Available Dynamic Campaigns, Comparison? Pros Cons? BMS-like?

Recommended Posts

Hello folks,

just asking if you can help me deciding which campaign to go for. What are their pros and cons? I'm coming from Falcon BMS and look forward for an immersive dynamic campaign. I'd appreciate any help from experienced folks.

Thanks in advance!

Try out Liberation or DCE campaigns. ED hasn't released a dynamic campaign like BMS. But I guess you know that already.

Cheers!

You guessed right mate haha :) So, what are the differences between Liberation or DCE campaigns? I saw a nice GUI reg. Liberation.

What do you like more and why? What comes closer to BMS? (well.. none of them really, but one is better than the other right?)

I like both.

DCE, is like for one aircraft. And it generates different missions for you, and you choose. It's a little more "complicated" (not really), to setup.

Liberation gives you more control, and you can choose more what aircraft, and even control ground units if you have Combined Arms. I feel from what I've read, that the campaign system ED will choose, is more like this one.

Both is free, so just try.

Liberation is the closest thing we have to BMS style campaign. It's all I use. Very good work.

Thank you all for answering :)

Would you mind telling me why it's the closest thing to BMS? :) Maybe telling some story what you have experienced.

Downloading Liberation right now! Need to wait till the kids go to bed, give my wife a few kisses and off I am.

Liberation you pick your theater and then you have to 'buy' your units. Not just aircraft but frontline units as well. The AI will do the same and the front line will move back and forth between each 'airbase'. Airbase's are what you have to capture. You create flight packages for your aircraft (strike, CAP, CAS, SEAD, etc) or the AI will do it for you. Then you pick the mission you want to be part of and then fly the mission. After the mission the campaign engine compares everything and then moves the front line forward or backwards depending on what side did better.

The frontline is moving, so you will see enemy tanks rolling forwards and vice versa. The enemy will also have strike targets for you to hit like ammo dumps, fuel depots, factories, etc. Destroying these will degrade their ability to replace their lost units.

It's actually pretty simple. I only fly the A10C II lately so i just jump in that and set CAP flights to watch my ass while i do strike missions or provide CAS for the front line.

I really like both DCE and Liberation.

With DCE, you can really get the feeling that you're on a deployment, as a pilot of one specific aircraft. It will usually present you with anywhere from 3 to 7 missions you can choose from every turn. I really enjoy the F-14 campaigns from the Supercarrier in DCE. Sometimes you go out on a CAP and maybe you wont even get engaged, but not seeing the enemy on the F10 map the tension is always there. Sometimes it's a huge air battle at night and things get really hectic, then you have to tanker or land on the boat in pitch black, or if you're lucky sunrise, my favorite. Escort missions are fun too because strike aircraft are synched up well with your flight so you really feel like you're a part of something larger.

Liberation I would say is more "fun", but not that DCE isn't fun, Liberation just gives you a lot more freedom. Fly any aircraft you own, on any mission you want to frag for yourself. It's frequently updated. I personally could do without the strategic element of buying units at your bases, but you really don't need to spend a lot of time or thought doing it.

So I fly both depending on what I want to do that session. CAS in the Ka50 - Liberation. Want to be Maverick and Goose - DCE. Both are good and they are easily the best we have in DCS at the moment.

Liberation is like BMS because after day 2 all the (fun) threats are gone.

P-51D | Fw 190D-9 | Bf 109K-4 | Spitfire Mk IX | P-47D | WW2 assets pack | F-86 | Mig-15 | Mig-21 | Mirage 2000C | A-10C II | F-5E | F-16 | F/A-18 | Ka-50 | Combined Arms | FC3 | Nevada | Normandy | Straight of Hormuz | Syria

I disagree. Liberation is more of a sandbox, where you can control what happens.

DCE is much more like flying BMS sytle campaigns, where you have an overall ATO for the entire theater and get assigned to a flight of a certain strike package and it provides you with a very BMS like briefing.

Is there something special you need to do to run Liberation?

I downloaded this, tried to run it, but all I get is a quickly disappearing black window...then nothing. I’m guessing that the black window contains an error message, but it flashes on and disappears too quickly for me to see.

I have not read through the thread but I'm certain my suggestion will have been mentioned several times. I would say DCS Liberation. It's like a persistent campaign with front lines that move, you can play single or multi player, it has a nice GUI to setup scenerios. Prior to this, I would use DCS like a sandbox game, just fly around shooting down planes and blowing up ground targets. I'd get bored and turn it off quickly. Liberation brings pushing enemy lines and capturing bases into it and it saves progress as you go. It makes this awesome sandbox sim into a game.

If I recall the only things special were running it as admin and I think you were supposed to backup a lua file before you start because there's a modified file that allows the saving of progress for the campaign, but there's some sort of warning about vulnerability so you would want to switch the LUA file back to the original one if you play online multiplayer on public servers.

The Liberation campaign gen (did I get name right?) Is cool. Lots of ppl like it. Wasnt totally my thing

DCE IMO is the best. By far. However I had a motherf***er of a time getting it to work though many dont and get it working easy peasy. The dudes on thread will help and theres a DCE for almost every plane as well.

Thats what Id recommend. the damage is persistent blah blah.

+1 Liberation has a financial aspect too like your a PMC and you control all the strikes, they arent generated automatically. Its more like being a commander of all forces AND pilot. ( you even have to buy ground forces and tell them to be offensive, defensive, ambush etc! )

DCE is much more close to just being 'another pilot'

Being a user and maker of DCE campaigns I will try to stay honest about my feelings of the two campaigns :

They have quite different philosophy :

- Liberation is like a wargame with a flight simulator inside : you choose what kind of units you want on the battlefront and where to put it. There's a budget to manage and you choose the global strategy. You are being able to influence battle results with your skill in the air too.

The initial ground and air forces settings are minimal and it's you that will decide everything.

- Mbot DCE concept is more to simulate the life (and death ! ) of a pilot in a squadron while a war is going on. Yours choices are really simple : you can change yours weapons and your navigation but you will have to take into account other flights timings of your package. Most mission have package with precised timings for Strikers SEAD, Escorts. So you can fly where and when you want but if you need support try to respect timing !

Mbot original campaigns don't give choices for missions : it's of course more realistic. We choose to allow limited missions choice when possible.

DCE should be more immersive or RPG like but you will depend completly of campaign designers choices and is basically a one plane type campaign although we are working to allow more targets and planes types for MP mainly.

Liberation allow more freedom in missions and planes. Moving targets and Frontline are really nice but maybe players who only want to fly a plane with no managing should look to DCE

i like DCE when i am very comfortable with an aircraft. it does a great job of making missions that fit the campaign, but you gotta know what you're doing.

Liberation you can tailor to your skill. It's perfect to learn a new module. Just got the new A10C II and kinda just learning? Perfect, load up a Liberation campaign against just insurgents. You don't have to worry about enemy aircraft or SAMs, but there will be lots of targets for you to practice on.
