Crash when dropping GBU-12 from F/A-18C

Today I was doing some F-18 training with a friend. I was flying about 100ft off his wing each time. He'd set up for an AUTO drop, run in on the target, and the moment he pressed the pickle button his sim would freeze completely, requiring tabbing out and killing the process in task manager. From my point of view his plane would suddenly stop in mid-air, and hang there for a couple of minutes until he'd killed the process and disappeared from the server.

 

I tried to reproduce the problem by making the same attack myself, but had no issues at all. This happened over and over again after he restarted DCS. I I got him to run a repair on his DCS installation and that didn't fix the problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi. I have a few ideas in my head, but I think his log would be a good start. Please attach his dcs.log and his most recent dcs.log-202101##-######.zip file ( both are located in C:\Users\your-name\Saved Games\DCS...\Logs\ ).

 

By the way, has he tried to rename his "Saved Games\DCS" folder yet? Be advised his DCS will then start with default settings and default controls. He then must try to reproduce his issue.

Watching closely.  I was trying to release (in MP with friend) a GBU-12 in CCIP mode as I forgot to load a Targeting Pod.  As soon as I pickled, the screen froze.  DCS never crashed but was in "waiting" state.  Did an Alt...Ctrl...Delete to close DCS.  Myself and flight mate were flying in VR.

That sounds identical to what happened to us, Drac.

 

Flappie, thanks for the response. It might take a day or 3 to get his logs for you, but I'll have a go. He's not terribly savvy when it comes to tracking down files like that, so when I see him again I'll try to walk him through it.

Hi Flappie! Managed to get hold of him this evening. I've attached the log files you asked for. I hope they're the right ones. The date on the most recent dcs.log-20xxxxx file seems to suggest that it was created before the errors cropped up, but I've double-checked and it is the most recent one he has.

 

I've also told him to rename his "saved games/dcs" folder and asked him to try to reproduce the issue. I'll update once he gets back to me with the results of his testing.

Thanks. The dcs.log file doesn't show any crash.

The zip shows a "DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED" crash, which doesn't seem to be related to a bomb pickle (the error sprung 50 seconds before the final crash).

 

Here are a few solutions that worked against the "ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED" symptoms:

  1. Cause: faulty PSU
  2. Cause: SSLR enabled
  3. Cause: overclocked GPU
  4. Cause: RAM overclocked
  5. Solution: slightly downclocked GPU
  6. Solution: check for absence of dust and/or GPU well placed in its slot

Hi Flappie, and thanks for the info. I'll pass it along to him. I don't think there's much chance of overclocking being the issue, as he's using an off-the-shelf laptop and isn't the type to go tinkering with things under the hood. I had to help him with opening a file explorer window. LOL

 

We'll see if the problem presents itself again and if so continue to try to troubleshoot. Thanks for your help. 🙂

We have been seeing a game freeze / crash to desktop behaviour when releasing laser guided bombs (GBU-10 and GBU-12).

 

Attached is a track and a tacview file showing two aircraft freezing within a short amount of time from one another, directly as a result of pickling their LGBs. The moment happens at 07:10 local time (04:10 zulu) and 07:16 local (04:16z). Pilots involved 'CSG-3 | Kung Fu | 210' and 'CSG-3 | Tex | 201' :

Hi @Drac. Your log doesn't show the freeze you've experienced. Do you happen to have the right log file? Try attaching dcs.log.old (unless you've launched DCS after your latest post).

I see DCS only detects a 5 GB pagefile. This could be the source of your issue, but before asking you to change anything in your PC, I'd like to see the hang-up log.

I don't see any symptoms of a freeze building up (I'm talking about sounds taking time to be processed, or textures failing to decompress) which means your hang-up was most probably "triggered". Maybe a bug rather than a hardware issue, but since there's no symptoms I can only guess.

 

I see you haven't updated your OB to the latest version yet. Since it's suppsoed to fix a few crashes, you should give it a go.

Roger.  I will be hosting this mission again Wednesday with my flight mates.  When I pickled, the "monitor/TV icon came up saying waiting".  I fly in VR.

Hi all, 

I have the exact same issue: the moment I press the pickle button for GBU-12 delivery ---> complete sim freeze and the only way to get out is by killing DCS in the task manager. I am running the stable version.

@FlappieI wanted to provide the files you asked for here above, but I can't see any dcs.log-202101##-######.zip file in my log folder ???

Hi @pcoud. The absence of a ZIP file indicates this bug doesn't crash the game, it freezes it (the game is not failing from its perspective, it's probably waiting for something to happen). Thanks for your feedabck and log. Just like in Drac's log, there's not much to see.

 

I've just discovered this bug has another thread, and it's under ED investigation. I propose we resume discussion here.
