Looking for image quality, and fluid and low latency head movement in the cockpit. The G2 sounds interesting without that awful screen effect .... my only experience of VR is with the Oculus Rift pre-production model in 2015 - and the screen door effect was very noticeable.

Let me be frank, on your hardware you will have a compromised but very playable experience on the Reverb you will need to either down sample (which is still very playable)  or compromise on some settings, my 1080ti settings are below, i suspect you will be both CPU & GPU bottlenecked, your RAM Is also low, your spec will play 2d fine...

then that should be fine 🙂  you might want 32gb of RAM while you are at it though

I´d say for sims like DCS it would be the Reverb G2 or Pimax 8KX. Both have their advantages...do your research or try both.

Yes, something like that.

I have the Reverb G1 since one year and recentrly got the 8KX.  The 8KX is king if you can drive it, in DCS this takes about what you have.

( I have a i9 9900KS at 5.2Ghz, 32GB RAM, ASUS Strix RTX3090 OC).

DCS works fine but there isnt very much of margin to always have a smooth ride. Ohter games, no problem at all. Racing games, Half life alyx work flawless.

The 8KX have a quite narrow focal distance for your eye. If you cannot see sharp with your own eyes on about 0,75M or 2foot, you might need glasses to se sharp in the 8KX.  I need glasses in the 8KX despite 20/20 visuals(25/20 actually) an no need for glasses IRL except reading glasses. In Reverv Pro, Oculus Rift/Rift S I do not need any glasses so these lenses are quite different than most other VR sets. If you can accept glasses or dont need them = 8kx is king.

[T.M HOTAS Warthog Stick & Throttle + T.Flight pedals, Varjo Aero, HP Reverb pro, Pimax 8KX] 🙂

[DCS Mirage 2K; Huey; Spitfire Mk IX, AJS 37, F-14, F-18, FC3, A-10 Warthog II and a few more ]

As speed-of-heat already said, it's personal preference.  There's no best at everything.  I used to run with higher super sampling for clarity but now I lower it to run at smoother frame rate which I much prefer.

Best picture quality:  Reverb G2 or Pimax.

Best refresh rate:  Valve Index.

Best bang for your buck:  Oculus Quest 2

Well. The G2 is available, even in Switzerland, if you preordered it. I assume after new year it should start beeing available for normal orders at retailers.

G2 sounds great on resolution, etc though if I had no limit and wanted to jump before Christmas,  I'd probably go Pimax 8kx for the greater FOV.

For now I'm content with the Odyssey+. I'm sure I would appreciate a G2 though I don't preorder and hoping for Index 2 or a new entry for Samsung with G2 resolution and greater FOV in 2021.

I'll be building a new computer for my wife in the next year and will hand the Odyssey down to that one to be a RIO and/ or pilot and/or wingman.

Specs & Wishlist:

Core i9 9900k 5.0Ghz, Asus ROG Maximus XI Hero, 64GB G.Skill Trident 3600, Asus RoG Strix 3090 OC, 2TB x Samsung Evo 970 M.2 boot. Samsung Evo 860 storage, Coolermaster H500M, ML360R AIO

HP Reverb G2, Samsung Odyssey+ WMR; VKB Gunfighter 2, MCG Pro; Virpil T-50CM v3; Slaw RX Viper v2

If you have a larger FOV you need a larger resolution as you start to get SDE, as you physically space the pixels out...

I have:

Rift CV1

Rift S

Quest

Reverb G2.

Reverb G2 is now my main headset. Certainly the best image quality I have seen to date in a VR headset.

I probably would also have a Quest 2, but I did not care for how Oculus is forcing the tie in with a Facebook account to use the headset.

So I passed on Oculus for the first time. Have already deleted most my Oculus game library.

Thanks for all the advice: I use the standalone version of DCS: World - but have Steam for other games. Can I still use the G2 with DCS then without the Steam version of DCS?

A bit OT: but have a slight problem with my current triple screen setup (the rig that is contained in my signature). When I pan around the cockpit, the two side screens are very lagging and are not keeping up with the rate of panning of the middle screen. FPS seems good at around 60 in free flight so it is not a frame-rate issue. I'm using nVidia surround. and 460 drivers (the latest nVidia drivers have broken surround for me).

I'd start a separate Thread m8; Merry Christmas, you might want to check the monitor refersh rate is the same for each screen in display settings -> advanced display settings
