DCS Torrent update not working properly

Recommended Posts

It always seems that using the Torrent method of downloading is incredibly slow and i had some suspicions as to why.

This evening i looked into to and can't say I'm surprised.

For a connection to work there either needs to be an open port at one end, or something to mediate the connection.

It seems the DCS_updater has no such features.

At best it might support uPNP, but for security reasons this is almost extinct.

So if no ports are open how do ED propose to make torrents work?

Using cPorts i captured the screen below, and can see attempts made continuously by others clients, but not a single successful connection, not a single byte of data flow.

Obviously i could open a port, but what really needs to happen is to have a vast audience do the same before torrents will work.

Ultimately time and time again canceling and using HTTP is about 10 - 12x faster for me (though with extra data in effect only 6-8x faster).

I'm at a loss as to why it is this way?

Torrents are great.... when implemented and configured correctly, otherwise they're not.

i too experience extremely slow torrent speed. I have a 400Mb connection so can download at 47MB/s

Yes, attempting to torrent updates has always been much slower for me too. I always have to choose HTTP.

You cannot switch from torrenting the Deltas. If you cancel, you don't go to the http connection. You just cancel the update.

Wait until the Deltas are finished, THEN you can switch from torrenting to http. Unfortunately, I found that out the hard way. Four hours into the 2 GB Delta download yesterday, I gave up and tried to cancel into the http connection. (I only know 7 cuss words so I yelled them until I cried.)

The Hornet is best at killing things on the ground. Now, if we could just get a GAU-8 in the nose next to the AN/APG-65, a titanium tub around the pilot, and a couple of J-58 engines in the tail...

Same very slow torrenting:

  1. Downloaded at 50KB-500KB/sec with a 50mbit FTTP link (5.0MB/sec capable).
  2. Took 21 hours to get the 17gb patch, but upload approx 3-4 times faster to other torrenters.
  3. Net result used 40GB download / uploaded. (Not good on a limited 100GB / month plan that counts uploads and downloads), I only had 43GB remaining before patching DCS Openbeta and 3GB after.
  4. Worst update speed ever, torrent give priority to uploading and not downloading:mad:.

As per the picture above i had zero data flow via torrent except to/from ED servers.

The updater was trying to connect to other users, but connections were never established.

Despite this the client was reporting being connected to peers.

I suggest others try cPorts to get a clear understanding of the issue.

https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/cports.html

What you're looking for is an established connection and more than a handful of bytes from a server other than an ED/DCS server.

You will notice that there is not a single byte sent or received from connections other than the ED/DCS ones.

Thus it would appear that my client is getting a list of peers, but is unable to establish a connection.

If there are successful connections it would appear that someone might not be behind a NAT router, and/or the client uses uPNP, and/or the user has forwarded a port.

If anyone finds uPNP in their router settings it would be wise to turn it off.

That said though be prepared to open/forward ports manually if you're running servers etc..

Some time ago when the updater didn't work at all for me, I did notice the autoupdatelog.txt had errors of no connections to torrent clients in it with invalid IP numbers or the like, so I was very suspicious then.

Thanks for the detailed report, might give that program ago sometime.

Cheers, Ian.
