VF-84 Jolly Rogers Low Viz Tactical Scheme.

Recommended Posts

As requested by a few people. It comes with 14 x Modex / numbered skins 200 to 214, so it can be used for squadrons and others to have in lieu of a modex system . I have kept the Low Viz skin simple and in line with the low viz Tactical scheme , I have used the authoritive "Colors and Markings of US Navy F-14 Tomcats, Part 1 and 2 by Bert Kinzey and Rock Roszak" as my reference for this skin and all my F-14 skins. The below pictures of the real aircraft were copied from the Digital Book "Colors and Markings of US Navy F-14 Tomcats, Part 1 and 2 by Bert Kinzey and Rock Roszak" . The Pictures are by Grove and the US Navy. I thank them all for the great and invaluable information and beautiful pictures of an iconic and majestic aircraft. The skin comes with pilot insignia and badges and helmets art.

I have deliberately left out the Carrier Tail codes as this would cause some confusion. As the Squadron didnt fly off the Stennis ( I think)

Directions to install the Modex Numbers:

There are 4 zip files at Userfiles for download. The zip files contains No's 01 to 04, 05 to 08, 09 to 12 and 13 to 14. for the skin VF-84 Jolly Rogers Low Viz Tactical Scheme ver 17.09.2019.

Directions:

1- Download and Unzip the zip file with the numbers/modex you require, you will see numbered folders for each modex, eg "01", "02", "03", etc etc,

which corresponds to the aircraft number/modex you want to use.

Each Numbered folder contains 5 textures that you must use to number your aircraft correctly.

Each modex requires a fresh download skin of the "VF-84 Jolly Rogers Low Viz Tactical Scheme ver 17.09.2019".

2- Open up the folder of a fresh copy of VF-84 Jolly Rogers Low Viz Tactical Scheme ver 17.09.2019 and drop in the 5 Modex textures.

They simply will replace the existing ones.

3- Number the Skin folder as per the modex number your using.

4- Using Notepad++ : a free (GNU) source code editor open the lua and scroll to the : "name = "VF-84 Jolly Rogers Low Viz v17.09.2019" and

place the modex number, in this case "01", at the end of the name like so: "name = "VF-84 Jolly Rogers Low Viz v17.09.2019 No 01".

5- Save the file and close it and it is ready for use.

-I will fix the colour shades soon, the top of the plane and the wings should be the same shade.

- I have pulled down the skin from Userfiles to repair it properly, also had some problems with the Google link for the Modex textures. I will have it back on soon.

Very good work! One small factual issue: Navy carrier-based tacjets haven't had a modex ending in 08 or 09 since the 1960s. These two numbers started getting skipped, and I've never seen an F-14 or any other aircraft attached to a CVW with an 8 or 9 in the modex.

Yes thanks Swordsman, I am aware of that, I have those numbered because people have requested that because of their Virtual squadrons requiring the extra Aircraft. Thanks.

I have updated the skin and Modex textures to Version 21.9.2019, I didnt like the position of some stencils and repositioned and changed them also edited some colours slightly. This has improved the skin as well.

As usual you can download them from userfiles.

Thanks for those nice skins, I always found that lo vis livery was one of the best around. Does anyone know if that toned down livery was used alongside the classic black/yellow Jolly Rogers scheme? I mean, was the CAG / the C/O bird left hi vis?

Hi Tomcatter, thanks for the kind words, and as to your question, from what I believe ( although I might be wrong) the answer is : It depends. Why ? well from what I can find in some reference books some CAG Birds did remain "Hi Vis" : colourful " and also some didnt, I beleive it would all boil down to policy from the Dept of Navy, also to what the CAG wanted his Wing to do and what operational status they were on. So once again in answer to your question its not really set in concrete. Hahah hope I didnt confuse you.

I looked around the net and -as usual - found sth on anft.net. Interesting is that the hi vis bird has bort number 207 - so it's not the CAGs plane.

I love that picture. They probably swapped them around for reasons only they know lol ! But I can recommend a great couple of books that get down to the nitty gritty which is : "Colors and Markings of US Navy F-14 Tomcats", Part 1 and 2 by Bert Kinzey and Rock Roszak. The information drawings, and pictures are top rate and I would say precise. Pretty cheap on Amazon as digital copies.

I was doing research on VF-84 schemes for one of my model kits because of this exact reason. Apparently they went through many paint transitions where, when changing from one scheme to another, some jets were totally repainted, some were partially repainted, and some were still hi-vis.

Greetings Strut,

I'm trying to install these skins, then update them with names and such, but I can't access the dds files like usual. Is there something I'm missing? Normally I pull the DDS into DXTBMP, send to photoshop, edit, reload in DXTBMP and save it... but the program can't read the DDS files. Can you help? I'd really like to use these now and then with my squadron.

Regards,

Actually, I could use your help. Am I correct that I have to copy the files from 200 into all the other modex folders (201-212) except those already in the folders? That puts the zip file with the 12 jets up around 1.6Gb...
