HP Reverb G2 Announced - next Gen

dburne, thanks for raising this. I've been doubting my own eyesight and reading up about VR focal distances because I would swear stuff that is close to my virtual eyes is being rendered at a higher resolution than stuff farther away. For example, the fine print on the bulkhead right next to my head is incredibly clear, whereas the gauges or digital readouts on the lower part of the instrument panel are much fuzzier than how they look in any through-the-lens videos I've seen (unless I zoom in, at which point they are tack sharp). I also have this experience in the other sim many of us fly.

I had thought it might be an artifact of reprojection, but turning it off didn't help. All of this is with Steam VR SS set at 50% to get close to the G2's native resolution. If most folks (and to Gun Jam's point, reviewers) are running much higher SS, that could well be the answer I suppose. I'll try upping it to 80 or 100 tonight. I've been reluctant to do that because I'm still driving a humble 1080 and i7 6700k at 4.8 Ghz, and I'm finding it hard to get DCS playable even at 50%. (As a point of comparison, my CPU frame times in that other sim never go above 10, and in DCS, with the VR graphics preset, they are in the 70s! I clearly need to work on my DCS settings more).

You might try playing around with the DCS cross-eyes tool for WMR headsets too. I was messing with that yesterday and it made things clearer than they were at the default settings, but if you take things too far it distorts things and throws the world scale off. Still tweaking to find the optimal settings.

EVGA Z690 Classified, Intel i9 12900KS Alder Lake processor, MSI MAG Core Liquid 360R V2 AIO Liquid CPU Cooler, G.SKILL Trident Z5 RGB Series 64GB DDR5 6400 memory, EVGA RTX3090 FTW3 Ultra 24GB video card, Samsung 980PRO 1TB M2.2280 SSD for Windows 10 64-bit OS, Samsung 980PRO 2TB M2.2280 SSD for program files, LG WH14NS40 Blu-Ray burner. HOTAS Warthog, Saitek Pedals, HP Reverb G2. Partridge and pear tree pending. :pilotfly:

Interesting, thanks! This being my first WMR headset, I was unaware of that tool (it does not pop up for me by default, but I see from other threads like I can enable it in config file). I'll give it a try. I don't think it will fix the whole issue, as the fuzziness of objects more than a foot or so away from my virtual eyes is not unique to DCS. But it is one variable to eliminate, so very helpful.

It is a shame HP did not also offer a 80 Hz refresh mode like the Rift S has. It would certainly help in the performance department.

I have tried 60 Hz and that is just too low for me, can't handle that.

agreed on both counts; some people swear by 60hz; and best of "British to them", but its like looking at strobe show for me ... far far worse (foe me) than reprojection at 90hz

Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but no microphone is visible to Windows, even when WMR is running. Voiceattack is also reporting there is no microphone.

Can anyone help with this issue?

I've also tried getting SteamVR to recognize the G2, but no dice so far.

Thanks

EDIT: Seems it doesn't like the USB C port on my motherboard. Using the USB A adapter and moving it around to different ports seemed to do the trick. SteamVR and VoiceAttack seem to work now. Now to just get it configured properly.

I wondered about that too. But my VA works just fine with the G2 headset, so there must be a built in microphone in the headset. Make sure you have headset audio selected in WMR. I don't recall the exact name of the setting, but go to WMR audio settings and it will be obvious.

There was in g1, for va make sure it's set to Windows default, also note if you leave wmr, e.g, go back to the desktop and shut down wmr you will likely need to restart va.

Thanks guys. I just had to find the right USB port to plug into and the microphone was recognized. I’m good.

I spent last night dialing in settings, will work on it again this afternoon after work.

Cant believe people complaining about 60 Fps and not 90 fps. I consider myself a blessed man with 30 fps in my rift cv1. What i call unplayable is 15 fps or less.

I'm with you. Its true there are people more sensitive to low fps/ghosting than others, also there are FPS snobs around. I'd also loved 90 stable FPS but it is what it is.

Hi all.

Old timer in DCS here, but never in VR.

I have a couple questions for you guys specialists of all things VR :-)

1) I am considering jumping in and perhaps buying the G2, is it the best choice?

2) Any drawbacks if I have to wear glasses?

3) I have quite a good processor (i9 9900) and a pretty good GPU (GTX 1080 FTW2 icx), is it going to work well?

thanks!

The screens in CV1 still refresh at 90hz, so no flickering like at 60

I would invest in some custom lenses, for the G1 (I did ) VR Optician - Prescription Glasses for Virtual Reality Headsets, my glasses are more expensive than the headset so ... spending the extra makes a lot of sense, you dont mention if your processor is a K series or no but i would recommend over clocking if it is, the 1080 GTX FTW2 is a good GPU, but you will make some compromises in settings, i had to on the 1080TI FTW3 (see my setting below in my sig block)

2) Any drawbacks if I have to wear glasses?

