I had a Vive Pro, and although it’s a solid piece of kit, the res and the horrible SDE are way outdated now.

Vive Pro has 1440x1600 which is same as Index. And Rift S has 1280x1440. It's not top of the line but I'd hardly categorize it as outdated.

And SDE of OLED and faded black of LCD has been trade off between two technology and up to personal preference. Not better or worse.

What Taz said. I currently own both Idex and Vive Pro and testing side by side. Basically everyone says "you get used to the poor blacks on the Index everything else is worth it" and I would turn that around and say "you stop seeing the very slight SDE on the Vive Pro and the blacks and colour definition are worth it".

Pure personal preference. As for the Res, the difference in clarity between the two is minimal.

Obviously if we're talking about super-resolution things like Pimax and Reverb then that's a different matter, but those are more specialised, more expensive and require an even beefier PC to run. It's all compromises no matter how you look at it.

And even then, I've looked at "through the lens" type video comparisons and I'm not seeing a quantum leap in visual clarity for those super-resoltuon headsets that I would expect comparing numbers alone.

You forget the lenses, the lenses on the vive, and thus the vive pro are atrocious, even when compared to the CV1 at the time, and just comically bad compared to newer HMD's.

And I'm sure it has been mentioned, the pentile nature of the screens means that resolution is practically half of what is advertised.

In my experience the lenses on the Index are far worse in terms of glare/god rays. And they also seem to blur the image slightly as a trick to hide the SDE.

Don't know about the technical implications of pentile but as I said, for me the Index at the same nominal resolution as the Vive Pro looks only slightly clearer, and not in a way that makes any difference (there are no cockpit labels or instruments that I can read in the Index but can't in the Vive Pro).

I have come into a little money (not in a good way) but cant decide if I should be saving for a relatively low res VR or upgrading to a 32"2K monitor. Is the immersion of VR really worth the resolution sacrifice? Problem is I have no way of seeing VR for myself. Keeping in mind even with saving Im only gonna be looking at a mid range option like RiftS.

You're asking this question on a VR forum , so expect a bias in the answers . For my part , i've never flown with a monitor since getting the CV1 , let alone the much better visuals of the Rift S . (30 years of flightsimming here) .

You'll just gonna have to try it. Buy it from someone or somewhere you can return it from.

And whether you're gonna love it or hate it will also depend on the device you choose. If you choose a device that's bad, you'll obviously hate VR. And it's not just about the resolution or the lens. The fit, comfort, tracking, and IPD are all very important. And what makes the choice difficult is that they're mostly personal.

Is the immersion of VR really worth the resolution sacrifice?

Depends solely on the individual. For me certainly it was/is a big YES, but i still fly 2D too (50/50). VR for me was just a big WOW moment!

(In the beginning after the WOW moment i thought... ah that crappy shimmering but i don't notice it as much as first, bothers me less and less)

I've just upgraded from a 24" 1920x1200 to a 27" 2560x1080 (32" slipped my mind but from the distance i'm sitting, i guess 32" is a tad to big since the edges fall out just of FOV).

This 27" screen is better then my previous 24" but not 100%. The 27" is 16x9 while the 24" was 16x10. In standard FOV in DCS, without zoom, the 16x10 is just a better resolution.

PS: using the 24" 90° tilted as a reader now when i need to learn stuff...:smartass:

Win11 Pro 64-bit, Ryzen 5800X3D, Corsair H115i, Gigabyte X570S UD, EVGA 3080Ti XC3 Ultra 12GB, 64 GB DDR4 G.Skill 3600. Monitors: LG 27GL850-B27 2560x1440 + Samsung SyncMaster 2443 1920x1200, HOTAS: Warthog with Virpil WarBRD base, MFG Crosswind combat pedals, TrackIR4, Rift-S.

Personal Wish List: A6 Intruder, Vietnam theater, decent ATC module, better VR performance!

Unfortunately you won't know until you try it.

It seems the majority of folks are very glad and keep it, and a few just do not like it as good.

The good news is most VR headsets are in short supply right now, so probably not much trouble to sell it if dissatisfied.

For me I got my first Rift in Jan 2017, have Rift S now, and have not played any game on monitor since Jan 2017.

