"3 running in" , "3 ejecting"

Recommended Posts

First off, I love the atmosphere and approach of the campaign. I was originally skeptical about a 50s Korea campaign on the default map and the amount of suspension of disbelief that would be required, but it's rather easy to transform the area in to the west coast of the Korean peninsula in the mind's eye.

Quick question:

In mission #1, my fellow roosters seem unpracticed in the art of strafing. I used the F10 option to have them attack ground targets. The bomb runs on the red smoke seemed to go okay, but after gun runs were asked for, I watched a wingman's run as he called "running in", then quickly followed it with "ejecting", he popped out and his sabre exploded below him. I didn't witness more of such behaviour because I was looking after my own plane , but after the controller said we could RTB, I told Roosters to form up and there was only myself and two aircraft from the other flight left to RTB.

Did I goof up on some instructions, or is there some way to prevent them from flying straight into the ground like that?

Cheers

Hi Wowbagger. Thanks a lot for the feedback. I just realized what it could be...

If you tell the AI to attack ground targets, it will prioritize AAA. There is a flak battery nearby, so the AI probably went there to attack. Now, due to a new bug, flak is absolutely DEADLY now. Impossible to survive. So the AI flew there and got killed. I reported it to ED, hoping for a quick solution.

It's best if you use the 'Attack primary' command. Both in the F10 menu, and the DCS built in menu. That way they'll attack the target they were supposed to, not the one they fancy.

Could this be it? The new flak bug is giving me a lot of headache, I'm hoping for a quick fix from ED.

Oh, that sounds likely. At one point I was surprised at how far away the flight was from the target, but I assumed they were setting up for their run in. I'll try using 'Attack Primary'from now on (I'm not really well versed in controlling the AI wingmen of DCS I'm afraid - I'm sure there are dozens of tips and tricks I need to learn).

Although I did watch my own #3 crash into the red smoked target, so maybe there was a combination of things going on there. I will rerun msn #1 and try your suggestion to see what the outcome is.

The ironic thing is that I decided to wait on launching into The Big Show and concentrate instead on Hunters because of the new DM stutter and flak bugs, totally forgetting that they share some of the same assets.

Thanks for the speedy help! Hope ED gets the warbirds and assets sorted toute suite. The work of a DCS campaign maker is never finished. I feel for you guys - but greatly appreciated all your effort.

Thanks a lot, and let me know the outcome of the re-run. I expect the AI can also be stupid when running in among mountains.

It was a good idea to choose the Sabre campaign, you'll have a much higher chance of survival in a fast Sabre - but later you'll escort Mustangs, so I expect those will be wiped out until it's fixed.

I tried the mission again using the F10 "Attack Primary" command and it turned out much better. No one crashed into the target and all were able to RTB. The only issue was, while Blue flight dropped all their bombs on target, my own Red Flight just flew around without attacking. I tried using the regular radio comms to order them to 'Attack Primary Target and rejoin as well but to no effect. Also I was the only one to do a gun run, even after using the "Attack Primary" a second time.

Just to check, should using the F10 orders apply to the entire formation or only Blue Flight, - requiring the regular comms to control Red Flight?

But none of that really affected the great atmosphere or the enjoyment of the mission very much. Love flying to the target with two flights in close formation leaving lovely contrails in the frigid air. After parking I stuck around to watch the rest of the formation land in tandem pairs. Great stuff.

Thanks for checking back. F10 is for everyone except your flight (in this mission: blue flight, but later there will be more). You still need to use the built in menu for your own. Not sure why yours didn't attack. I just checked again and they did for me. Were you on the right radio channel?

Looking forward to hearing about your experience with the rest of the campaign, as well as more screenshots :)
