2080Ti vs RTX 3090 for VR

The next bottleneck can always be God knows where. I have a system running 8700K with 32 GB Ram and 1080ti - it is ok with Reverb, not stellar, but it is playable. I do not know if I can expect a full boost going to 3090 or whether it would be better to settle with 3080 as something else might be already on the limit...On the other hand I have a mind to get Reverb G2 first and worry about the GPU later :D

Yep, keep in mind that a big fat GPU also needs a CPU with big shovels to keep up with the GPU's data amount and bandwidth at high resolutions. If the CPU gets overwhelmed, a "simple" GPU upgrade might make things worse.

Would you mind testing your system flying in a heavy AI scenario and reporting back on the performance? Something like a few SAM groups, AWACS, Tankers, moving ground units and a multiple fighter groups?

I took the mission on normandy because of much AI scenarios for the purpose of testing. Not very VR friendly. There's a lot stuff going on. Three separate groups of spitfires in the air. a p51 mustang group on the ground and moving enemy fighters further away. many moving ground units, as well as even more anti air units on the ground. hope it could help you.

Absolute!

Single core performance is the most important part of a CPU for DCS.

Looking at some tube videos it does look like the CPU frametime lowers with the same settings in some games(2080ti vs 3090) this seems to be the case in at least some DCS scenarios also. CPU Frametime actually lowered from getting a better GPU is good for the total performance.

No, a 3090 will definitely provide a boost in performance. (The 3090 plays just fine with all Direct X code. The shaders don't care what API is being used.) With what I have personally seen, the 3090 is about 41% faster than a 2080 Ti with the Reverb (VR headset) in DCS 2.5.6. The question is whether that boost is worth ~ $1700 or more.

I honestly don't believe it's going to provide much of a noticeable difference. That 3090 card is built for workstations, no gaming application is using 24gigs of Vram right now. Maybe in the future but I doubt anytime soon, no dev is going to devote time to a feature for a demographic of almost none since only enthusiasts pay upwards of $700+ for video cards. I was going to get the 3080 but the damn thing sold out in seconds, the same thing happened to that 3090 card. I'd be a fool to think the same thing won't happen with the 3070 card. The unprecedented demand Nvidia says they were not expecting are opportunists using bots to snag everything up and resale for a ripoff on the secondary marked, so I'll just upgrade this old ass 1070 to a 2080 and start saving for a 3080 again. By the time stock stabilizes, I'll have either saved the money again or ED will have completed the upgrade to Vulkan, either way those 3000 series cards won't be available anytime soon.

Even though Aurelius said he personally saw a 41% increase in performance with the Reverb? Hmm..

I definitely seeing a noticable improvement of at least 40% in non-CPU bound parts of DCS and plenty of overhead when it is for better graphics options from my 1080 Ti to 3090. Also I am seeing DCS at least allocate more than 15gb of VRAM (I know fpsVR/Afterburner don't report VRAM actually used).

I'm seeing a very noticeable improvement from my 2080ti to my 3090 with the Reverb as well. I upgraded my primary DCS PC from 9900k to 10900k as well. I'm working on some benchmarks and videos comparing my 9900k/2080ti to my 10900k/3090 (Zotac, I have 2 other 3090 from Asus and an eVGA 3080 enroute as well). The Zotac 3090 is performing well, idle temp 43, Timespy in the high 19800 range right now. It does sag slightly in the Gigabyte z490 board mount, but I don't notice unless I really stare at it.

The 3090 turned DCS in a highend VR experience on my end. VRAM problems gone and everything crystal clear on double panel resolution SS plus 4x MSAA. The last limiting factor is DCS's bad CPU frametime, i hope to see improvements there in the future, after the engine overhaul.

For almost £2000 pounds I really hope so. :megalol:

I love these exaggerations! Closer to £1500 in most cases.

Don't forget all the other hardware involved. Makes more than 6000 or 7000 quids for the highend experience? :pilotfly:

No need for exaggerations if there is enough money to throw at the problems. ;)

Ah ok, now it's bargain.

But only if you could actually buy one for that price.

Becoming a pointless discussion, but.....

Never said it was a bargain, just mentioning your exaggeration. See attached. Normal, trustworthy UK retailer typical prices.

I paid £1479 for my EVGA XC3 Gaming.

Did you win the 3090 bingo? From day 1, I never saw it in stock for that price.

What are you talking about? It's not 'in stock' anywhere! All retailers have a huge backlog of orders. I'm talking about the price you actually pay.

Are you actually in the UK? You first talk about £2000, then you try to justify your claim by posting prices in Euros, but now you're talking again about how you didn't see those prices in the UK.

I'm in Europe now, but also work in the UK for a few months every year. I still buy from the UK for most of the time even with shipping included, it's cheaper than buying directly from here.

I understand you got emotional about that. You're lucky to pay only £1500. But you're missing the point entirely. You want to buy it today, how much are you going to pay? £1500? Not in this continent. You won't find for less than £2000, which you called and laughed as an exaggeration.

Being able to buy it today was NEVER the point. I am talking about the price you pay in the UK to be delivered whenever the retailer is able to. I am expecting to have mine delivered in the next week.

I'm not saying any more on this.

err well i ordered mine at 1500GBP so if you are ordering yours for delivery today at 1700GBP then you are spending 200 quid for now... if that's worth it to you go do that otherwise... don't. You don't have to pay 1700 IMO you shouldnt
