Anyone planning on getting the 3090 for VR?

Star Wars Squadron game play is fun, but I'm NOT at all impressed with the graphics. In some areas it looks cartoonish like borderlands. Elite Dangerous is a much older game with far superior graphics, especially in VR.

Yeah I had a blast playing that one yesterday also. Gorgeous in VR.

Well I have about decided it is time to have "a talk" later this evening with my wonderful wife , and see what kind of reaction I get when I tell her I would very much like to spend the bucks on a 3090 card. If I don't change my mind again before then which is certainly possible lol.

Don, go to dinner and look absolutely frustrated (but not upset, this is important). When she asks "what's wrong?" Say, "oh, nothing..." but sigh (this is important)

When she inevitably follows up with another question, say "Oh, that computer part I was going to change an changed my mind about? I may have been rash...I think my first decision was right....Remember the CUDA cores? The extra memory BW, the unique fan design?" As her eye rolls back from boredom throw in a "....but it's OK, I'll deal with it some how."

And you'll have your 3090!

:D:D You're welcome.

Huh? Can you specify? What does any of that mean?

It means that you can take a high resolution HMD, set a higher SS value than it's original panel resolution and still go extremely high with DCS settings, like 4x MSAA, shadows and cockpit GI enabled, high or ultra or extreme on the other settings and the 3090 won't let you down.

That was my first test: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/729748024724553738/761635988866072606/DCS_Settings_3090.jpg

Atm i'm also running visibility range set to extreme. If money isn't the problem, you can get there with the latest gen of hardware. I still would recommend to wait for the 16GB VRAM versions from Nvidia and AMD for better bang for the buck ratio. And maybe next year, with DCS's core engine overhauled, even lower tier hardware will be able to get the same results.

Lol yeah at least something like that.

I think I more so have to convince myself it is worth spending that amount.

Really peeved at Nvidia for only putting 10GB of Vram in the 3080's.

OK got the wife's whole hearted blessing!

I have decided to go with the 3090 in hopes it really helps get a great experience with the upcoming Reverb G2. At least the best I can achieve.

Going to hold out till I can get my hands on specifically an EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra. No telling when that will be, hoping I can get it by the time the Reverb G2 gets here.

Awesome. I'm going to sit tight for Hyrbrid (AIO) version. I switched to CPU air/tower cooler so I need to be careful.

Talked to Falcon Northwest today... apparently I’ll be in the second batch of 3090s and my system will ship around the 13th.

I’m inclined to just wait until then to get Squadrons going. Bonus: they may have patched HOTAS issues I’ve read about by then.

Until then, I’m getting close to winning a Syria campaign in Liberation.

Just got a message from FalconNW and called them back... they have the 3090 FE in stock and were offering to me in place of the EVGA XC3 Gaming.

Since the FE is what I wanted to begin with, I took it. The system is already built pending a video card, but now due to the larger size of the FE, will require some slight reconfiguration. It may end up shipping late this week, or possibly Monday.

I’m told they have 20 of them in stock, but will only sell individual cards if you’re already a customer.

If you’re looking for a new system, they may be the ticket for you.

So you're going to make a youtube video of DCS running on your 3090 and posting the link here, Right?

I’ve never done that before... wouldn’t know the first thing about it!

What do people use to capture that video? I can’t just have someone record me with their phone.

I WOULD be glad to post my DCS and card settings and FPS.

What do people use to capture that video?

Windows 10 has a integrated X-Box live control bar wich is capable of recording in-game videos. I had always good results with it. Maybe you wanna give it a try. To activate it press Win + G and start recording by pressing the record button. Longer videos with X-Box live are propably to large for uploading, depending on your internet connection. But for a short video demonstrating your FPS etc., it should be ok. Another option would be FRAPS, but i haven't used it since i upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10. So i can't tell how it works out under Win 10.

edit: I'm a bit confused about the new 30XX series. I'm not sure if i'm willing to spend 1500-1800 bucks for the 3090 and i'm wondering if there will be a 3080Ti, wich is what i'm waiting for. I haven't read anything about it, just that there will propably be a 3080 with 16-20GB VRAM. Will this be the 3080Ti, or will the 3080Ti be a separate model? Does anyone know that?

Cheers

Yep, it works well, but is there any way to include overlays, like fpsVR? Much more important to see that info than a simple fps.

Afaik, the X-Box live bar records anything displayed on your screen. But to be honest, i never tried it with any overlays.

I’m currently using the Rift S, so any results I post will be with that until the G2 comes.

Shouldn’t DCS’s built in FPS counter be enough?

No, it’s not all about fps especially when reprojection is involved. Frame time is much more interesting.

How about when you press it a second time and all the extra info shows up? For it provide frame time (and what is frame time, by the way)?

Frame time is the time it takes for your GPU to render a frame. So if you have a frame time of 20ms, you would see FPS of 1000/20, i.e. 50.

If that’s so, can’t you just calculate it from your FPS?

Applies to your CPU as well. That can sometimes be the bottleneck and hold back the GPU.

fpsVR gives you all that info.
