ED Team NineLine Posted September 2, 2019 ED Team Share Posted September 2, 2019 We want to look at an option to automatically remove shader folders, either by option or by default. In many cases, users have experienced issues, and deleting these folders has helped. If you can, when you come across these issues can you please share below. A description of the issues, and the results of removing the folders. Your dcs.log before and after (remember your previous log is generally saved as dcs.old) If we can get a good sample that this does actually help, and is not some sort of placebo, or simply restarting the sim, we can get this looked at. Please ONLY submit the requested information, all other discussion and such will be removed. Thanks! schurem
Oh dear, I'm afraid I haven't kept around logs but I'm quite certain letting the sim re-do the shaders after an update or driver update has unf$#ed the graphics on multiple occasions. Alas, it did not fix the Caucasus vineyard bug. I5 9600KF, 32GB, 3080ti, G2, PointCTRL

Distiler
I though shaders were compiled by GPU drivers, thus a driver update (or a hardware change) might require the game to recompile the shaders, just in case anything related has changed. It's a safe bet. AMD Ryzen 1400 // 16 GB DDR4 2933Mhz // Nvidia 1060 6GB // W10 64bit // Microsoft Sidewinder Precision

toutenglisse
Here I'm reporting more a placebo effect. I updated tonight my nvidia driver (436.15 to 436.30) - I saved first dcs.txt and dcs.log.old (thinking F18 Flir will bug / fxo-metashaders2 topic) The Flir was bugged after that. Then I tried several things with no success : 1) delete fxo/meta. 2) same plus dcs repair (I use some mods but : 3 sounds + starway with JSGME and Deck Crew in savegames - never had issue so just disable/enable JSGME). 3) rollaback to 436.15 + 1) and 2) Then, I tried reinstall latest driver only (436.30) without anything else … and it worked. Flir OK (in pictures) So I think the first 436.30 driver install had a bug, that repeated with 436.15 rollback, but was ok on last 436.30 install (what a mess) - fxo/meta delete process being placebo here for this specific bug. Joined : 3 folders : 1) dcs + dcs old from 7 sept. 2) dcs from 10 sept but bugged flir. 3) dcs + dcs old from 10 sept but bug solved. EDIT : some more tests with the Flir issue and fxo/metashadders2 delete process placebo in this case : https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=4046812&postcount=67fxo-meta.zip Edited September 25, 2019 by toutenglisse in post
wizav
It doesn't matter, just make fxo and metashaders2 folder deleted every time user exit the game... if you don't do it, I'll create a timed task on PC to do it Every time i delete those shaders I get few FPS extra [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Eldur
I've been doing this since I first read the recommendations, and I do this when updating by using a cmd file that contains the cleaning of those folders and then runs "DCS_updater.exe update". I had some few occasions where this fixed erroneous textures, but it's been a while since. So if there are considerations to automate this, it should happen after updating or repairing DCS for best results, oh and after changing graphics settings that require a DCS restart. oldcrusty
It doesn't matter, just make fxo and metashaders2 folder deleted every time user exit the game... if you don't do it, I'll create a timed task on PC to do it Every time i delete those shaders I get few FPS extra I thought deleting these files was recommended before each update. After deleting them I actually get smoother performance after a few flights over a specific area (especially in Caucasus). FPS is the same but not that many micro stutters. Am I imagining this? OzDeaDMeaT
Powershell script that clears your meta shaders and FXO files. Hi everyone, I made a powershell script that detects the game version and your video card driver version (only tested on Nvidia cards at this stage) and if a difference is found it will delete all the meta and FXO files for you. It also logs everything it does in a detailed log found in the DCS profile folder you specify. Download for the script and instructions on how to use it can be found here. CPU: i9-12900K @ 4.9Ghz M/B: MSI MEG z690 Ace RAM: 128GB Video Card: MSI RTX 4090 Suprim Liquid X VR: Varjo Aero

JR_Walker
Hey @OzDeaDMeaT Thanks for the script! However, in the version I downloaded from GitHub there was no call to the DCS_METACAHCE_CLEANUP function. I modified the script as below and then the script seemed to work fine. ... $DCS_CLEANUP_LOGFILE = $DCSPROFILE + "DCS_CLEANUP_METASHADERS.log" $CHECKFILE = $DCSPROFILE + "DCS_CLEANUP_METASHADERS_CHECK.log" DCS_METACAHCE_CLEANUP ###<<< add this line ############################################################################################# ### DO NOT EDIT BELOW THIS LINE UNLESS YOU KNOW HOW TO POWERSHELL! ... CobaltUK
This seems to have gone nowhere except for a user created script. Surely auto deleting as part of the update process could do no harm and possibly some good so why not just do it officially. Lange_666
This seems to have gone nowhere except for a user created script. Maybe because the effect is just a placebo? I still need to "see" any change by deleting them over not deleting them. Up until now, i didn't notice any difference at all (and i know because in about 50% i just forget to do it). Some say... it doesn't do anything but the shaders need to be recalculated. I then wonder... if it doesn't make any difference at all, why bother? I do delete them after every second update on average and I've never noticed any difference. Doesn't hurt either (apart from slightly longer loading times directly after deleting them). lobo
After changing IPD settings in DCS I had some (previously unseen) stuttering in VR... Tried changing a bunch of settings, no fix. Finally remembered about the FXO and meta shader folders... deleted them and BOOM! I'm back to buttery smooth VR. :) Should make myself a note to delete these once a week... has definitely made a difference for me several times.