As speed-of-heat says, get some drop-ins. They don't cost that much and no hassle with your glasses. I have a VR Optician pair for my Rift-S and i consider it money well spend.

If you have someone over who like to try VR, you just flip'em out for the session and back in when you're done.

Personal Wish List: A6 Intruder, Vietnam theater, decent ATC module, better VR performance!

I'm playing on a 1080 at present, and I have a lot of work to do still with adjusting settings in order get to anything playable on the G2. Whereas with my old Oculus Rift CV1 (which had a LOT fewer pixels to push) I could get playable frame rates in DCS without much tweaking, with the high resolution of the G2 my FPS is frequently dropping into 20s or even teens, even on free flight missions. When I can manage to stay in the 30s, it's a jumpy, inconsistent 30.

Like I said, more tweaking and optimizing of my setup is needed, but I would be careful about investing in a G2 unless you are willing to invest in a new graphics card at some point too. You may have a lot of work to do with DCS to get just a marginal visual experience. One plus: there are other sims (well, one) in which I'm getting a very playable 45 FPS with great visual quality. And that experience is a mind-blowing blast that is holding me over until the latest generation of video cards finally come widely into stock.

As to whether to make the VR leap at all, my first experiences with it in the CV1 were... underwhelming. The poor visuals for me offset the gain in immersion. It didn't seem to me to be worth the work. That's why I suggest you not try to make the G2 work in DCS on a 1080... it may put you off of VR unnecessarily. The G2 (at least in the other sim) is finally giving me that "Oh WOW" factor that makes people never want to play on a monitor again, and I think DCS will be twice as cool, once I retire the 1080.

Hope that helps!

Yep.

I would consider a GPU upgrade also though when you can.

I don't wear glasses but seems the G2 has some good space in it for that.

Woot! got my G2 today! Hoping to pickup my RTX3090FE on Friday, (via BB).

Should I hang tight until I have the 3090? Or just launch in tonight with my EVGA GTX1080SC for the shake down? :)

I can't speak to question #2. But I think you can get prescription inserts if necessary. But that's true of any VR HMD, not just the G1/G2.

As to the other two questions - yes after doing lots of research - I do think the G2 is the best choice out there for DCS. It has the highest resolution on the market and resolution is king in DCS VR.

I also have a i9-9900K but I have a 2080 ti, so your graphics card will likely be your limfac. I am able to run mine with high settings and still get good frametimes and very smooth play. I have heard of other with 1080s also run the reverb just fine but maybe with some settings turned down a bit.

If you're considering switching from flat screen to VR, do it. Don't hesitate. You won't regret it at all. The immersion is worth the little bit of resolution you might give up over a 4k monitor. Once you go VR, you can never go back to flatlandia again.

Got my G2 today came from the original oculus rift, wow what a difference - it's as clear as looking at it on my monitors. I wish I could use reshade though, having some issue getting it to run right though will post in a separate thread. I've only seen oculus cv1 and reverb g2, no comparison the g2 blows it away beyond any expectation I had for clarity.

Got mine in yesterday (8/16 preorder from Connection). First impressions, coming from an original Odyssey:

- Coming from another WMR headset, it was plug-and-play, aside from adjusting graphics settings for performance.

- Ergonomics are way better. Much lighter weight, smaller overall, and fits my face better. With the Odyssey, I'd get some ambient light leaking in around the sides, especially with the stock face pad. With the G2, I get a perfect, repeatable fit and no ambient light pollution. Adjustment of the Odyssey to fit different users is quicker and easier, but that's not a big consideration for my use case.

- Headset tracking seems more stable; makes sense given it has four cameras vs. the Odyssey's two.

- The IPD slider "feels" more precise than the adjustment wheel on the Odyssey. Range of adjustment is smaller than the Odyssey.

- The off-ear speakers are... different. Sound quality is fine, but you will definitely need to crank up the volume if you're coming from headphones. For immersion in flight sims, with clicky HOTAS switches, rudder pedals, and other noisy peripherals (JetSeat, in my case), I don't think they're the best solution.

- Field of view is noticeably narrower than the Odyssey.

- The cable management loop is larger than the Odyssey, and removable. This will make moving and cable-managing my PointCTRL much easier than it was on the Odyssey.

- Clarity is incredible. The Odyssey is no slouch here, but the G2 is on a whole other level. Individual pixels are essentially indiscernible, and SDE is simply not a thing. Before adjusting my DCS settings for performance, framerate was terrible but visual quality was amazing. Even after adjusting settings to get acceptable framerates (45 FPS with reprojection), it's still a huge improvement over the Odyssey. If text in a cockpit is blurry in the G2, it's because the texture is dated (older modules like the F-86), IPD is off, etc.; it's NOT the fault of the headset. My 1080ti is clearly the limiting factor here, and I can't wait to see what one of the new RTX or 6000-series cards can do.
