AI JU 88

Recommended Posts

  • Ju 88A-4 - torpedo bomber aircraft
  • A-20 - medium bomber aircraft

These two additions, are simply stunning in detail and workmanship. I haven't looked at the other models yet. I did look at the Elefant which is also amazing in detail and workmanship.

In the very old precursor to DCS, I loved flying the Ju 88 on torpedo runs, it was one of my favorite aircraft. She is lovingly re-created here.

A big thank you to all the artists and developers involved with bringing the Ju 88 to us with such stunning detail. As well as all the other assets.

See latest post entries, a bug exists for damaged JU's that are parked. They will lose a wing, still stand on one leg, will even taxi and run if sustaining catastrophic damage after landing and on the ground.

Unfortunately, as in the B-17, deck shooters are snipers themselves, and shooting down this machine is almost impossible. Of course, it can be said that it is still a beta version, but the B-17 is in a stable and beta version, and its problems are the same in both versions for many months. So we are waiting for DM, without it they are just static models for viewing standing at the airport.

Couldn't agree more, the current gunners are way, way too accurate and deadly:

Which is a shame because they added a dispersion from the two existing WW2 ships that allows a lot more tracer and gunfire without the pinpoint accuracy. I do like a dispersion effect or at least something human about shooting to protract the gunfighting.

Obviously it's WIP and such, but it is top of my own list for AI human gunnery, nect to damage modelling.

Amazing looking objects though.

just tried replacing some B17s for the A20s in a mission using WW2 big formation and the A20s are reacting to threats like a fighter and go after the Luftwaffe fighters. So seems like escort missions are off the table with these AI unless anybody has a workaround for it?

Not disagreeing entirely, but I will create missions using the Anton specifically to shoot down B-17s, and recently the JU - yeah you have to jink, and jive to avoid a stream of inbound fire, but I have left plenty of B-17's and JU's smoking on the ground.

Of course, the mission is simple, with only 3 B-17's or JU's, and me flying at them from the six. They can be shot down, but yes, if you dally for a perfect six line up, or stay in their cone of fire too long, you die pretty quick!

I dont agree with this at all.

Sitting on the 6 of a bomber is going to get you killed. Don't do it. just ask Peter Townsend :)

Conduct slashing and head on attacks, the exact tacti8cs that were successful during the war.

B17s, Ju88s and A20s can all be shot down this way.

I think people overrate their own shooting, and think that bombers are easy prey. They are not. a single fighter sitting on the 6 of a bomber is just asking for trouble.

Set their instructions properly in the ME, and they won.

Ju88 responds in the correct manner A20 does not same mission parameters set. Works on B17 formation as well.

I can give it a try but in previous experience it makes no difference if it is set to no reaction or passive defence etc. Looking at the bugs section I think someone has reported it and has tried this.

Have tried both passive defence and no reaction A20s will not stay in formation and engage fighters. Ju88s stay in formation while being attacked.

I have been testing this today. I do not think the AI gunners are too good at all.

If you get onto their "six" and close in slowly, presenting a steady target to aim at, you will get chewed up.

However, if you have a good approach speed, do not maintain a steady az/el for their gunners and clear out to then make a second pass, they are moderately easy.

I have shot down six Ju88s today using a P-51... and I don't normally fly the P-51.

But to echo the original post, the new Ju 88 model is stunning. Really, really nice work. And to watch them do torpedo runs is sublime. I just wish I could fly one. Maybe one day?

Hi, really struggled in the spit to get a lone Ju88, epecially from behind. i decided on different tactic and went after a 6 bird formation with an F18 loaded for 'bear';they died well! a good firework show

why not set an option where they are not that deadly, for people who are for instance not that experienced.

there should be a difference between average, good, high, and excellent that still makes them hard to kill or easier if u do wish so, but even average is still laser like in my opinion

its not like they only kill u if your sitting on their six like a duck.

it would be much better if people could set the enemy gunners to there skill and liking but as for now it is not possible.

EDIT: i thought my A-20s where set to average but actually they where set to high, my bad. now they are definatly managable tho i had only 4 of them versus me and 3 ai wingmen. gonna try the ju 88s but i guess it will be a similar.

P-51 is a magic plane in DCS, I fired half a magazine from BF109 into it, Mustang smokes, parts fall out and I did nothing. Mustang flies on as if nothing had happened to it, retaining all flight parameters. This is not only my opinion, but also the people who fly on it. No DM in DCS for WWII aircraft. B-17 shooters can shoot you down easily from 1000m, very unrealistic.

You've missed the last ten years of conversation on the damage modelling. TLDR; it's right around the corner and slightly delayed. by 9 years and a month ;)

The JU 88 looks great, but I noticed that sometimes it behave strange and flying sideways...

If you can capture this, and create a bug report, it might be helpful for the ED team.

I have not seen it, but I will make an effort to observe.

Also, possibly the wrong place to be flagging this, but in the same mission I witnessed the Crabstang, I saw that a few of the damage/destruction animations for the Ju-88 (and the Bf-109) were a little odd.

These aircraft were caught taxiing and were repeatedly strafed by AI P-51s performing a "fighter sweep". They broke, umm, awkwardly leaving unsupported fuselages just suspended in the air, multiple canopies left underneath the 109s (I think one per strafe attack, but not certain) and same again for elevator parts on one of them.

After reading the Bug posting rules, this would be a good place to put this. I guess I can change the title? Here is a pic, of a running JU that was damaged after landing, standing on one leg.

I recall B-17s doing the same type of shenanigans (although I saw that many months ago), so I guess AI bombers don't really have proper collision models implemented yet.
