"Wee Speck" 354thFG, 355thFS plus Generic

Continuing my foray into the 354th Fighter Groups brief dalliance with the P-47 Thunderbolt (the 9th Air Force is one of my main area's of interest in the ETO), here's "Wee Speck" flown by Capt Lowell K. "Brue" Brueland of the 355th Fighter Squadron.

Brueland ended the war with 12.5 victories, however they were all achieved in the P-51 Mustang.

The 355th employed a "dropping bomb" art on a light blue and white cowl design as the squadron colours.

Although no two "bombs" were exactly the same, it appears that the "bomb art" on "Wee Speck" differed more than most in colour and character.

I have used this black and white photo of the art as my reference in attempting to replicate it. As can be seen it is obviously not a plain black.

Some sources have postulated that the main colour of the design is grey. However this does not make much sense to me, as green would have been a paint colour easily to hand, plus the bombs they carried were green. So I have painted mine an OD green colour. The crest appears to be a dark red, but the bottom of the design is more of a mystery, as to both what it represents and its colour.

Whatever it is supposed to be, I have replicated it in black but I may well be wrong.

I have also completed a partially coded "Generic" skin for wingmen using the more commonly known "bomb" art.

Both up at User Files.