The truthful answer is "it depends".

It's all a matter of perspective.

You already know what playing on a monitor looks and feels like. It's like you are watching a movie on tv, with a lot of views taken from the cockpit side.

In VR, you are 'physically' in a full size cockpit, with the same views and perspectives of a real pilot. With a good Hotas and Voiceattack, you *are* a pilot.

My comments as stated above are at the heart of the matter, but they are not all there is to consider.

Two things. One, it isn't cheap, because your pc may need to be upgraded depending on its current state/age etc.

And the other is visually, monitors still have it over VR glasses. Only because the monitor is so small. Use a 6' tall monitor, and things wil start to be more even. IN other words, since everything in VR is life-size, that means a HUGE image which means less clarity - this is mostly an issue at far distances.

That drives us VR nuts to get the better VR headsets if we can afford them.

I had the Rift S for a year (not a bad place to start) and now have the Index. Flat screen flying doesn't do it for me anymore.

I still think the OLED screens of the Odyssey+ are much better than the LED/LCD screens of the other offerings. I do love to fly at night though. Richer colors and deeper blacks with virtually no screen door effect at all. The adjustable IPD goes pretty wide too if you need that feature. And a 1080ti will hold a steady 45 FPS with lots of eye candy enabled. They can be had used for $250 which would give you an idea if VR is for you. If you don't like them you can get your money back out of them on eBay,

Mower,

I can only say this. If your CPU/GPU are within specs for a Rift S, indeed it'll be a flight sim changing event. There's no way a Rift S can match the resolution of a pancake/monitor display. But the immersion is more than worth it.

I remember reading a post from dburne, about how during his first flight, he nearly wept because of the immersion factor. I can honestly say I felt the same way. I started out with the Rift CV1, and my first flight was with the 109. Just looking in the cockpit, like a real aircraft was incredible!!!

There is no way, absolutely NO WAY I'll ever go back to pancake mode. Regardless of resolution. The key thing is whether your HW can handle the minimal specs. If it does, take the VR pill by all means!!!

best wishes bro!

So ignoring FPS performance for the moment, what grafic settings, either in sim or nVidia control panel, will yield the sharpest VR grafics, especially within the cockpit.

Higher the PD or SS the sharper it'll be.

Personally, I don't use MSAA... or any AA. MSAA will remove jaggies but introduces shimmers which bothers me just as much. So instead, I use that processing power (which is quite a lot) to increase the PD further to reduce the size of jaggies. Supersampling afterall is a method of anti-aliasing. And at the same time, makes everything sharper.

But again, some just can't stand the jaggies so it's all personal.

Not much affects it in Nvidia Control Panel.

I did find one that I "think" helps mine a little, I enable MFAA ( could be placebo). I set Power Management to Prefer Maximum Performance. All other settings I do in game.

I run 2x MSAA. AF to 16x. ( seems to help sharpen it up some without a big hit on performance).

I run 1.2 PD in game for my Rift S.

My experience with the Rift and Rift S has been just the opposite. using PD made the gauges look nicer, but I could still see lots of shimmering terrain. MSAAx2 looked almost as good as PD, but reduced shimmering significantly. MSAAx4 looked the best, but came at too high of a performance cost.

40 fps (ASW) acceptable.

80 FPS ideal.

Running ASW rate of 40 fps can be a very subjective thing and finding it acceptable can be very dependent on the individual and how they see it.

40/80 for Rift S, Rift CV1 would be 45/90.

Is ASW enabled by default?

For Rift, yes.

You can check out different ASW methods with either the Oculus Tray Tool or with the keyboard shortcuts as follows.

Control-Numpad1: Disables ASW and returns to the standard rendering mode.

Control-Numpad2: Forces apps to 45Hz with ASW disabled. Depending on the application, you are likely to experience judder.

Control-Numpad3: Forces apps to 45Hz with ASW enabled. Enabling and disabling ASW will help you see the effects of ASW.

Control-Numpad4: Enables ASW. ASW will automatically turn on and off, depending on whether the app maintains a 90Hz frame rate. This will be the default rendering mode when ASW is officially enabled in the runtime.

Note for Rift S those numbers would be 80/40 respectively.
