Got TACAN?

So, do any bases have TACAN?

I've already read that Syrian airfields have the Russian built equivalent, but what about Israeli and Turkic airfields?

Thanks for the answers.

How do I find out what channels they use?

A few years back it used to be officially allowed when submitting a flight plan to Israeli ATC to file Ramat David (LLRD) as an alternate for TLV Ben Gurion (LLBG) and it is public knowledge that Ramat David Airbase has for many years an active ILS approach for runway 33 and it is classified as CAT 1.

Some years ago this was changed and neither the TACAN nor the ILS of Ramat David is published in the Israeli AIP, however there is a public map on the Israeli Civil Aviation Authority website available for download that lists a VOR at Ramat David using VHF freq 113.70 Mhz

Link for download of map:

NAV2010-North101010.pdf

I suggest using the following to extrapolate the TACAN channel from the VHF frequency:

https://509tigers.org/confidential/docs/global/01_TACAN_EN.pdf

Using this guide the TACAN channel for Ramat David should be 084X

The ILS frequency is not publicly available so any frequency can be used.

Prevailing winds in the area are mostly from the NW and sometimes from WNW so I suggest adding ILS to runways 33 and 29 at Ramat David.

The GPS fixes that should be added to the NS430 and the A-10C FMS database can be found in the CAAI's AIP website ENR chapters 4 and 6.

The Portable TACAN Beacon is now working (YEAH!) and can be placed anywhere, so you can make your own TCN wherever you like.

Find it in the Mission Planner: Ground Units/ FORTIFICATION/ TACAN Beacon (Man Portable) TTS 3030.

You need to define a TCN Channel via the "Advanced (Waypoint Actions)" after you placed it.

Ahhh yes, so I guess I've answered my own questions.

TACAN is only on Incirlik airfield. No others have TACAN.

You cannot see the TACAN nor other navigational assistance info in the ME, only from within mission :(

Portable TACAN is there in the ME as =52d= Skip stated. It's official - not a mod :D .... ED never announced it - I looked through all updates since January; not a word about it :mad:

Indeed, thank you for that hint! The TACAN Beacon works, but it is not very reliable. Just tested on the PG. I have set the frequency to 97X (AFAIK this one is not used by another station on PG) and placed the Beacon next to an airbase. Around 50 NM away from the TACAN Beacon the TACAN indication was totally wrong, only the distance was shown correctly. After getting closer (within 15 NM) the position was correctly indicated on the HSI. Maybe the transmission power of the mobile TACAN Bacon is too low to cover greater ranges. Or it's still WIP, what could be the reason, that the capability for transmitting a TACAN signal hasn't been announced so far.

I haven't looked closely at this one. The one from SUNTSAG is based on a KC-130 IIRC and you cas set the power output, default being 100w.

Maybe the official one can have the power output set was well. If so, pump it up to 500w or 1000w if you need that distance.

Actually I don't think you do. You should know approximately where it is setup, like within 10-15 miles. If you're 50 miles away you should be able to dead-recon to get close enough to get a solid signal.

Does it actually work now? And is it only OB? Because is Stable, you can place the unit, but you cannot Task it to Transmit.

Yes, WAD (Works As Designed). Set channel et all in advanced waypoint tasks. Range is just over 15nm, at least from an F/A-18C flying between 10 and 20k.

I assume Ramat David is just not complete atm in that regards. And probably all the others too, just flown from there and the Area around so far.

There is more information missing, for example the Airbase has 4 Runways but you can only see the Details of one Runway in F10 Map. So maybe we will get more stuff, at least some ILS in the future

Correct. I just placed the beacon in an existing mission and was very happy, as I saw the advanced waypoint settings for the TACAN functions. Then I started the mission once and observed the described behaviour :)

+1 PLEASE. An airbase as big and important as Ramat David and only has a NDB? Please, do the base fully functional for modern jets with TACAN and ILS, even if it's exactly like real life. 99,9999% of as simmers are not going to fly never in real life to Ramat David, so who cares? Some "SimCharts" for procedures, adapted to the sim, would be great too.

Funily enough, a lot of the beacons that are marked as NDBs, actually have TACANs as their model, including the one at Ramat David

If you are comfortable with editing your beacons.lua, the following lines will add VORTAC and ILS to Ramat David. Note that this will break IC, so keep a backup of beacons.lua for multiplayer use.

I found the problem! It must be written like that:

               frequency = 110300000.000000;
               position = { -257893, 41.7576, -75916 };
               direction = 146.59;

               sceneObjects = {'t:000000000'};
               chartOffsetX = 2682;
       };
    {
               display_name = _('RamatDavid');
               beaconId = 'airfield30_3';
               type = BEACON_TYPE_ILS_GLIDESLOPE;

               chartOffsetX = 120;
    };
    {

I did a mod to install with OvGME for the lua file and it works fine.
