD variant could do pretty much only A-A. The recon/bomber variants on the other hand weren't good at it at all, and quite limited in their selection and weight of A-G ordnance.

So this is the thread I should have posted the F-102A, F-106A. Didn't notice the Korean War tag there.

Also MiG-25. That plane would be nice to have in order to "jump" over the opposition and blow up their Awacs with 4xR-40s jump over them again and land to get more R-40s. Might be risky in case of an opposing F-15 amraam carrier on the way. But still it would be an enjoyable enterprise.

Then of course Draken, finnish forest dwelling variant naturally.

Can't forget the choppers.

We need an F-5A with a complimenting CF-5A/ refueling probe complimenting it.

The aircraft was prevalent on every continent, so it makes sense.

How about a F-5C it was an A with a USAF refueling receptacle

Sounds superficial. The F-5C was given a a2a refueling probe and modifications to fight corrosion. It was only used in South Vietnam.

I think you could use the F-5A to cover the -C as a supplement. But a dedicated -C would be pointless as it robs the biggest advantage the F-5A has going for it: it was used by so many countries, but the -C was not.

I was thinking both in the same module, since I was under the impression the fuel probe was the only difference.

Su-24MK

He asked about "Mid-Cold War / Viet Nam era planes (1955 -1975)"

"Su-24MK" entered production in 1988, 2 years before the end of the Cold War.

First basic variant Su-24 with "Puma" navigation system, "Orbita" computer and shorter fuselage entered service in 1975 after official trials.

That being said I would love to have Su-24M from late Cold War 1980s when it's mission was all weather low level penetration strike against NATO targets and forces in East Germany. Just Like Tornado IDS and F-111F for NATO.

In those days this kind of aircrafts still had their very important place and low level strike was considered dangerous yet still possible.

I am all about that F105. Any version is fun, D for that Vietnam canyon run feeling, hauling 6000lbs of bombs to a target. G for that old school weaselin, though most of the fun stuff in that version is probably classified still. But I just like those low level, fast bombers. So Aardvarks or Fencers are also good in my book.

  • F-4 Phantom II (namely M, S, E, K)
  • Harrier GR.3 (FRS.1 is just slightly too late, and if GR.3 is too late then the GR.1A)
  • F-104G Starfighter
  • MiG-23M
  • J 35F/D
  • A 32A/J 32
  • MiG-21bis
  • Tu-16 (as AI; preferably the initial basic bomber variant (Badger A), dedicated maritime strike (Tu-16K-10-26 'Badger C Mod.') and combined w/out RADAR (Tu-16KSR-2-5-11 'Badger G Mod.')
