carrier landing

Hey to all

I try several times to follow the ICLS needles in order to land but every time I follow them on the final approach I See that I am far left or right of the carrier's course they do not lead me in the correct path. I suppose that something I do wrong.

Any idea?

Thank

Hold on. BRC or Base Recovery Course is basically ship's heading (mind you that in current implementation ATC gives that 2 degrees less than actual). Landing deck is at BRC -9 degrees.

So fro BRC 090 your final is 081.

I recommend reading a little bit here as well. https://wiki.hoggitworld.com/view/Carrier_Air_Operations

BRC + 11 degrees? I don't know why would that be.

Also: If you want us to see what you are doing wrong, a short track file or video would surely help to diagnose.

Is this your custom mission or the one in DCS?

TACAN would be two digits, most likely X, such as 55X.

ILS channel is a separate thing as well. All depends how the ship is configured in the mission.

A good example of ICLS approach is covered in this video as well

Try Case 1 first to get proficient maybe, or if you are good with Case 1 and want to go for Case 3, all seems to be fine in my beta, but as said already it all depends on the ship's configuration in the mission.

I mean the tacan course, sorry

No connection whatsoever. ICLS is one instrument in the boat, the tacan station is an entirely different instrument, and both emit different waves with distinct purposes. Please set your tacan according to the ship's tacan (which can be confirmed before loading the mission in the ME). The course should be the 180 reciprocal of the BRC (or the BRC itself, if you don't want to be picky). You use that on the HSI to line up with behind the ship (initial), and also to gauge your distance on the downwind leg (set HSI to 10nm scale). FOr you ti be somewhere in the 1.2-1.3 nm distance abeam at the 180, your wingtip on the HSI should be just touching the course at that scale.

ICLS should be set to the channel in which the ship is broadcasting (also configured and confirmed in the ME beforehand). It should also be set to on and boxed in the HSI. That's it. It's different from a civillian ILS in many ways, but the most important and practical to you is that you do not have to tune a VHF radio frequency and select a course. Just tune in the channel. That can be done via UFC or the manual knob on the left console.

One thing I'm a little confused with. If landing deck is -9 degrees from BRC, should I be setting the TACAN Course Line to match the BRC or the landing deck?

Edit:

Disregard, just realized the question has already been answered by Gierasimov. Set it to BRC. Thanks!

When I do a straight in approach from 10nM out I don't usually bother watching TACAN. I set it up to use in case I bolter. If I am planning on doing the correct pattern (which I am still not very good at) I do pay attention to the TACAN and the BRC. I do my turn to downwind and stop turning at 180 deg from the BRC (watching the normal heading indicator at the top of the HUD). I watch TACAN mostly to see how close I get to the 1.2 - 1.4 NM I am supposed to be when abeam the boat. I am generally too far so that tells me I will be doing a somewhat lazy turn to get to the final approach. Mid way through that last turn I start to watch the ICLS lines. The glide slope or altitude line shows up first. The localizer (left-right) shows up later. Apparently it is a somewhat narrow beam ( I am guessing only maybe 10-15 degrees left and the same to the right) so you need to be within that cone before the line shows up on the HUD. Once I have both ICLS lines on the HUD that is all I watch. I never use the Ball to guide me to the deck because I can't see it until maybe .2-.3 NM out. I use it as a flashing light that guides me to the boat from 10NM out and that is it. I don't know if a newer PC that would allow me to run graphics better then 1920x1080 would help w/ that or not but I am stuck w/ what I have for now.

Idea

In the mission editor, you can put three escorting ships, let's say 1 and 2 to the left and right of the Stennis, at 1.2 nmi range. Escort 3 would go behind at 3/5 nmi range. Make all part of the same group with Stennis, that way they sail together at assigned offsets.

In training CASE 1 these escorts can serve as visual references while flying pattern.

Gentemen

First of all I am good enough in CASE I recoveries. Let's say I have 9/10 successful landings in case I. The thing is that in case 3 when I follow the ICLS needles the aircraft is always whether left or right from the final BRC. To be punctual far left or right. That's the issue. I set the channel of the ICLS and the ICLS is active.

Do you have the HUD uncaged? I made a CASE III last night and I aborted my first approach because I forgot to uncage the HUD and it led me way off course. Once I corrected that, the second approach went fine.

Also, set the BRC to the angled deck, not the carrier's BRC and at 3nm out at 1,200ft, fly the needles.

ILS and ICLS do not need a course to be set. If your watching your HSI and you have the course set it looks right but you can have it 90 degrees off and the left/right needle will still show the correct path...it just won't look right.

Once you've set the ILS the only other option for land base is "reverse course" in case for some reason you have to fly an ILS backwards. It reverses the left/right signals coming from the ILS system so that it looks correct on your instruments. Of course this is not an option for an ICLS unless your one of the Grimm Reapers. Bunch of crazy's with their "unconventional carrier landing" parties.
