Igor4U
There seems to be Less than expected Consensus (and no Standardized Methodology for Measuring) on the Top Speeds of WWII Fighters. I decided to see what I could get out of the DCS World P-51D and P-47D. Using Instant Action - Caucasus - Free Flight - Missions and Clean Configuration - Prop Fine Pitch - Full Throttle - After Leveling Off at Test Altitude, allowed Three Minutes for Aircraft to Accelerate and Stabilize at Steady State Speed Here’s what I got: Ft MSL Type P-47D P-51D 5,000 mph 322 343 KIAS 280 298 15,000 mph 297 293 KIAS 258 255 25,000 mph 251 261 KIAS 218 227 NOTE: Formatting of Pasted Text got Jumbled - Please See attached Picture of Comparison Chart - Tanks ! Result Summary: The Mustang certainly hold a Speed Advantage at Low Altitude, while at Higher Altitudes the Two Aircraft are fairly Close Interested in anyone else's Results :pilotfly:
grafspee
Try add 35K top speed :) Remember, DCS P-47 haven't got water injection yet. zcrazyx
i did sea level on standard mission editor settings caucasus. SL and 10k ft SL p47 and 51 averaged about equal at 10k p47 (356) p51 (385mph) note these speeds were taken with tacview
Legioneod
Top Speed of a D-30 IRL. at 64" WEP SL: 345mph (555kph) 5,000: 370mph (595kph) 15,000: 404mph (650kph) 24,500: 437mph (703kph) 29,000ft: 443mph (712kph) Once the P-47 is finished we should see speeds very close to this. Legioneod
What prop this data is for? Curtis Electric Blade 836-2C2-18. Pretty much the standard paddle prop on all P-47s (except for the D-22, D-25, and D-27. They used the Hamilton) D-23, D-26,D-28, and D-30 all used the Curtis prop. I should clarify that the speeds below 29,000ft were achieved at a design useful load of 13,020 lbs. The Speed at 29,000ft was at a weight of around 12,700 lbs. From other documents I've seen at 13,000lbs it would be closer to 436mph at 29,000ft.
ED Team Yo-Yo Posted August 8, 2020 ED Team Share Posted August 8, 2020 Weight is not a significant factor for max speed as it is a high powered plane. Igor4U
My Speed were Indicated (Not TAS) MP? P-51 with 67" MP can reach at SL 368 mph TAS. At 5000ft 385-390 mph. Conditions - ISA. Manual radiator control to stay within temp limits. At 5,000 ft MSL I got 343 (Indicated) mph out of the 'Stang' in Level Flight Full Throttle. Corrected to TAS (ROT 2% for every 1,000 ft in Altitude), that 343 mph Indicated would equal approx 380 mph TAS. Very Close to what you Experienced :pilotfly: ! gavagai
2% for every 1000ft is not reliable. Why not just look at your TAS with the tools available to you in DCS? Legioneod
Weight is not a significant factor for max speed as it is a high powered plane. Either way, the speeds I listed are accurate for the D-30 at 64" WEP.
Igor4U
Performed some Updated Testing - including 35K' The P-47 is in the same general Speed Regime as the 'Stang', but the 51 still has a few extra 'mph' on the Bolt Attached Chart show my latest Numbers:
