Soviet WW2 aviation isn't terribly popular in the English speaking world and DCS has neither the map nor the assets to make Eastern front scenarios viable. I'd buy it because I'm interested in the aircraft itself, but realistically it makes little sense to make it.

Great classic plane. There is one problem with Yak-9 - to have any sense it would require at minimum WWII Soviet asset pack and WWII Eastern Front map. Plus preferably some Soviet AI planes like IL-2 and Tu-2. It would be huge amout of work.

If it would be JUST one Yak-9 out of context, to fly fantasy scenarios only on western front map, together with US/British planes, covering US/British tanks, escorting US/British bombers - and making DCS even wider and shallower at the same time - in such case i wouldn't be interested.

Thats funny - I seem to remember another sim concerning the Il-2, which apparently did rather well.

Less sense than it was to make the P-51 and throw it into modern jet sim.... in a Caucasus map?

Hand on heart, do you believe Soviet WWII aviation is particularly popular with most of the English speaking crowd? I don't.

No, possibly a little bit more considering the German assets we have in the game. But not because the Yak is such an obviously great and safe choice, but rather because doing the Mustang at the time was, how to put it, very brave.

Although I'd rather see some other modules of this era first I would get it as well.

I just wish we would get a few modules for one consistent time frame / area of operation.

According to War Thunder - yes, pretty much

Well, let's agree to disagree then. I'm pretty sure the Pacific theatre, Battle of Britain, Western front, Southern front... All capture the imagination of the average Westerner much more.

For Joe Public you'd be right. I'd say it's a different kettle of fish for simmers/flying enthusiasts though.

Definitely would like to see a WWII Yak mono of some description in DCS.

^THIS^

The Yak 9 is one of the most popular planes in the lower/mid ranks of WT. It comes equipped with either 20mm, 37mm or 45mm cannons.

I would guess that you haven't played WT. The whole Russian lineup is very popular with pilots and tankers all over the world.

Granted, WT can hardly be called a sim, It's mostly arcade.

They do have a sim mode, but it doesn't compare to DCS. Cockpit modeling and FM's leave a lot to be desired. That's why I'm over here now.

How much of that is the meta of the game and how much is genuine historical interest?

Do you think an Eastern Front aircraft would be more popular with English speakers than an aircraft from any of the theatres I mentioned above?

For me at least it was both. I have Ukrainian roots so I have an interest in the history of Soviet aircraft and

I learned a lot just from playing WT.

I'm not advocating for adding the Yak at this time. I would rather see the Pacific theatre develop

with the new Marianna's map. Allied and Japanese assets air, naval and ground.

To properly use the Yak we would need an Eastern Europe or western Russia map with battles

centered around Stalingrad or something. I'd rather be flying Hellcats and Corsairs against Zeke's and Oscars.

Edit:  and landing on the Yorktown or Enterprise

I'm a bit of a Russophile-  I studied Russian and converted to Orthodox Christianity. Anyhow even if that weren't the case with me I also like the early cold war period and the YAK-9 and Red military assets from the period would be nice for the MiG-15 and F-86

TBH, I don't believe that DCS devs would like to stretch their limited resources even further to go and play on the field of another well-established Russian WW2 air combat simulator, called after a certain attacker plane. They would have big problems competing with this another simulator in a Great Patriotic War niche. And they already are heavily invested into NW Europe and the Pacific.

P.s. But if they do make it, it would be magnificent.
