HP Reverb G2 Announced - next Gen

Well, pleased for you Don. I wish I could say the same for any UK activity. Although I would add that Systemactive took my money in the first week of July! Not very impressive.

Ugh, that is not cool.

I'm glad that I will just wait. There is no telling when I'll get a new GPU. Looking to get the 3080ti when it's out in January but who the hell knows.

The g2 should work fine though on this 1080ti until that time comes. Hopefully everyone that ordered one doesn't have to wait too long.

Just checked on the Connection website, has a tracking number showing preparing for shipment via UPS 2nd day air.

Maybe I will get it either Sat or Mon.

No e-mail notification here either, but I just checked my order and it shipped yesterday. Not very good communication on their part, but at least its on its way. Heh, I'll probably get a "GOOD NEWS! WE'RE SHIPPING YOUR G2!" e-mail a week after it gets here.

Your 1080 (non ti) will be fine for your first flights. A faster GPU later will always be nice but not needed right of the bat. I would not go for the 3080 (at least as long as the price is not dropped back to mrsp, which will be soon with the newer and faster cards available. A 6800XT, 6900XT or 3080Ti will provide much better performance per buck.

Thanks for the feedback! Gives me hope that I might at least manage some reasonably smooth free flights while I wait on a new card. And I totally agree about the 6900XT or 3080Ti... the 3080's seemingly small advantage over the 6800XT is offset for me by the big difference in VRAM, and the 6900XT at $1000 destroys the already dubious value proposition of the $1500 3090. If the 3080Ti outperforms the 6900XT, I think it will take the price/performance crown. But it's irrelevant if once again no one can buy one through regular retail channels.

(FYI for US pre-orderers: My July 13 order from Connection still shows as back-ordered. I'm curious to see how much time passes from dburne's July 8 order shipping to my July 13 shipping, to see at what rate they are working through the backlog.)

There isn't going to be a 3080ti ever.

There might be a 3080S in a little over a years time, but certainly not sooner.

The rumors of 3080's with more VRAM where old, and will not come to pass.

In fact there is already a 3080 with more RAM and it's called the 3090, it is literally the only difference between the cards.

They certainly wouldn't be launching a replacement or obfuscation on the 3080 before they have lasting stocks in stores.

I'm holding some patience here, betting that once stocks come in more reliably, and AMD is finally putting up a little competition, although I'm still too concerned about drivers to get one.

That's not what it says here. AMD's 6800xt and 6900xt independent reviews are coming soon. They are already suspected to perform better or very close to the 3080 and 3090.

Stock will be an issue regardless of what is coming out. But they will respond with something whether it's this or a small price cut.

Absolutely true of the rumored 16GB 3080 variant from a couple months ago, but the latest 20GB 3080Ti rumor is new and fresh. Of course, that doesn't mean it is any more true, and it doesn't mean the card will come into stock in the span of a human lifetime even if NVIDIA does produce it. But it does make sense that they need to respond in some way to the 6900XT, for which AMD claims 3090-like performance for 2/3 the price.

My settings for my G1 (same resolution, so same perf impact) are in my sig block, if you start there, you will likely be able to run significantly settings, but start with mine and increase as you see fit

Well, I've only used mine for about 15 minutes. The sweet spot is a little bigger, the lenses are a LOT better, the adjustable IPD is nice but to me the biggest improvement has to be the color accuracy and the contrast.

It's definitely a generational improvement, the difference between the G1 isn't like going from an Odyssey+ to the G1 was, but it's a worthwhile upgrade and fixes most of the issues I had with the G1.

How's the comfort? For long sorties I always feel like the G1 got a bit uncomfortable because I had to have it tight on my face so it wouldn't move because the sweet spot had to be aligned properly.

It's better, the new strap design and face cushion is quite a bit more comfortable.

Just a heads up/warning for anyone with the G2, check your steam VR scaling. On mine, at 100% steam VR wants to run at over ~3000x3000, and I had 129% applied for DCS so it was running at an absolutely stupid resolution and performance was terrible. Double check yours.

Good to hear, hoping I see a nice improvement over my Rift S.

Mine arrives tomorrow.

Just been told by Systemactive that first orders will be in the UK in November 26 and that all July preorders will be received November 30.

Not particularly happy about that, but what can we do?

Well yes, but covid. Connection was the single US VAR available from HP so 10,000 units out of 330m people seems like a lot but the hype has been building for this since the end of May. ~1800 orders a month, or 60 a day. Good amount for sure but nothing crazy.
