Are you running with Motion Smoothing on for DCS?
I run with it on and set to Auto.  I will do cold start and take off from the Supercarrier in the Hornet, then buzz low over water and land for a bit, and it is very smooth for me. I think as long as I can maintain the 45 fps for Motion Smoothing it does pretty good for me.

I find there is too much shimmer without MSAA.

But I will try your settings for sure and without MSAA but for me.... switching off flat shadows gave me 2X MSAA.

Yea it’s often a choice between the two...

No motion smoothing, for me it is plaster over the cracks.

Better to get plenty of headroom above 45 fps.

Ok yeah that would explain the stutters then.

Both ways have their trade offs and neither is perfect. I prefer higher graphics settings with motion smoothing on as long as I can maintain reprojection rate at 45 fps. To me the graphic artifacts are not so bad it affects my enjoyment.

Others would be more sensitive to it though and prefer not running Motion Smoothing but then have the stutters at times.

To each their own... but I have had frames above 45 and had stuttering without motion smoothing .. it’s not perfect but again it’s about what compromise you need to make for you..

Either 90 or 45 will give perfect fluid images.

I think VR does not work well with anything outside its refresh rate or half its refresh rate or even a fixed custom rate (60).

Anything outside these fixed points (45, 60, 90) is very noticeable.

Why oh why they did not include some sort of advanced dynamic frame rate is just beyond me.

Yes that’s what motion smoothing  is for...locking you at either 45 or 90... so confused as to how you achieve it without it...

Of the top of my head, you mean re projection permanently locked at 45?

Smoothing is different... I am probably on the wrong page here.... VR stuffs changes so fast.

I should also note that I have a PC that has only DCS on it.... nothing else. DCS needs it then its loaded, DCS don't need it then it ain't loaded. so no Steam sub menus for me.

look here and read, if your are still manually editing Vr settings, you are just wrong you should be using this https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/mixed-reality/enthusiast-guide/using-steamvr-with-windows-mixed-reality.

What GPU frametime you usually get with SS100%? (depending DCS ingame settings of course). SS100% looks amazing and quite playable frametime with my setup (14-18ms) but maybe too much for 3080 without headroom.

I get about 11.9 to 12.8 which is what convinced me to go to 80% SS, I basically stepped it down until, I achieved two things, I’m generic free flight, more in 90 than in 45, and on the super carrier more in 45 on the deck without dipping below 45 on approach.

the clarity is still very good at 80 or even 70, but clarity is a very personal thing... and I used to think that 2160x2160 was clear on my old g1 with a 1080ti... go figure.

I decided to try out your settings and they do seem to help, but aircraft spotting seems to have suffered a bit.  I used to fly with the smeared labels mod, dot only, but since getting the new system and the G2, I've been trying to fly with no labels and doing fairly well at it.

I wonder if it has anything to do with your shadows mod... I'll try turning that off.

I don't think the shadows mod has anything to do with it.  Probably a combination of AF and visibility distance (I usually fly with Ultra).

I haven't flown that campaign yet (been playing DCS Liberation), but my visibility test is the Ground Attack Practice mission for the Hornet in Syria.  Shortly after the mission starts, four Vipers take off from Incirlik.  I've been able to pick them up at 17 miles.

I think I've got my visibility good.  But I'm convinced that the Syria map badly needs optimization, because it seems no matter what area I'm flying over, FPS is around 20 less than the other maps.  I may just start a Liberation campaign in another theater instead.

That Ground Attack Practice mission starts out at around 55 fps, for example.

SoH, please can you clarify the reg edit procedure for the process priority tweak? Thx!

Also, intrigued as to the effect of changing the per app percentage for DCS, it does not seem to have much effect for me? General setting , yes absolutely, but I tried setting DCS at 200 the other day and could not notice much of an effect on either performance or quality.....I have it at 100 and just tweak the main setting.

System specs: Scan 3XS i9 9900K @5ghz, 32GB Corsair veng DDR4 2666, EVGA GTX 2080ti Win 10. Reverb G2 , 50 inch 4K Phillips monitor. Cougar throttle & TUSBA, plus ICP for the Viper. MFG crosswind rudders. Jet seat and butt kicker..

VR Settings: 90% (90 & 100 ), motion re projection locked 45 FPS, MSAA x2, shadows off, water med, terrain low, draw distance med, no aniso. DCS PD =1.    15ms GPU frame time & super smooth....looks great too.

Hey Mark,

i updated the original post for perf priority, it shouldn’t make much difference to total perf, but, it should provide less cpu ‘variation’ with background processes occasional trying to grab a slice of time. In terms of perf improvement, if I turn HPET on i can pretty much reduce my perf in CPU by a 1/3...

you will need to reboot it to have any impact,  you can check the process priority in task manager.

not quite sure which setting you are talking about, I think you mean super sampling? Not sure what you mean by app setting either again I assume it’s application specific settings for super sampling.  But I don’t recommend either of those at 200?

if it is super sampling, then a lot depends on your other settings, but, I would absolutely be able to tell the difference between 200 and 100 in terms of perf... how are you measuring it? Because  you will be pushing a 6000 x 6000 pixel problem at 200...

Hi buddy, yes, talking about the super sampling. Steam VR general setting is the one that does all the work it appears. I found that with changing nothing else, changing up the DCS app specific slider does not seem to have much effect, compared to moving the general slider.......

Try simply setting the DCS slider to something like 150 or 200% and see if you notice much difference. ...... Another final thing I noticed is that sometimes, the in VR display you get using the system button on the controller, will report the resolution and SS % age differently to what you have set in the usual desktop steam VR settings menu.......no idea why, but would be interesting to see if anyone else has this.......unfortunately, I can’t figure out how to screenshot what I see through the goggles.......
