RTX 3080 Experience So Far--2d Triples User

Recommended Posts

Managed to get my hands on an MSI Ventus RTX 3080 this week, and upgraded my 1080ti, which has served very well. Have seen a couple of threads on VR performance, but thought I'd share some initial experiences for 2d players like me.

My machine is an 8700k clocked at 5.1, 32 GB 3200 DDR4, Z370 chipset motherboard. Triple 1440p monitors with a bezel-corrected resolution of 7770x1440. Thats's just over 11 million pixels, about 3 million more than 4k. I run a default Field of View in cockpit of 120, and play the open beta version of DCS.

1080ti did very well running this, always playable---but had to run with no MSAA and would run 45 to 65 fps in single player, depending of the map (Syria was tough, Nevada, pretty smooth). Textures all high, no heat blur, trees high, view distance Extreme, 1024 cockpits.

Using the new MSI Afterburner plugin which monitors VRAM usage in addition to VRAM allocation, all 11GB of the 1080ti VRAM was often allocated (especially in Syria)---but usage topped out in the low 9GB range on Syria, 7gb range on other maps (PG, Caucasus, Nevada).

With the 3080---I see similar minimum FPS. I think this shows that DCS still loads up CPU for a lot of the rendering of buildings and terrain features. At takeoff from Turkey in F14 Instant action, get 48 to 55 fps as wheels start rolling. Where the 3080 shows its power, though, is in the settings one can run. With 4x MSAA (remember---on 11 million pixels)---it runs 45 to 75 fps in single player and sustains 60+ fps except dipping into mid 50's over dense cities on the Syria map. The low of 45, like on the 1080ti, is pretty much only seen on a runway in the Syria map.

The improvement in image quality at 1440p with 4x MSAA or 2xMSAA with MFAA enabled is beautiful, and to do this on triple 1440p is impressive.

The VRAM usage is the same as on the 1080ti, and it doesn't appear to be affected at all by MSAA levels. Pretty sure 10gb VRAM is sufficient for now if it handles this high of resolution.

The sum of the matter is this: it appears due to CPU bottleneck which is inherent in DCS, the raw min and avg fps jumping to 3080 is not jaw dropping. However, the headroom to pump antialiasing to high levels on 7770x1440 resolution is rather impressive---

If Syria is disregarded---(hopefully it will be tuned in early access)---the 3080 delivers 60+ sustained fps on 11 million pixels with 4x MSAA or 2xMSAA and MFAA.

Very useful update, thanks. Can't say I'm surprised, but I'm very grateful for you confirming.

Whilst I'm now a die-hard VR user, I bet that it looks utterly amazing on screens.

Thanks for the useful feedback!

Lets hope for a good news about Vulkan+VR by end of this year.

Many thanks for sharing. I was exaclty waiting for a thread like this as I´m also running a 1080Ti and 3x 1440p displays. My CPU is older but still performing well. I achieve the same FPS mentioned by you, also without MSAA. I really wonder if it would be worth for me upgrading the GPU. Or should I aim for the CPU first whch means a new Mobo and RAM as well. I could imagine that DDR 4 already improves something over the DDR 3 I actually have. I think a little long term as it is a bad time to invest into new hardware knowing all the new CPU´s and GPU´s are around the corner. But isn´t it always a bad time to invest as always new hardware is around the corner :smilewink:

Again thanks for sharing, thisis a puzzle piece I needed for getting a clearer picture of my current situation.

As a thought, the CPU is the main bottleneck and any new GPU will only get as far as the CPU allows.

Bottom line, my 1080ti stays where it is, plenty for my WHD 2560*1440 screen, really plenty.

Think you're exactly right...a 1080ti will run 1440p single screen pretty well maxed out.

I bet you've gotten your money's worth out of that 4790k. Great chip. I loved a 2600k for years until I couldn't resist upgrading to the 8700k...it was still quite strong. Intel chips have had legs for years due to only modest clock and IPC gains generation to generation since the 2600k. I didn't get into DCS until after the upgrade...so can't advise of the gain you might see from a 4790k.

Adding the 3080 turned out to basically be an upgrade in MSAA and average FPS..but little benefit to minimum fps. ...Frankly, the sim was still beautiful with no MSAA and played very smoothly on the 1080ti.

Now...I'm gonna keep the 3080...but I'd have been some kind of pissed if I had paid $1200+ for a 2080ti for even less gain ...

Sure thing.

Your triple 1080p resolution will be different---and you'll want to set up Surround with bezel correction in nvidia control panel (or Eyefinity in AMD's control panel, which is a bit more difficult to find).

Hi.

Could we get your full graphics settings?  I've just got 3x 27 1080p monitors and a 1080ti and trying to find something in between the preset mid and high settings.

Thanks
