P-47 cockpit too dark, a comparaison

P-47 cockpit is too dark! Here you have a comparaison of all the WWII warbirds. Obviously the screenshots are taken with the same 2.2 gamma values and exactly the same position / lightning.

Unfortunately, following the latest trend, ED made the .DDS textures not editable, I could not open them in Photoshop....

Not an issue from my perspective.

Surprising.... Do you use gamma 3.0?

1.9 - silly q maybe, but could it be your monitor brightness setting as opposed to gamma?

Very silly question indeed... then why are ALL the other warbirds cockpits ok, as I clearly have described in my first post?

For better comparison one should make screens in high-noon scenario, without cockpit lights (we want to compare textures and shadows, not lights implementation), while keeping in mind that Mustang, Thunderbolt and Spit have black instrument panels, which make them appear darker than in German birds. Spit's panel seem to be equally dark as Thunderbolts' on screens above, although Mustangs panel does indeed seem a bit lighter.

You are right, here you have the screens in high-noon scenario, without cockpit lights. As you can clearly see, the cockpit of the P-47 is not only much darker, bur more importantly, the readability of the instruments is poor....

Here with the lights turned on.... Still the P-47 far too dark and the readability of the instruments remains poor....

I think it's partially because P-47 is the only warbird now, which is not affected by crappy issue of cockpit interior being lit by terrain reflection shining through the airplane structure from below. And thanks God for that! All remaining ones suffer from this to some extent and I wish they were all adjusted to P-47 level.

That being said, I wouldn't mind Thunderbolt pit being a bit lighter overall. Even if it was, however, I don't think instruments would become much more readable. They're just small and poorly marked compared to all other planes (especially Mustang) anyway.

I did not know about that issue of cockpit interior being lit by terrain reflection shining through the airplane structure from below.... But anyway, the P-47 cockpit is also too dark in when flying very high...

On the other hand, when de sun shines directly on it it is absolutely gorgeous, one sees that it has been developped with the outmost care. A great model! A pity though about that dark cockpit at dawn, dusk, night and when the sun

does not shine directly on it. Hope ED is watching this thread.......

Agreed, the cockpit is slightly to dark. I have my gamma at 2.4 and its still a little dark. to the people that say turn on the lights .... great, but in reality you shouldnt have to in bright daylight. Iam a very happy boy though overall and so pleased i finally have her, and like ac5 said when the direct sunlight is on on it then she is bang tidy and easily the prettiest in DCS (in my opinion).

I'm only trying it out as part of the free trial, and not learning anything in-depth, but honestly, I think it has some of the clearest  set of instruments in DCS.  I especially like the effort that has gone into making the luminous paint look... well... luminous.

Are you spreading the view across multiple screens, or using a very wide screen? That can affect the default FOV / zoom quite badly if you don't account for it. on a single 2560x1440 monitor at default zoom the windscreen arch fills the screen, and the wing guns are not visible. Any wider than that, and yes, the instruments do start getting hard to read, but the same can be said for other aircraft. Your screenshot is certainly a wider FOV than the others, and not what I am seeing. If you want the advantage of an unnatural FOV, rather than having to move your head around, then you pay the cost of a panel that looks like it is 6 feet away and not  2.

EDIT: Bear in mind also that the P-47 cockpit is a fair bit wider (about 36"  below the sills, between the sidewalls), compared to the others, especially the 109, which is more like 24".

Well I have cured my dark cockpit and DCS in general is a lot nicer now to, it kind of made me wonder how I had coped all these years. Anyway all I did was change my monitor picture settings to Cinema and then calibrated it with the win10 calibration tool. It looks absolutely stunning now and that's at 1080p

I just found this topic and although it is old, I agree about the poor visual quality of the P-47 cockpit instruments. The interior dash lights are useless and unless the sun is shining directly in on the dash, I have to zoom in on the dash to read the instruments. I am running gamma at 2.3 and I don't think it should be necessary to wash out the contrast of everything else just to run a higher gamma so the cockpit isn't so dark.

I should have read all the comments before I [posted mine on the dark cabin issue. I tried Brigg's suggestion and it worked great on my recently new LG 4K monitor. Set it to Cinema and then I could pull the gamma back to 2 and now the cockpit dash is bright and easy to read.
