Sound Overhaul Mod w/Dynamics (New Sounds and SDEF's!) 2020

Recommended Posts

UPDATE 23/10/2020: Version 3.0 is currently being worked on, this will move the mod to the saved games folder, meaning it will remain during updates and will be easier to remove. Furthermore, it will be set up in a way so that it can be enabled/disabled in the module manager. It will also bring further changes to the internal sounds, hopefully using real sound recordings from a museum Mig-21bis.

UPDATE 13/01/2021: Version 3.0 will include a complete overhaul of internal sounds, as well as taking suggestions on board. It will also include alternate mixes if the demand is there for them, I am just waiting for the weather to warm up before cockpit recordings can be made. Further details will be released then. I am also working on another much needed sound mod for another aircraft, so keep an eye out...

As a recent purchaser of this module, one of the first things that struck me was how this module sounded compared to other, newer aircraft- especially the F14. I set out to change this, and have spent the past couple of months working on a complete sound overhaul for the module, including mixing, creating, and editing new sounds from various real life sources, as well as re-writing nearly all the SDEF's (Basically config files for the how the sound behaves) for both internal, and external sounds. Mods have been produced before, however most are pre DCS 2.5 and are now 4 or 5 years old- they also only really altered dynamics, internal sounds, or external sounds- this mod does all of that, and more!

Some of the key issues I wanted to address with this mod were:

  • Unrealistic, and disappointing afterburner sound- it just sounded like pitched down white noise, with no "crackle"
  • Unrealistic idle sound compared to real life- although it is not too bad, in reality it is a high pitched turbine whine, here it doesn't sound like that.
  • All sounds in external view are the same volume, even if you're looking straight up the exhaust- the afterburner can be heard at the same volume, even at the intake!
  • The aircraft sounds like a vacuum cleaner in flypasts.

Version 2.0 Now released! Thank you for all of your great feedback- I have taken this into account for Version 2.0 and I hope I have adressed some of the issues. I have also added some new sounds relating to the canopy, which I would love to hear feedback on too. Some of the requests made last time:

- Louder Afterburner (External & Internal)

- High pitched should be heard from front and sides more rather than back.

- Landing gear thumps too loud, add nosewheel touchdown sound.

- Louder Crackling sound on AB, high pitched roar (flyby)

- Slightly faster engage

The ones in green have been added in this mod. Unfortunately, the config files for the landing gear sounds seem to have no effect, this is being looked into. I also cannot add new sounds, however am now in contact with M3 LLC so keep your eye out for any new updates.

I also added new cockpit canopy sounds, as the originals are incredibly low quality and lacking in definition (the canopy seal sound was also just the unseal sound in reverse). I am not 100% complete with them yet but am awaiting your feedback.

After two months work, this mod fixes all of those issues, however it is still open to fine tuning and there are a few sound issues from looping that need sorting out- the main focus for the first release was dynamics, and afterburner- both of these I feel are significant improvements over original. Volumes have also been changed to match other aircraft.

Keep in mind, this is only release 2.0, I'd love to hear you feedback to help improve this mod. In the future, I also plan on reworking some of the other internal sounds, however, it must be understood there are limitations to what can be done without access to the source code.

COMPARISON VIDEO (please note, the mod sounds much better when installed and without the audio glitches caused by my recording software bugging out)

Just downloaded this mod and I gotta say it's SO MUCH BETTER than the original.   The original cockpit afterburner sound was just so drastically, crazy loud it overpowers every other sound o

Thanks for the feedback, glad you like it. New update coming soon.   I'll look into the cannon sounds, but I think this might be a matter of replace one, replace all - but I'll look into

I am not a sound specialist, nor Mig-21 one but I love your sound mod. I just watched the video but I will try it when I come back from holidays.   The Mig-21 is even more badass with this mod!   Go

First of all: thanks!

I'm trying to install this via the the SavedGames folders, but I cannot get it to work (i.e. nothing changes). Any idea why this might be?

I use other sound mods (for other modules) just fine...

Cheers

Stefan

P.S.: I was just looking for a sound mod last night, and then this popped up today... =D

It is super. I'm getting cold on the back at start. Turbine squeaking and engine reactivity give the model strength and realism.:thumbup::thumbup::pilotfly:

Haha, thank you for your kind words :) Glad you like it, will be working on an update soon.

What a coincidence, glad I realised it at the time I did :). That's interesting, are you on the steam or standalone version? If the standalone version, the key is making sure you're in the root DCS directory with the "mods" and "coremods" folders- if you don't see these then it won't be replacing the sound files.

Thank you very much for the mod. I have set the sound to 100 percent volume. The internal sound is absolutely top quality. When I switch the external view. I think the volume of external sound needs to be increased. Perhaps a full afterburner would like to turn up the volume. Can you please.:pilotfly::thumbup:

I'll look into it, but I think full afterburner is already at maximum gain- keep in mind it can only be heard at full volume from the rear. :)

Just tested and very happy so far : )

Only your "high pitched turbine whine" or hissing sound on the ground should be hearable more in front and at the sides i think. At the moment it is more present in the back of the airplane.

Good example here :

Keep it up !

Kind regards , Markuscha

Thank you for the feedback, I will have a play around, but one of the issues I found last time I increased this was the "hoover" type sound during flybys, but I'll see what I can do :)

Hey Nin,

This is great work, I find it absolutely amazing!

I am more interested in the cockpit sounds as I only fly in VR. You did mention that without the source code your control over the sound is limited, however, this is really close to the real thing as far as one can compare it to youtube in-cockpit videos. I really like how you can hear the compressor whining in the cockpit.

I can't remember if the sound after touch down was there originally, or you put it there. It sounds amazing, you can hear the wheels rolling. The only thing missing is the louder noise after the nose wheel touches down. I am not sure about the gear up and down thumps. In the footage I can only hear the nose wheel thump on retraction and extension. However, these videos are recorded with a gopro with its one microphone probably. I asked a guy who flew the type, he says you can hear the gears lock on retraction, but not that much on extension. On some videos you can clearly hear the nose wheel thump when the guy selects gear down. On most videos I can not hear it at all. Maybe the 21 fans can look around more and post videos with good sounds, but I am sure you watched them all. My opinion at the moment is that the thumps are too loud, and it would be awesome to add the nose wheel touchdown sound as well, if possible. I can't watch these videos any longer, my hearing is going.

Keep it up, it is really nice to see some improvement on this module.

Thanks for your feedback :) I did have a play around with the nose gear retraction sounds after I noticed a few glitches, however, I didn't edit any of the files for this version- one of the things I noticed was that the thump sound could be heard in external view which I tried to correct, in this version however no changes were made to the landing gear sound effect. I will certainly look into refining the landing gear sounds, and, if the landing gear touchdown sound is local to the MiG21 sound files then I will look into adding a louder nosewheel touchdown sound. Thanks :)
