Fw 190 D-9 Dora Engine Bug

Your case different,  my engine died suddenly w/o warning at cruise power setting.

Did you retard throttle or use switch to disengage mw50 ??

 I noticed that your engine seized during a loop maneuver.. this is also what I reported a few times. It seems that there's a fuel pressure issue.. if you pause the video @0:28 then play it, you'll notice that the fuel pressure drops, the engine dies and then the fuel pressure rises again..

Good catch, fuel pressure drop at very high power settings is very dangerous for engine. Pistons will not get enough cooling and they expanding rapidly, this may end up in quick engine seizure.

Why fuel pressure drops, probably on the top of the loop you need to pull stick harder to avoid neutral g.

I watched this clip again it seem that fuel pressure dropped after engine experienced catastrophic failure.

Just before engine death, fuel pressure raised up a bit, it could be effect of turning off mw50.

Is it 'normal' behavior? I know that Dora has engine driven fuel pumps and an additional booster pump for each tank.

Thats true was not able to loop 2 Times without Engine sizure, but since last Patch is gone...tryed no serval Times the Normandy Dogfight Mission and the Engine was holding pretty well together...but thats is not enough Testing that randomly Dora Engine failures now complete gone...was not flying to mutch Dora in the past...

Still there, after 33 Mins the Engine Quit. Normandy Dogfight Mission after Fighting the P-51 simple flying around.

 

Replay checked, should be working but the File is to big to share here...

I'd need to see a track of this, I can loop the Dora a number of times with no issues.

Hey as said was two Patches before end of December i asume, where the Engine was after 2 Loops gone. The Fuel Pressure is now stable again works fine your Ninja Fix, but the Random Engine Size as in my Track was before the Fuel Pressure Drop thing and is still Present. Two different things to clarify.

I actually finally had the issue, although I cant say what caused it, I didnt see anything out of the ordinary, I did fly poorly, I made a number of quick altitude changes to go back and forth to go from high and low blower, but nothing seems to phase it, it was only after all that, some time of just normal flight it just died of timing failure. So I will report with my track and see what the team thinks, thanks all.

Thanks for your work, sometimes it is hard to track issue.

I was finally able to complete a sorti in multiplayer, flight time was 45 minutes, from a full internal tank 80 liters remained at landing. I was able to avoid engine failure by running the engine continuously at or above 3100rpm. In other words I spent the whole flight other than approach and landing above the continuous limitations described on page 111 of the DCS Dora's manual. There were no issues with temperatures, pressure, performance throughout the flight.

 

Everytime I've taken the dora up and tried to cruise at lower power settings I've had a "clang" type sudden engine failure at seemingly random times, like 20-40 minutes into flight. That had happened on a flight I tried earlier today. These problems only appeared for me fairly recently, maybe early November.

Nice experiment, Rolds. Did the same on-line, well above 3100 rpm from take-off up to cruise at nearly 6000 to 7500 m for ca. 25 min. Disturbing to hear the engine running that high all the time. But no problems at all. Last 10 - 15 min chasing a P-47 high-up and all-out with 100 % throttle above 1.5 ATA - engine still happy. Came down more or less like a sail-plane with the very last drop of fuel. Problem of that engine-modelling seems to be even short times of "under-load" below 3000 rpm.

What setting exactly, I used 2100 for an entire fuel load and saw no issue.

Maximum engine-load test tonight: instant action Channel map -> Cold Start -> added 300 l drop tank -> take-off. From that moment on non-stop 100 % throttle, never touched it again during the flight. Several times up to 7000 m (ca. 1.7 ata) and down below 3000 m (ca. 1.5 ata), very few minimal cooler adjustments to stay a trifle below 100 degree C.
75 min later plane was out of fuel, engine ran smooth all the time. Ca. 820 l fuel for 75 min is ca. 660 l / h, within 10% of the 600 l / h given in the DCS-D9-manual.

Track-file is available (27 MB), TacView, too.

PS: Looking at the telemetry-data in TacView the fuel-consumption of my D-9 sometimes shows strange values. Maybe worth to check it.

My first post here. Sorry for the inconvenience.

 

This sums up my experience with the Dora in these last two months. This has led me to run the engine almost constantly at 3000 rpm to avoid stalls.

I also fly the Dora above continuous limits constantly and do not get the failures.. it  just drinks the fuel really fast!
I suspect that ED have a value inverted somewhere. Flying within the limits breaks the aircraft, flying outside the limits is problem free.

It's probably as simple as a "-" or a 1/n some where that is missing in the code. . .  damned near impossible to find though!
