Yeah, not being official doesn't mean much at this point, either positively or negatively.

There are examples like Gazelle and MiG-19 which started out as user mods and eventually released as modules. There are also mods like A-4E and MB-339 which are challenging paid module level, and the Macchi is becoming one as well.

But yes, there are also many that have simply failed. Looking at the website don't know if they have what it takes to make it a reality, but I'd welcome it happily if they can. The more the merrier. Especially those that want to make Red or at least Euro birds, and more so the oldie birds. I'd love to see them succeed.

A Mod, no a official 3rd party module.

Its not an official third party yet but their stated goal is to sell it as a full module and not just release it as a mod.

I really hope they are able to, its such a historically important aircraft. I'll definitely buy it.

It seems that the mod part will be for alpha testing and demonstration only. They're going to make it a full module. I do like the idea, but I'd prefer to have some more assets around the era. Otherwise, MiG-19 is the earliest I'm going to go, and even that one I bought only due to its very high quality campaign. MiG-17 gave the Phantoms in 'Nam a hard time, but with no Phantom on the horizon, all it'd have to fight is that horrible, ancient AI model. All I can hope for is that the AI FM doesn't cheat as much as the -15 does.

The interest has about have a "offical" 3rd party more. Has better to have acess to SDK, build official modules, more assets and in a future build maps with the TDK.

As I understand, the F-4 that's in the pipeline is a post-Vietnam era F-4E which had some additional capabilities and improvements over the F-4B, C and D variants that would have faced off against the 17.

ED recently appear to have scrubbed that one. Still, I would expect MiG-17 to do just fine against it. It was very much still around in the 80s, especially (but not only) in 3rd world.

The model show on the webside, coming from pics on Turbosquid....
https://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/mig-17f-fighter-3d-model/1053933

The problem has...... A team need probe to have capability to build and make quality work to reach 3rd party status, not purchase a 3D model and claim someone.

Ok, so maybe it doesn't work out. But how about some encouragement instead of negativity? DCS needs more third parties. This can only be a good thing if it works and it doesn't matter if it fails.

That is not negativity, has "fair play". A team need know all DCS developing process, include model, texture, animations and build all elements on your assets, and show proveed capabilities to get a concise project to ED to reach 3rd Party status.

Fingers crossed for this project. I hope it won't be dead a few months after the idea like many "mods" idea. For me it could be payware for sure with EFM and good 3D modelling of shape and systems.

How do you know they're not the ones selling the model on Turbosquid? 🙂 If I wanted to start my own company and had no idea where to find a modeler, the first thing I'd do would be to find someone who makes pretty plane models like that and see if they're available. And even if they just bought the model, that's fine, too, as long as it's usable and makes the cut quality wise (the artist could be even commissioned to made damage textures and such). That said, in my experience, trying that just ends in remodeling the thing from scratch anyway, after it turns out that the model designed to look good in a 3D program has issues that make it not work too well in a sim.

20 thousand polygons are not enough by today's standards. This was done 20 years ago.

Actual "poligon count" on DCS modules and AI.... (only external models, no cockpits).

The team need "raise" the detail if like reach the "bar" on actual modules. In the TS page, the 3D model has not recent, was build with 3DS Max 2012 and Mental Ray, and posted on Jul 12, 2016 (near 6 years ago).

About "TurboSquid 3D" models, some long time ago (5-6 years) I was on a team with like reach the 3rd party statuts, that purchase first a TS 3D model, and need redone them by some problems with mesh, animations and texture when intent convert them to work on DCS World EDM plugin. Has better build them from scratch.

Look at it that way: at least they have something to test the SFM with. Although, I wouldn't put that sort of thing in advertising, but they might not know yet that high-poly WIP pics are actually more enticing to this community than pretty, but not actually usable models. 🙂
