Finding Targets With The TGP

Recommended Posts

I'm just getting into the Hornet. I am having an extremely difficult time finding targets with the TGP alone. I think it's the green scale. Although I did at the beginning I can now find targets easily enough with the Litening on the Warthog. Speed maybe a factor as well I'm not sure. Are there any good tips oor tricks? Thanks in advance guys!

If you box the GRAY option on the FLIR page you can access a black/white scale that you can use to adjust the brightness and gain of the display. You can also disable the Automatic Level/Gain (ALG) control and change the FLIR level and gain manually as well.

If your waypoint is over the target you can target designate the waypoint and the pod will point to the waypoint, just make sure the waypoint altitude is set for 0 AGL. After that consider using mark points to help toggling between targets.

check me if i'm wrong, but have to set the waypoint altitude for what the altitude is at the surface, either in the ME or the HSI>DATA>UFC. if you set it at 0 and the waypoint is at 3200' it's going to be way off.....same as if you forget to correct the default of whatever it is 6500 ft or so it appears in the air somewhere over the target? you can reference in game on F10 map and hovering over the waypoint you wanna check.

So how do you make it dis-lay in grayscale once you press the gray option? I see the bar scale of shades, but from there, have no clue?

You don't, the GRAY option just displays a dark-to-light scale you use to adjust the display. The DDIs in the Hornet are only able to display green and red light (yellow when combined), it is not possible for them to use actual black-and-white grayscale.

Or display the FLIR on the AMPCD - then you get the more standard "black hot and white hot" display. I do not use this method, but many seem to do so.

What the others were talking about is just a reference scale that is displayed on the DDI after 'boxing' gray - it's just a tool used while adjusting the brightness/contrast settings of that specific DDI.

Yes, that is old ythread nd after that it was discussed elsewhere that TGP should be possible be technically in bottom one.

you are circling with your link even in that same thread to it itself.

Because someone had made another thread about it, so I linked to the original, and then they were merged. Also, where was it discussed that the MPCD could display the FLIR page? Perhaps the original thread can be updated and closed with the results then.

Just set 0 at target WP's, ME will auto-correct it to the ground-level altitude, whatever that is.

Most pilots who struggle to find targets with the TGP will close in on the target area, lose altitude and/or airspeed while heads down in cockpit.

Make sure to establish an orbit some miles away from target area and use autopilot as desired. The closer you get, the smaller your FOV is.

In the changelog today. There is a function added to the hornet: FTT mode for moving targets. Does that mean, that now we can see ground moving targets on A/G Radar? (forward target track?)

I am having trouble also. I set up a mission of my own similar to one of the provided ones but w/o any SAMS. I keep moving my flying start point further away so I can have more time trying to find my 4 tanks sitting on a road. I am flying at 20,000ft and am not sure if being higher would be better or not. I need to try at 30,000 I guess. I fly directly at the tanks but often can only take out one. At one point I thought I would try flying by them and pointing the pod at 90 degrees. A terrible mistake. Even at just 300 the plane is going by so fast it's impossible to lock onto the tank. Also something happens where slewing control up/down gets swapped w/ left/right. So far the pod is pretty useless to me. I hope more time will help.

Finding things through the "fuzzy straw" is hard.

But you can make things easier than what you are doing.

You should ground stabilize first: TDC depress on some place near the tanks or at least near where you want to search. For e.g., on the road. Put the aircraft on AP (alt/att) and then sweep the road slowly for the tanks. Still should be tricky, but a LOT easier than you describe. Note that images only start rendering about 40-50 nm (? not sure of exact distance) out. Otherwise you just get a blank.

GMT radar will help.

In reality not.

The ground forces are in europe trained from the start to conceal their vehicles against radars, IR cameras and naturally visual detection as well minimize the audible noise.

When a vehicle crew conceals their vehicle like this, then you can't see it on radar even if it is moving.

That is like a F-22 for the A-G radars. Why you need to have a long period of observation to detect that what is changing in the terrain, instead trying to find them by the shape and by movement. It is far more faster and more efficient to have the eyes on the ground with ears, to find where enemy troops are and then get that information over radio to guide you to look for a smaller proper area for them. You don't spot them with FLIR, or with radar. The laser gets as well wanky with them as it doesn't get reflected back strong.

And when well camouflaged vehicle stops, you don't spot it visually. The above one you might spot from 1000-1500 meters when you know where to look, but the bottom one stays stealthy as long the commander is not an idiot that parks that one middle of the crop field or otherwise leave such obvious tracks that makes spotting easy.

The best you can have is someone talking to you over radio where to exactly look, or you get exact coordinates via datalink where to point sensors or drop a bomb.
